A lot was happening in Carmichael Rotaryland this past two weeks, so that I have decided to
have this edition encompass all of our activities - namely the meeting of June 5th, the Rotary Rivercats baseball game,
the outstanding Carmichael Rotary Easter Seals golf tournament, and our meeting of June 12th in this Newsletter.
The first meeting, June 5th, was opened by our slowly shrinking but still proud nearly lame duck President Dick Bauer, and he gave the podium over to political expert Doug Haaland, who, after leading our group in the "Pledge" , gave the following "Thought for the day:
It has been 14 years since Ronald Reagan passed away; 50 years since Robert Kennedy was assassinated; tomorrow, June 6th, is the 74 Anniversary of D-Day.
"There are no constraints of the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect."
Ronald Reagan
The second meeting, June 12th, was conducted by shrinking lame but proud President Dick Bauer, and he gave the podium to our newest member Jane Lampard Haaland who led us in the "Pledge" and gave the following "Thought of the Day":
"Giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our mind to the unexplained words occupied by the needs of others"

► ROTARY INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE - Toronto - June 22-27th
It was a great day at Ancil Hoffman - weather wise - with a slight breeze and temperatures in the mid- 80s. 139 Golfers lined up to play in a shotgun and we were told that this is the largest, longest continuous Golf Tournament in Northern California. We were also told that this tournament, under the auspices of the Carmichael Rotary Club and donating all profits to Easter Seals has raised over 1 million 200,00 dollars over the 39 years of it's existence - and the proceeds are growing. For instance, we have had donated upwards of $70,000 this year from 21 sponsors. We can certainly be proud of our wonderful partnership with Easter Seals! And guess what? It was a lot of fun. Richard Shipp and Jay Sedlak, along with the many volunteers (from our Club and Easter Seals) should be congratulated on a job well done.
Berta Boegel was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. She graduated from Sacramento State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and promptly joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps for two years. It was a few years before she realized her dream of connecting lower income children with libraries by getting her Masters of Library Science from San Jose State University. She has loved being a librarian since 1993 and has worked at a variety of libraries: Oakland, Dixon, Yolo County, Woodland and finally landed at Sacramento Public Library 8 years ago where she is currently the Branch Supervisor for the Carmichael Library.
Her husband, Jim, works for UC Davis School of Nursing and her son, Joseph, lives and works in Chico, CA. They have both wonderfully put up with Berta’s obsession to visit the library of every town they travel to!
Berta came to our Club with a message - a letter of thanks from Rivka K. Sass, Sacramento Library Director, for our donation of over 150 books to the Carmichael Public Library. It seems that when David Thorman was president, it was decided that, instead of giving each speaker a coffee mug, tie pin, etc., we would do something of value in the community in their honor. It was a brilliant idea. Berta also came with an informational message about all the many services that your public library gives, actually too many to recount here, but some are:
---sensory movie and book for Autistic or other who have problems with reading
---the library gives a first book to 1st graders (something like our Dictionary Project)
---teacher cards that let teachers check out books for a longer period
---a prom drive that gets donated prom dresses that are donated to teenagers for free
---summer reading project, read 5 books for summer and get a prize (train set etc for kids, $250 for adults)
---language software for members - Rosetta Stone and two others
---free museum passes and discount on the Napa wine train
---download books, audio books, you can download for 3 weeks on your hard drive and then is disappears
---what is new:
* lets talk education for the homeless
* in November, suicide will be the topic
* have discussed racism
* career online - you can get high school diploma with the aid of the library
* free lunch at 13 branches - vendor Natomas United Way and others
--- cooking programs for adults.
--- you can give book donations, audible books under Friends of Library program
--- have read to dogs program, kid brings dog to lessen tension
Berta then read the "Thank You" to our Club.

Dear Rotarians:
I know that Berta Boegel, our amazing Carmichael Library Supervisor, regularly thanks you
profusely for your generous and ongoing generosity to support readers and reading in your
community, but I wanted to add my profound and sincere thanks to hers.
I know you can acknowledge every speaker at your meetings in so many ways. That you choose
to support Sacramento Public Library by providing funds to Berta to purchase a book in honor
of your speakers demonstrates a commitment to our community, to literacy, learning and the
library in a lasting way.
Thank you for all you do for our community (and the world) to support literacy every day and
for going the extra mile for Sacramento Public Library. Literacy is truly forever and you are
heroes. Thank you.
With sincere gratitude,
Rivkah K. Sass | Library Director" - www.saclibrary.org
It was fitting that our President Dick announced to Berta that, in honor of her presentation, a book will be dedicated to the Carmichael library!

RAFFLE
So it happened on the June 5th meeting that Vinne Iosso
did have the winning ticket but he didn't draw the winning card.
He drew the 6 of Spades.
The generous phantom donor gave him a nice bottle of wine.
Soon the meeting of June 12th, happy George Abraham, on sabbatical contrived
to get the winning ticket, but drew only the 3 of Hearts. Still, George, was in a unusually
happy mood.
He graciously accepted the consolation bottle of wine from the phantom donor....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
rboegel@saclibrary.org
As of April 10, 2017, we have purchased nearly 150 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
