►The definition of Rotary is a fellowship and service organization that helps ordinary people do extraordinary things!

Acting President Jay Sedlak welcomed P.D.G. Barry Kalar who is Chairman of Youth Services for the District and 1st spouse for our District Governor, Sandi Sava. Barry also came to Rotary with an impressive career in law enforcement and has served in two missions for Rotoplast.
Barry came today to speak to us about how to deal with the potential liability we have in dealing with our youth programs. There are three levels of contact that we have with our youth in Rotary, the most important being when we are placed in a one on one situation. It is important that we do proper screening for our members.
There are planned and unplanned situations where the one on one situation can occur - such as perhaps needing to drive a student to RYLA. The Rotary member should be screened.
Barry went on to talk about what is considered inappropriate behavior verbal or physical and gave examples. He also mentioned that some problems have occurred, but not in our District. Certification of members is a Club responsibility.
Be aware: listen, use confidentiality, get the facts and say something. The District can be contacted and will conduct an investigation. Record, protect and report.
With regard to pictures taken of minors, it is a good idea to get a waiver from the parents to use their photographs in your publications. This is especially true when taking a photo of one child - our publications nowadays goes out into the internet and some unsavory character could get the name and school of the child. Group pictures with no names are acceptable. Barry's email is chiefbk@wavecable.com and further information can be found on the District website, click on "Youth Services" and then "Youth Protection & Rotary Programs".
I don't know whether Acting President Jay mentioned that a book will be donated in his name to the Carmichael Library, but it's going to happen.

N ow it was decided, unfortunately, to not have "Happy Thoughts" today in the interest of time, so we will double next time.
However Chuck McBride wanted to give big kudos to Ed Bunting and Don Wangberg for allowing us to have that classy wonderful Foundation Night at Northridge last week.
Thank you Ed and Don!

RAFFLE
So it happened now that Chuck McBride
did have the winning ticket, and if he had gotten the Ace of Spades,
he would have been very happy, but he didn't draw the winning card.
He drew the King of Spades.
Did the phantom donor give him a nice bottle of white wine?
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

As of April 10, 2017, we have purchased nearly 150 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
