♦ BOOKS FOR SCHOOL IN UGANDA: In our last report on the "Gang of Eight" trip , I, your bulletin editor) forgot to mention that the Club donated $500 of school books to a school in Tororo, one to which one of our water reach by spigot ( picture below):
♦ President Vicky is still looking for someone to host our "Holiday Party" on maybe Tuesday, December 10th. The host may provide just Hors V'Oeuvres or snacks and drinks. Will anybody volunteer their home for this? Let Vicky know....
♦ Holiday Baskets: Rich Plath
"We already are working with the San Juan Unified School District for our 2019 program. We enjoy the strong support of the Superintendent, Kent Kern and staff in charge of serving students who need support urgently. Our program is unique in that we serve many student families in our community who need the help the most.
It is important that we get an early count of those in our club who will help with home deliveries and bulk deliveries to the district office for further distribution. We will be doing our home deliveries Wednesday morning, December 18. We need help delivering food baskets to the district, also on Wednesday.
Another important part of our food program is helping assemble the food baskets on Monday, December 16 and Tuesday, December 17. We may be needed to help the district further distribute our baskets on Thursday, December 19.
My request is that each member communicate via e-mail or otherwise how he or she will help the week of December 16-19. An important aspect of our program has been our success recruiting family and friends. We would appreciate a tally of these other helpers as well. It is important to our club's reputation that we have good participation and that we fulfill the commitment we make to the school district.
Thank you.

NOVEMBER IS FOUNDATION MONTH
► November 5: PDG Glenn Fong - ALL ABOUT THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
► November 12: Bob Mutchler - ABOUT POLIO+
► November 19: Club Foundation Dinner at Northridge Golf Course - a gala event!
In keeping with President Vicky’s idea that “All work makes a dull Rotary Club”, we dispensed with the work of Rotary on October 29th, and under the tutelage of ProfessorHamidAhmadi, Programs Director, met at a wonderful restaurant, the 36 Handles in El Dorado Hill, and just had fun.
Twenty of us were there ( 2 scrubbed at the last minute due to emergency): Those who attended were:
Hamid and Paris Ahmada, David Thorman and Dana Newell, Jay and Vicky Boatwright, Phil and Katha Danz, Rich and Debbie Plath, Walter Malhoski, Troy Drennon,George and Julie Abraham, Chuck McBride and Mo Browning-McBride, and Mark and Carol Beil.
We had so much fun that almost all of us forgot to take pictures of the event. Only Dana who took photos of Phil, leading the assemblage in the famous German Song, Du Du Leigst Mir im Herzen (in celebration of Octoberfest) to an enthusiastic audience! The song was so popular that Phil was asked to treat everyone to an encore of the singing at the end of the party!
Phil - singing to an enthralled audience (below)
Oh! And Hamid entertained us with puzzles. One puzzle was this: there were three very smart people; they know there are 5 hats; 3 white and 2 black. They were blind folded. Then from 5 hats, a hat was placed on each of their heads. The blind folds were taken off and the 1 st individual who could see what color the others had on was asked “What color hat do you have on (they can not see their own hat, and the other two individuals must not say). The 1 st individual can either say the correct color or say “I pass”. The second individual was asked “What color hat do you have on?” and he/she says either the correct color or “I pass”. The 3 rd individual is asked the same question – he/she must answer correctly . (1) Which one would say correctly if only the first individual wears black hat? Which one answers correctly if all three are wearing white hat.
If you have the answer Hamid has a nice quality bottle of wine for you!
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
