We had our SEVENTH “virtual” meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club, May 12, 2020. President Vicky Boatwright, recognized consort and compatriot Jay Boatwright who, after performing the "Pledge", gave a very appropriate "Thought for the Day" as follows:
EVENTS CHANGED OR POSTPONED OR CANCELED BECAUSE OF THE (COVID-19) PANDEMIC
♦ The board tonight decided to designate Carmichael Presbyterian food bank for all donations that are pledged and paid by our members during happy fines.
♦ RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awakening) camps have been cancelled this year.
♦ REAL :These hour-long Saturday online training classes are available for any member to attend, but particularly incoming. These are subjects that are usually offered during the District Assembly. You must register ahead of time, so go to the District website and scroll down to see the links to register for each class individually. (SEE MORE INFO FURTHER DOWN IN THIS BULLETIN)
♦ RI has asked that no in-person meetings take place through the end of this Rotary year (June 30). We will wait for further direction as it is developed by the Rotary Pandemic Task Force.
•Blood is badly needed, stocks are down:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
• Since our meetings are on virtual format, Chuck McBride is frustrated and desperate for money for the Club, there are two ways you can give to him - send a check to Carmichael Rotary Club, P. O. Box 129, Carmichael, CA 95609 or a better way, is to just let Dick Bauer knowthe amount you want to give and he will love putting it on your credit card....
• How to help during this crisis. Now Rotary is recommending Volunteer Surge. You can train to speak to patients and seniors who are just released from the hospital to see how they are doing. This will relieve nurse personnel during this busy time. D.G. Ray Ward also says that there is a 30 hour training program to become a nurses assistant. More soon.
• Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!
Dick Bauer introduced our speaker: Ken Malovos is a Graduate of Stanford (1966) and UC Hastings College of the Law (1969). He spent 2 years in the Army and then 12 years as a public defender in Sacramento, trying all kinds of criminal cases, from DUI to Murder. He then went into private practice as a business litigator, appearing in courts and arbitrations on property, construction, intellectual property, partnership dissolution, contract, employment and malpractice kinds of cases. In 2008, he left his practice and now works exclusively as a mediator and arbitrator, trying to resolve cases before they go to court.
Ken has written four Lawyer Mike Zorich novels: Contempt of Court, Fatal Reunion, Sweet Justice, and One Night in Amboise, all legal mystery thrillers. Ken lives his wife, Michele in our favorite city of Carmichael.
Ken said that his presentation was for those who might be interested in writing a novel. He started 12 years ago and was interested in fiction and got the idea for his first novel while involved in a case in Modesto. Ken thinks that one needs to start with an idea. In preparation Ken took classes and read books, some are: Stephen King on writing, Anne Lamott, who wrote “Bird by Bird” and describes that to start writing a novel, she recommends write “shitty first drafts”. He took courses online and attended “Left Coast Crime”, an organization which puts on an annual mystery convention.
So, Ken learned certain “rules” and has suggestions, which he used on his first Mike Zorich novel “Contempt of Court”. The idea started when on a case in Modesto, he didn’t want to give over his “discovery” to the other side. The judge issued an “order to show cause”. The idea germinated.
Ken’s suggestion is “Write what you know”, and you can do an outline of the story or just write by “the seat of your pants” – organically -which Ken favors. Next, gather your characters, in Ken’s novels, his protagonist or hero is Mike Zorich and the antagonist is the judge who is against him. Then, you can have a “helper” and maybe a “love interest”. Maybe also some “role players”. You should write a sketch of every character. He has clipped photos of people out of magazines to look at and refer back to them, Ken writes 10 to 15 pages every day – he says it is fun for him. It is best to show a character and just tell about him. For instance, you can say the character drove his car, through winding streets to Ancil Hoffman Golf Course, met and talked to some interesting members and then gave a talk. Makes more interesting to use dialogue.
Another suggestion is to write short chapters so that you keep the reader’s interest. This is how modern novels are written. There should be a “storyline” that traces a period of time and the main character should learn something – should be a beginning, middle, and the end. Mick Zorich, the hero, is running on the American River bike trail, gets beat up and the assailant takes the keys to his car, and then bad things happen to him – this is the gist of the story, he has a girl friend and they have sex (not easy to write about), and humor was brought in by fellow lawyer who tells a lawyer joke.
Once you are done with the draft novel, then it needs to be edited. Most likely the story is too long and you need to pare it down – most novels are 100,000 words, make copies and ask others to read it. You can hire professional editors who will give you a lot of input.
The next thing is to try to get the book published. Ken said he sent his first book to 40 or 50 publishers and got rejected. He self-published in Amazon for free, but you have to hire people to make the novel suitable for publication and had “printing on demand” POD – that cost ½ of the publication and at most, Ken gets ¼ of sales. Ken won First Prize for Category, “Legal and Mayhem” competition in 2014 with “Contempt of Court” and was a finalist in the “Thriller and Suspense” competition in 2016 for “Fatal Reunion”. His first novel took 5 years to write, the second and third about two year each. One interesting fact is that 85 percent of novel readers are women.
His books can be purchased on Amazon.com. What an interesting presentation, even though it was “virtual” and we could only get the “audio” because of a glitch, Ken’s passion came clearly through.
President Vicky thanked Ken for his presentation and informed him that, in honor of his presentation, a book, (hopefully a mystery novel) will be donated to the Carmichael Public Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library). Ken mentioned that his books can be found at both libraries.
v icky Boatwright conducted the "Happy Fines" today, Chuck McBride popped in saying how delightful it is to have Shyama Chakroborty and Dennis Moffett at our meeting and for this reason, put in one allotment ($20); Karen Munsterman also pledged one allotment - she is just happy ; Ed Bunting GONGED THE BONG for polio+ and his wife Jennie's birthday is this month and his daughter-in-law Jennie Bunting (same name) just published a smut novel (his words, not mine) called "Fear"; Jeff Thompson RANG THE BELL for his birthday -put the money in whatever is needed; Jay Boatwright offered two (4) allotments, $40 for the Club, $20 to polio+; $20 to the Food Bank..... One Gong the Bong and one Ring the Bell and 6 allotments = $320 - not bad...

RAFFLE
SO (DOUBLE DITTO DITTO FROM LAST WEEK) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
