District 5180:

Rotary International:

JULY, 2021

TRANSITION MONTH
AS THE ROTARY WORLD TURNS

Dick Bauer started the 1st meeting of the Carmichael Club with the demeanor of someone who had been there before and gave the aura of confidence and optimism for the Club in this (his year) as President. After soliciting the Pledge and the reading of the “4 Way Test” by esteemed member George Abraham, George also gave the following inspirational “Thought for the Day”:

“I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy.
I woke and I saw that life is all service.
I served and I saw that service is joy.”
– Kahlil Gibran

President Bauer continued to let us know that the meeting today is a Club Assembly in which the new Rotary leadership would be announced and proposed projects and aspirations for the upcoming year would be set forth to the membership.

As you know, Rotary is unique in that ALL positions of leadership are changed every year – from top to bottom. Our leaders for the 2021-2022 Rotary Year are Shekhar Mehta, President of Rotary International, Desiree Wilson, District Governor for District 5180, and Dick Bauer, President of the Rotary Club of Carmichael, California.

Rotary International's theme is " SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES" and our District's theme is: "CREATING TODAY'S SUPERHEROES".
President presented his Board and the new Carmichael Foundation Board:

During the assembly, members talked of many issues, President Bauer talk about having 2X2 vocational presentations, to bring back the chuckle for the day (clean chuckle), have more social events and field trips and Walter Malhoski put out a call for members to suggest those who might make good speakers.
President Bauer asked whether or not the Club should have a Crab Feed, and the members in attendance answered in the affirmative with a vote -raising hands. It was noted that we need "all hands-on deck" - working for at least four hours during the day and buying and getting friends to buy tickets. February, 17, 2022 is the date. Make sure you can be there and help out.
In order to have the seed money for expenses before the Crab Feed, Pres. Bauer, asked for a motion to take $10,000 from the Club Account and put it into the Foundation account. The motion was made and it was duly seconded and passed by an overwhelming affirmative vote (by hand).
It was announced by Pres. Bauer that a Jim Thompson Fellow category is being considered that will be similar to the Paul Harris Fellow award - with a similar amount donated to our Club Foundation, so that one can become a Jim Thompson Fellow. It seems a fitting way to honor perhaps our greatest member who did so much for our Club.
On a similar note, Chuck McBride announced that all Past District Governors of 5180 and 5190 have made a contribution to the Rotary International Foundation in the memory of Past District Governor Jim Thompson.
P.P. Vicky Boatwright noted that we have been asked to put on a "pancake breakfast" at the Carmichael Elementary School on August 10th, 2021 - should be fun and it also was noted that a work party from our Club is requested at Effie Yeaw Nature Center on Saturday, November 6th, 2021 for digging and such. Keep those dates in mind.

Their messages confirm that we are making an impact by promoting education for worthy students at ARC. See below:

HAPPY THOUGHTS

President Dick Bauer allowed "Happy Thoughts" commemorating the first of the new year. He was not disappointed. Rich Plath RANG THE BELL in celebration of our new President; Mark Beil saw a bevy of pheasants on the way to the meeting and, waxing poetically, thanked God for all of nature with an appropriate RING OF THE BELL; Dick Bauer outdid everybody by RINGING THE BELL and BONGING THE GONG  and then tried to take it back by saying it was contingent on the return of his bell which was blatantly stolen at his installation as president, but then weakened and will fork over the fines anyway - he got no sympathy from the members - but he is still looking forward to a good year; Karen Munsterman RANG THE BELL for her birthday; Vince Iosso RANG THE BELL because the 3rd of July was his 80th birthday; Geronimo RANG THE BELL for Don Wangberg who was, in his youth, a great baseball player and for his wife Sarah Stoltz who fell off their deck recently and broke two vertebrae - now Geronimo is her nurse and gives care with love; Bill Donnoe gave $20 for the Club; Ed Bunting RANG THE BELL to express his desire to "smell the roses" as his daughter had a birthday on July 1st.  Seven BELL RINGERS and one GONG BONGER -wow, we are off to a good start!

BELL RINGERS

Donations as of 6-15-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
