Rise Against Hunger - a "hands on" project.

On a smoky day in the Sacramento Valley, due to the many wildfires, 13 stalwart members and family members traveled to “Rise against Hunger” (their west coast warehouse) and put together over 2000 meals over a 2-3 hour session. Once we were properly trained by Jim Quinney, head of their local chapter, we took our stations and formed a “mean machine”, mixing three ingredients into plastic bags, weighing them, sealing the individual packages, and very importantly, I (your bulletin editor) placed stickers with lot numbers on each of them and then the meals were packed into boxes.

Before our work began, Jim Quinney gave us a brief update on the “Rise Against Hunger” organization. Their mission is eliminate hunger in the world. There is 821 million people who do not have enough food to lead a healthy life – actually 1 in 9 who go hungry each night. Rise Against Hunger has not wavered in their commitment to the approximately 1.7 million people they serve. Jim said that Rise Against Hunger has four focus areas in their mission: Nourishing Lives, Empowering Communities Responding to Emergencies and Growing the Movement. He put special emphasis on “Nourishing Lives” as the first step. A special recent step is to include Rotary as a partner in their endeavors. (more pics below)
