CLUB FLAG FROM PUERTO VALLARTA - Alan Gallaway showed perspicacity by visiting a Rotary Club while in Puerto Vallarta and bringing their flag back to add to our collection of flags from all over the world. Perhaps others will follow.

Vocational Moment - Jane Lampard

JANE LAMPARD

Vocational Moment

Today we had one of our newest members, Jane Lampard, to give us a vocational moment. Her talk perfectly dovetailed with the vocation of our speaker, Moses Osoro, who is also a nurse.

Jane said that, prior to nursing, she had the important job of raising three beautiful children. Then, when the oldest was in Junior High School, she met this guy Doug, who had a positive influence on her, and he encouraged her to go back to school (which she did) and went into nursing. Jane’s advice is “Follow Your Dreams”.  This last year she has been specialized in skilled nursing and now goes to private homes – giving people care and loves it. What a great story!

One Child, One Hen - Moses Osoro

ONE CHILD, ONE HEN

We had the pleasure of meeting Moses Osoro who has a similar story to our own member, Richard Olebe, in that he was born in Africa – not Uganda but in Kenya, in very poor circumstances and then was fortunate to make his way with his wife Emily to America and to succeed and become a registered nurse. He is promoting a very interesting charity that has had success in his home country – called One Child, One Hen.
He talked about his home town of Kisuma, Kenya which is far away from major cities and have high rates of disease. Moses and Emily were the only ones in their extended family to get out. When in America, they had this dream to help those left behind. For two years they saved money, collected bottles and cans and had $1000 to build a chicken coop. Then getting maize for food and with electricity developed a hatchery, sunk wells for water, and now have groups of women , 10 to each coop – each member receives 20 eggs per day, 6 are used for members, 6 are sold, 6 for management, and 2 put back into the hatchery. Another group of 10 women will administer another coop and it will go on from there. The idea is to expand to other communities, teaching people how to make a living.
Moses would like other Clubs/Organizations to donate money (similar to what we did with our Ugandan Project). His goal is to amass $100,000 to complete the project.
A question was asked about what happens to the hens and Moses said that after 2 years of laying, they provide meat for the families.
Moses or his wife travel back to Kenya every six months – they are very dedicated to the project.
You can learn more by going to:
(Your bulletin editor recommends going to their website, it is most interesting)
They are hoping to have the wherewithal to complete the project within 6 months.
Tim Davidson, Rotarian from the Point West Club, accompanied Moses to our Club said that Moses is considering becoming a Rotarian….

Fines/Happy Thoughts & Raffle

HAPPY FINES

therapy session ensued, orchestrated again by counselor Vicky Boatwright. Phil Danz made the mistake of asking Greg Hererra about his wonder dog Sparky and wham, Phil got fined for bringing up the subject.  It seems that dog Sparky chewed up Greg's hearing aid and assorted other things like his grandson's retainer and wicker chair. I give you Greg's own report on the subject.
Hearing aid:  $300 (Insurance covered the $2,500.00 initial cost). Carpet Stains:  $200.00 Friendship factor:  Priceless.
Pictures provided…see below, Alan Gallaway gave money because he is membership chairman and every time he goes away, a new member appears; Walter Malhoski is out of the arm sling after his fall and put on his own shoes and socks; Mark Beil remarked on how great was Moses's presentation ; Jay Boatwright ditto; Tim Davidson, guest and Rotarian with the Point West Club, mentioned that his father was a member and past president of our Club; Ed Bunting GONGED THE BONG for proceeds to go to the "One Child, One Hen" project; Don Wangberg just put in $ acknowledging what a good job the Club does; Chuck McBride put in for Jane Lampard's great Vocational Moment talk; Dick Bauer BONGED THE GONG for the "One Child, One Hen" project.

Your bulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
  1. Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under the Birch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
  2. Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
  3. Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
  4. Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odyssey of Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
  5. and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this“On the Fly”: Hobo Literature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, June 26, 2018
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
