♦ President Vicky is looking for someone to host our "Holiday Party" on maybe Tuesday, December 12th. Will anyone volunteer their home?
♦ Holiday Baskets: Rich Plath
"We already are working with the San Juan Unified School District for our 2019 program. We enjoy the strong support of the Superintendent, Kent Kern and staff in charge of serving students who need support urgently. Our program is unique in that we serve many student families in our community who need the help the most.
It is important that we get an early count of those in our club who will help with home deliveries and bulk deliveries to the district office for further distribution. We will be doing our home deliveries Wednesday morning, December 18. We need help delivering food baskets to the district, also on Wednesday.
Another important part of our food program is helping assemble the food baskets on Monday, December 16 and Tuesday, December 17. We may be needed to help the district further distribute our baskets on Thursday, December 19.
My request is that each member communicate via e-mail or otherwise how he or she will help the week of December 16-19. An important aspect of our program has been our success recruiting family and friends. We would appreciate a tally of these other helpers as well. It is important to our club's reputation that we have good participation and that we fulfill the commitment we make to the school district. Please let me know by October 1."
♦ Dick Bauer sent around sign up sheet for those who want to physically help out for few hours with the project (painting walls etc.) Let him know if you want to volunteer to do some light work for a few hours on November 2nd and/or 3rd.

Michael Hardy was introduced by our Program’s Chair Hamid Ahmadi. In keeping with our month’s Rotary Theme, Economic and Community Development Month, he said that Michael is Certified Financial Planner and a Chartered Adviser in Philanthropy and will talk on the subject “A Rationale for Effective Philanthropy”.
Michael started out by telling us that there are 78 days until Christmas. 2% pf the GDP will be given to charity in cash and 30% of the annual income for non-profits come in December and 10% in the last few days. Much comes in the last few hours. Charities are asking for cash. This is the smallest part of people’s assets – only 3%, larger amounts are in homes, investments, IRAs and other. Charities are asking for annual giving from discretionary income – they will get more for their causes by appealing for other assets than just cash.
Every $1000 in non-profit deduction can benefit from 44% in taxes and you can save by using appreciation tax and what is tax deductible – it is called bunching. You can use bunch years and get way above the standard deduction.
Michael gave an example, such as putting investment property in a trust. Some people have had investment properties for many years and wish to fund their favorite charity and get rid of the responsibility of the property. The trust may be 90% funded with real estate. It may be depreciated down to 0. You may be able to gift the property to a charitable trust and get a higher income and a deduction of a large amount. (I must admit that I do not understand all the complex details of Michaels proposals, but it seems that you can, in certain circumstance, do much better with a charitable trust.)
Michael also talked about converting an IRA to a Roth IRA to avoid taxes and how to be smart when you are downsizing a home. There are other strategies available, Michael says, to help you be more efficient with your money and still give to charity. There was not enough time (20 minutes) to cover all the strategies. We all agree, a good idea is to save on taxes.
President Vicky efficiently let Michael know that a book has been dedicated (in honor of his presentation to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library)

Well "shore and begora", Chuck McBride was AGAIN available as “Happy Thought” therapist and not only that, it needs to be conveyed that Chuck was a BELLRINGER last week because he got a new expensive truck but your Bulletin Editor did not acknowledge Chuck and said a disparaging remark about his not being a Bellringer – me bad; Katha Danz stood up first and put in some significant money in celebration that she and Phil had their back yard landscaped last week – now it is a watered efficiently by “drip” system; Stan Roe somehow recommended a shot of scotch to take care of your problems and he GONGED THE BONG;Karen Munsterman gave $ for her anniversary ? Club?; George Abraham forgot the meeting last Tuesday; Vince Iosso put in some because he resigned as President-Elect, but glad thatDavid Thorman took his spot; Jay Boatwright put in because Oregon State won by 21 against UCLA; Walter Malhoski put in some for the 49ers and that he recently got a real I.D. card; Dick Bauer was happy because Chuck and Skylier Crowder were at the meeting; Chuck McBride was happy to find another Chuck in the audience and went through his litany about blood, the Foundation Dinner, and would like to use Raffle funds to finance a Paul Harris Fellow (he should be a politician!) Chuck Crowder, who is a politician was happy for the Club and to fight for his cause……One Bell Ringer and one Bong Gonger.

Bill Baxter got the winning ticket and even though he didn't get the prize,
he just got the 5 of Clubs. As Bill said - kind of pathetic.
It didn't matter because there was no money in the kitty anyway.
And he did get some wine as a consolation prize - so he was happy.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
