The Meeting

Our esteemed President Dick Bauer , welcomed members and guests
to the 1st meeting of the new year and the beginning of the 3nd quarter of the 2017/2018 Rotary Year.
He immediately asked one of our "deep thinking" members George Abraham to accomplish the "Pledge" and the "Thought":

EAT SLOWLY, AND LIE ABOUT YOUR AGE."

Happy New Year!

Cartoon taken from recent "Birdy" of the Swindon Rotary Club
Our Club Comedian Greg Herrera told a slightly naughty joke:

A sailor met a pirate in a bar, and the sailor couldn’t help but notice that the pirate was worse for wear.  He had a wooden peg leg, a hook on one hand, and an eye patch.
So the sailor asked the pirate how he got the peg leg, and the pirate answered, “Well, matey, I got washed overboard one night in a fierce storm…an’ dern if a shark didn't go and bite off me leg.”
Then the sailor asked, “so how’d did you get the hook?”
And the pirate answered, “Well there was a fierce fight while boarding a ship one time, and a bloke with a cutlass cut me hand off.”
Finally the sailor asked, “So how’d you get the eyepatch?”
And the pirate responded “a seagull pooped in me eye.”
And the sailor said, “You mean to tell me you lost an eye just because a seagull pooped in it?”
The pirate said, “Well, it was the first day I had me hook.”

Bada boom!

► DISTRICT CONFERENCE - May 10-13, 2018:
Chuck McBride has extolled  the fun that you are going to have by attending the District Conference, May 10-13, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency at Lake Tahoe, Incline Village.
There will be a significant contingent from the Carmichael Club and there will be a special room for our president who will have a great open bar. You will meet many great Rotarians in the District, great programs and this year, we will have our District "Speech Contest" at the conference. There is a special price of 150+ per night for rooms. Contact Deb Thornton (Conf. Chair) - debbiesan@comcast.net ; or Daniela Calvitti (Registration) - dccalvitti7@aol.com  Flyer is further down in this bulletin.

Schedule of Events

♦  TREE PLANTING PROJECT:  R. I. President, Ian Risely, wants a tree planted for every Rotarian for his year.  It is one criteria for the Presidential citation. On Saturday, January 20, 2018, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, we will plant 20 trees at the Effie Yeaw Nature Center. Having had the terrible Los Angeles fires, we need as many trees as we can get.

CARMICHAEL DISTRICT SPEECH CONTEST: February 6th, 2018, Phil Danz (Speech contest chair) has already 2 participants from Victory Christian School, and perhaps more on the way; George Abraham is working on Del Campo High School for more contestants. Phil will send out shortly a signup sheet for volunteers to be Judges, Timekeeper, Score keepers and Sgt. at Arms. A good thing this year is that the winners of the regional contest will hold their finale at the District Conference - always a fun time.

♦  DICTIONARIES: Bill Donnoe  announced that the Dictionaries for middle school students will be distributed to schools on February 28th. On the day before, on the Tuesday, February 27th meeting, we will put labels and bookmark in them.

♦  UGANDA WATER PROJECT: David Thorman has announced that the  Uganda water is going well. He has written the following memorandum:
Carmichael Rotary Club Member,

We are within $9,000 of our  $56,000 goal for the water project.  We have set up a website for GoFundMe as a vehicle for donations.  Please copy the following message and email it to your friends:

"My Rotary Club of Carmichael, California has partnered with The Rotary Club of Tororo, Uganda to build five 300 foot deep wells with solar powered submersible pumps to provide clean drinking water to 10,000 people and three primary schools in Poyemi Village, Uganda where one of our members, Richard Olebe, was born.

Clean, safe drinking water is not available for over 300 million people in Sub Saharan Africa. One child dies every 16 seconds due to water contaminated bacteria and parasites.

We need your help in raising $56,000 for our $200,000 project.  The remaining funds will come from funds from the Rotary Districts 5180 & 9211 and The Rotary International World Fund.
A tax deductible donation of $100 will provide clean water to a family of 5 for over 10 years.
Any dollar donation would be appreciated!   We are a 501(c)(3) organization: EIN 81-0777203.

Let me know if you have questions.  Please forward this email to your friends.

Thanks!"

Thank you, David
Another suggestion from David is to simply email "Contacts or Friends" in your address book. David brought in 3 or 4 donations from do

♦  Bill Donnoe mentioned that it might be a good idea to consider buying tickets and giving items to the Crab Feed this year because, as we all know, a new tax law is going to become law in Congress that may eliminate tax write-offs!

♦ LITERARY PROGRAM - TUESDAY, JANUARY 16TH -LORIE RHEAMS

♦ TREE PLANTING - SATURDAY, JANUARY 20TH

♦ VOCATIONAL PROGRAM - JANUARY 23RD - "SHERIFF'S AWARD"

♦  FIRESIDE: Sunday, January 28 at Jim Thompson's home.

CUBAN TRIP - JANUARY 30TH - JAY & VICKY BOATWRIGHT

CARMICHAEL CLUB SPEECH CONTEST: FEBRUARY 6TH, 2018

♦  CARMICHAEL CRAB FEED -  SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2018

CLUB ASSEMBLY - JANUARY 9, 2018
Well, it was sort of what could be called a"hump meeting" for our President in that his tenure as president now is at the halfway mark. President Bauer called the Assembly meeting and let us know that you can still take a donation to Rotary International or Ugandan Water project from your IRA and that way - get a tax deduction.  He conscripted two members to read the "Four-Way Test" and the "Object of Rotary", both felt better after reading it. Then our President, who has been getting better and better at working the video and sound system, treated us to a wonderful inspiring video lecture  by P.P.Cliff Dochterman to the Rotary Club of Petaluma on the occasion of their 90 anniversary.
Our traveled member, Shyama Chakroborty, just came back from India where he attended a family wedding - gave us a report about his trip and attending a meeting at the Rotary Club of Calcutta.
"Dr. Shyama Chakroborty visited the Rotary Club of Calcutta during his recent trip to India in December of last year. Rotary Club of Calcutta is one of the oldest Rotary Clubs in Asia and is involved in a number of projects dedicated to provide education, health care, drinking water and other essential services to the underprivileged villagers living in many  remote areas. Mr. Saumen Ray, the President of Rotary Club of Calcutta also joined Dr. Chakroborty at his hotel over breakfast and informed him about the various projects his club is currently involved in. Dr. Chakroborty is exploring if there is any suitable project where he can potentially get involved jointly with the Rotary Club of Calcutta. Dr. Chakroborty gave them the Banner of the Carmichael Rotary Club and brought back the banner from the Rotary Club of Calcutta". A picture of Shyama and his Rotary banner from Calcutta is shown below at the end of this story in the "pictures section".

President Bauer complimented the Club on the Christmas Baskets project that we accomplished on December 23 and 24 so smoothly. A big credit goes to Rich Plath who spent many hours planning and then making sure everything went smoothly. We fed 100 needy families and Rich sent around a "thank you" letter from one of the families.
Doug Haaland announced the good news that not only did he show up at the meeting with his new bride, Jane, but he is going to put in a spread in the Newspaper about the Crab Feed!
A lot of talk about the crab feed ensued: Phil Danz talked about the dessert bar and the importance of getting a cake or other dessert from bakeries or restaurants; others contributed their ideas, but David Thorman took the cake (no pun intended) by telling all that he would take any raffle prizes (or other) and put in his spacious garage. So if you have a raffle prize, bring it to the meeting and give it to David.
Also, there will be a "Fireside" at Jim Thompson's home on Sunday, January 28th ( I assume mid-day)

The highlight of the meeting was that our esteemed member Vicky Boatwright was nominated to become PRES-ELECT-ELECT and was unanimously elected by the membership with no opposition (who would dare!) Congratulations Vicky....

Fines/Happy Thoughts & Raffle

HAPPY THOUGHTS

Now, President Elect-elect and "Happy Thought" counselor, Vicky Boatwright , was back and that was good (not that Troy Drennon didn't do a good job last week). Vicky asked for offerings and: Stan Roe complimented Rich Plath on what a good job he did with the Christmas Baskets and blessed the Club with some dough; Mark Beil got up and became a BELL RINGER ; Walter Malhoski has finally moved into his new home and has missed his piano but now has a digital piano ( I'm glad that his moving saga has ended); a sad offering by Tony Marques - he lost his brother in law (not Bob) and said that he was a veteran  and a victim of agent orange (he was 70); Jay Boatwright celebrated that he went ice skating for the first time and did quite well, also he congratulated his wife Vicky for becoming President Elect-elect; Greg Herrera offered a bitter sweet story that a family member had two automobile accidents within 6 days, both not the member's fault, the cars were t-boned both times, but the good news is that nobody was hurt; again sad that Donna Thorne lost a brother last week; and on a good note Doug Haaland got to introduce Jane again to our Club now, as his legally married wife!

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of October, 2017, we have purchased over 120 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
