The meeting March 5, 2019 , was opened by our President Greg Hererra and he gave the microphone over to Vicky Boatwright who gave the "thought for the day":

► MARCH 19 - Carmichael Speech Contest - Chairs Phil Danz&George Abraham
► MARCH 26 - UGANDAN WATER PROJECT - Final detailed update!
Phil Danz, co-chair of the upcoming District 5180 Speech Contest at the Carmichael Club level, said he decided to go into some detail about the event, especially for those who are new in the Club. The speech contest is sponsored by Rotary District 5180 and is given annually.
Many or most Clubs in the District sign up to give Speech Contests and the participants are high school kids in their area, 9,10,11,and 12 graders are eligible.
Each participant or contestant must give a 5 to 8 minute speech on the topic of the year’s Rotary International Theme. This year it is “BeThe Inspiration”.
There are three contests (see schematic below). The Club level contests, the semi-final contests, and the Final District contest. 1st is at the Club Level and the winner wins $200, 2nd $100, and 3rd $50. The winners of the Club level contests go on to 4 semi-final contests and will represent their Club. The 4 regions are North Regional; Mid Regional; Sacramento Regional and the South Regional. The winner of the semi-final contests - 1st wins $250, 2nd $100, 3rd $50.; the winners of the 4 semi-final contests go on to the District finale which will happen during the District Conference. The District Conference will be held this year on Saturday, May 18 in Citrus Heights. The winner of the final contest will receive – 1st place $1000, 2nd $700, 3rd $400, and 4th $200. The final winner will have won $1450 total.
Our Club level contest which will happen on Tuesday, March 19th , will be administered by volunteers from our Club. We need 4 Judges, three permanent and one alternate; 1 timekeeper; 2 tellers; and 2 Sgt. at Arms. We have 5 committed participants this year –I am hoping for one more for a maximum of 6. Phil passed around a sign-up sheet and immediately got all spots filled. Phil said that he has been co-chairing this event with George Abraham for the last 3-4 years the , the kids are amazing and it is a lot of fun. He said that he has the Speech Contest handbook and would be glad give or email anyone a copy. Those who signed-up will get specific instructions next week.
Vicky Boatwright was the master mind of this year's crab feed. She decided to get the Club together soon after the event so that we would critique it while it is still fresh in our minds. Vicky led us through each phase of the event and elicited opinions from the various chairs and all who contributed to the event. By the way, it was a very successful event since the preliminary figures show the making of a couple thousand more dollars than last year which was probably our most successful one at that date. The Jesuits baseball team made $1400 for themselves and was excellently organized by their coach Joe Potulny. You may know he's been coach for the baseball team for 30 years,! The booklet that Bill Donnoe created was great (everyone agreed) and the sponsorship was double what was last year. Phil Danz and Jane Lampard reported that there were 24 desserts and they all sold. The average price they got was double the minimum bid, averaging a little over $50 per cake. Everyone agreed that BlaineDavis (the Sundance Kid) was excellent and he used his own microphone which was better than the standard one there. He ran the live auction, the music, and the dancing which was terrific. Other activities were discussed, the bar went great - efficient. Jeff Thompson thought the food went out smoothly. Jane did a great job on the decorating with the balloons - a woman's touch. The PowerPoint display that Dick Bauer put together was great and showed what great things the Club does during the year and because it was right in front, people did not miss it. Also the live auction items on screen synchronized nicely with the slide show.
THE NEW DATE AT LA SIERRA COMMUNITY CENTER FOR NEXT YEAR IS SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH, 2020.
Vickymentioned that a certificate for the soccer package was given out toTom Russell, the winner, but was not given the signed soccer ball. Does anyone know how to get in touch with him?
Now came the fun part, there was left over wine and spirits that the assemblage could buy at special prices. They were sold rapidly. The few bottles of wine left over will be given as extra prizes when we do out raffle. Selling these leftovers added to our profit for the Crab Feed.
Because the meeting went a little long, there was no "Happy Thought" program, but President elect-elect Doug Haaland filled the spot by BONGING THE GONG for 100 smackers!
For some reason, we did have a raffle, and Vince Iosso got the winning ticket and he should have won the $800 pot because he is such a nice guy, but sadly he only got the Jack of Spades. Vince took the disappointment with unanimity...

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
