Rise Against Hunger - Jim Quinney
Rise Against Hunger
The Rise Against Hunger organization is a International Food Organization which mostly operates in developing countries and benefits people with poor nutritional issues. It was founded in 2006 by Dr. Ray Benjamen of the United Methodist Church. Jim Quinney thanked us for inviting him here once more to give an update about what they have been doing.
He started off with a video which mentioned that volunteers put food in packages and then they are sent worldwide to people in need. Their goal is to eliminate hunger and think that they can attain this goal by 2030! Right now there are 2 billion people who are in some sort of food insecurity (est. by the U.N.). The biggest cause of death in the world is hunger - this is just terrible.
Jim mentioned that there are "pathways" to eliminating hunger:

Nourish Lives: by finding and vetting at risk communities. Empowering people with sustainable projects.
Provide Emergency Relief - example is a project which brought food from Costa Rica and the Bahamas for Venezuela.
Last week Rotary International gave the title of "Collaborating Organization" to the Rise Against Hunger organization. This is an important recognition.
Last year, they had successful and fun volunteer packing of food at the District Conference supported by District Governor Jack Arney. This year there will be a Rotary 5180 Meal Packing Experience on Saturday, April 18th, 2020 at the McClellan Conference Center. A flyer about this event is below. Please consider volunteering for this event. In the Philippines, one pack will feed a child for $2 per day and 50 cents for a subset of children. In Vietnam, they help poor people to get into some sort of business. An example is in Cambodia where they taught 200 women how to grow mushrooms, allowing them to make 2- 4 their previous level of income.
The food packets come 36 bags to a box and will feed one child for one year for $75. Jim hypothesized that if everyone of District 5180 members attended their event and volunteered to pack boxes and would give one box ($75), it would do a tremendous amount of good and would be good for Rotary membership and you could use social media to tell your friends.
Jim closed with a quote: " If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together".
Pres. Vicky said that she attended the "Meal Packing Experience" at the District Conference last year and it was so much fun. They had music and energy was everywhere. She delighted Jim by announcing that a book, in his honor, will be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Library System).

LATEST BOOK DONATIONS

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
