President Vicky Boatwright bravely opened her last meeting as president.
The last meeting of the 2019-2020 Rotary Year.
For some reason,
there was a smile on her face.
She rang the bell and announced that she, herself would lead us in the “Pledge” and “Happy thought” for the last time as President of the Club. After the pledge, she gave the "thought" below:
After performing a few perfunctory Rotary functions, President Vicky gave a poignant final speech to the Club.....
Before I am subjected to the demotion ritual and forget an important message I want to convey, I’d like to share that I am THANKFUL for all of you who:
welcomed me into this club with open arms almost 8 years ago
had faith in me to lead the club this year
supported and encouraged me all year long
gave of yourselves selflessly all year and worked hard to make our community and the world a better place:
did a terrific makeover for the Carmichael Parks After-School Kids Hangout room
made great contributions to The Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus
continued our long-standing Christmas basket program
supported high school and college students with scholarships
participated in Carmichael Elementary’s holiday party and donated a grill to the school for future events
donated dictionaries to third graders at several local schools
donated a concrete picnic bench to Carmichael Park District
donated funds to 2 local food banks
and hung in there when COVID-19 required sheltering-in-place, and were flexible enough to switch to Zoom meetings so we could stay connected with each other.
And I am particularly thankful for my husband who
is my rock,
is my sounding board,
gives great advice,
and has been the most amazing supportive husband.
THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING WHO YOU ARE – THE BEST ROTARIANS AROUND
HONORARY

ANNOUNCEMENTS
♦ Blood is badly needed:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
♦ Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!
♦ The next Rotary International Convention will be in Taipei, Taiwan, June 11-16, 2021- put it on your calendar for lodging soon, while the prices are lowest. Just being optimistic about resolving COVID-19 restrictions...
►JULY 7 - DARK FOR 4 OF JULY
►JULY 14 - CLUB ASSEMBLY
►AUGUST 11 - Brent Hastey, D.G. District 5180

THE BEST EVER WOMAN PRESIDENT
IN THE HISTORY THE CARMICHAEL ROTARY CLUB!
Because of the virtual format, we really couldn't get our hands on President Vicky, but Past President Greg Herrera did the next best thing by giving a sterling, humorous, witty slide show and let consort Jay dress up Vicky in her role as Queen Victoria (which is Vicky's real name)
The slide show was too long to be reproduced in this newsletter but I thought I would give you a flavor by putting in some highlights. Above is depicted Vicky's year starting off with a "bang" by having an article written about her in the Carmichael Times - much to the astonishment of consort Jay.
Above illustrates the "woman power" aligned with our Club at her inauguration and the Holiday Party....
Greg took us through the many exploits of our Club during most of her her year until the COVID-19 - Kids Hang Out Project, Crab Feed, Holiday Party at Carmichael grammar school, the successful Speech Contest, wonderful Foundation Dinner at the North Ridge Country Club. She also brought in two new members, Katha Danz and Frank Pease.
Then President Vicky transformed our meeting to "Virtual" zoom meetings in late March, 2020 and below is their "virtual" image, Queen Victoria and her "consort" Jay, looking down at the "little people"- "very interesting" and it meant that Corona beer became popular which excited both Boatwrights (below).
Greg took us through an interesting saga (with photos) of Vicky'sformative years where she was in training to become the first woman president of our Club. We looked at some Vicky's interests and exploits such as the Indy-NASCAR races, traveling to Cuba, and camping with their RV.
Below is Queen Victoria in all her regalia - as she will be remembered long into posterity!
Then Greg placed the following commemorative slide and toast which expressed all of our thoughts about Vicky and her year....
HAPPY FINES
As was fitting, President Vicky oversaw the last "Happy Fines" of the year. Our valuable and esteemed member, Dr. Hamid Ahmadi stood up and conveyed (in a Virtual Manner) his message that he would BONG THE GONG for three reasons: One because for the terrific job that President Vicky did during her year, One for his wedding anniversary with Paris of 46 years, and lastly one for the courage and determination of our new president, David Thorman, who is becoming president again after having completed 1 and 1/4 terms; Bill Baxter who recently joined the 80s club in age (his recent birthday) and not celebrated because of Covid-19, RANG THE BELL for $100 to the Club and in recognition of the great job that President Vicky had done this last year; Karen Munsterman RANG THE BELL again to compliment President Vicky and that she will be "one year older" on July 4th; PDG Jim Thompson who RANG THE BELL for Vicky and David, and for Holger Knaack who is to be the new incoming R.I. president, the first president from Germany; and last but not least Vinne Iosso became a DOUBLE BELLRINGER for Vicky's great job and that he is also a year older; Nice way to end the year, 5 Bell Ringers and 1 Bong - $600.00.

RAFFLE
SO DOUBLE, DOUBLE DITTO, DITTO, DITTO, FOR 13 WEEKS) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....and the Rotary Year has ended.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
