The meeting April 2, 2019 , was  opened by our Past President  Dick Bauer (filling for President Greg Herrera who was off to Hawaii or somewhere AGAIN! ). He gave the microphone over to the esteemed member and bulletin editor, Phil Danz, who gave a thoughtful "thought for the day":

JOKE FOR THE DAY

It was with a little trepidation that your bulletin editor and the morals committee listened to a joke suggested by the notorious Bill Baxter, but after a fair hearing and considering the way the joke was presented by the "talented" Alan Gallaway - permission was granted.

Bob forgot his 20th wedding anniversary. His wife was mad.  She told him “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from o to 200 in 6 seconds AND IT BETTER BE THERE!!!      The next morning when his wife woke up, she looked out the window to find a box….gift wrapped in the middle of the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale…Bob has been missing since Friday!

♦ "The REAL Leadership Assembly last Saturday was informative, motivational and got us talking about exciting ideas for next year!  Thank you Richard Olebe, Ed Bunting, Doug Haaland, Chuck McBride, Walt Malhoski, and Jay Boatwright for attending with me and sharing all your ideas.  I encourage all Carmichael Rotarians to participate in any of the free training sessions the District offers - you will come out of them enthused and motivated to "do good in our community and the world"! - President-elect Vicky Boatwright

Kids Hang Out - Matt Zimmerling

SUPERVISOR OF PARKS MATT ZIMMERLING AND PAST PRESIDENT DICK BAUER
We were introduced to a topic which really hit the sweet spot for our Club – a project in which we can help the Carmichael Parks and Recreation department to do good in our community. Ed Bunting introduced Matt Zimmerling, Supervisor for the Carmichael Parks District, he said that he had known Matt for many years and extolled his tennis playing abilities.
Matt said that the Carmichael Parks and Recreation district is dependent of the Sacramento County Parks District. In the District there are a number of parks, a community garden where you can rent a plot and grow your own vegetables, egg hunts, the Wall of Honor, Concerts in the Park, and Christmas Tree lighting and others.
The Park puts on programs and classes throughout the year, Tiny Tots, Youth Sports, Adult Sports, Fitness Classes, and Summer Day Camps.
The “Kids Hang Out” room is located at the old La Sierra High School and is a very large room. Matt showed us some slides of the room. In Summer, they provide summer day camps and have more than 170 kids from June to August. During the school year the “Kids Hang Out” program provides for 55-60 children (next year 65-70) who use the time after school to socialize and keep active.
Matt says that now the room needs a make-over. He provided a very detailed plan of what is proposed. The room will have designated areas where different activities will occur and better utilization of space and more room to play. It will be more visually appealing- a welcoming environment.
The designated spaces will have reading nooks and manipulative areas – they will need storage furniture (keeping things in order), interesting floor tiles, and benches – and coat racks.
Matt envisioned fresh coat of paint on the floor and the whole room and to put in carpet.
Matt expressed “thanks” for the interest that the Carmichael Club has shown for the project. With our Club’s help, they will benefit thousands of kids and their families! The project will probably take a couple of days of our member’s time to complete the project (we have already voted our interest in doing this) and it probably will not happen until the 2nd or 3rd week in August. Ed Bunting will be looking into matching grants for the project.
Acting President Dick Bauer thanked Matt for his informative and comprehensive presentation and mentioned that, in his honor, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library).

Fines/Happy Thoughts and Raffle

HAPPY FINES

icky Boatwright  smoothed right into "Happy Thoughts" ,after the great presentation "Kids Hang Out" . David Thorman thanked Phil Danz for all his hard work in putting on the Speech Contest; Dick Bauer said he got to spend 3 days with his grandkids ; Walter Malhoski said that his kid or kids? came by and helped out in projects around his new house; Jay Boatwright apologized for being late to the meeting; Ed Bunting put in some $ for the great District Assembly he attended over the weekend and guess what he found there? A landscaper (Rotarian) to do projects for him; Vicky thanked all who attended the District Assembly; Doug Haaland gave notice that he will be gone to Arizona and won't be here next week but he mentioned that he attended a "Best of Carmichael" event - does that constitute a make up?

Your bulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
  1. Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under the Birch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
  2. Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
  3. Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
  4. Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odyssey of Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
  5. and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this“On the Fly”: Hobo Literature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, June 26, 2018
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library

As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
