The Meeting - April 30, 2019

, 2019
The meeting April 30, 2019 , was  opened by President  Greg Herrera , who  is in town to stay for a while, and esteemed member Jane Lampard Haaland, gave the "thought for the day" which was a re-repeat of the "Thought" given by Karen Munsterman two weeks ago and Vince Iosso last week, but is a good one so I guess it bears re-repeating, she added:
"The Journey of a thousand miles begin with one step...."

"Look back and be grateful
Look forward and be hopeful
Look around and be helpful"

MEMBER Jane Lampard earns "Blue Badge"
Jane Lampard Blue Badge Presentation

Be it known to all, that on April 30, 2019, at an official Carmichael Rotary Meeting, Jane Lampard was presented with her new "BLUE BADGE" by President Greg Herrera and mentor Vicky Boatwright.
The criteria for earning the "Bue Badge" (going from neophyte "Red Badge" to "Blue Badge") is below:

Trip to Japan (Part one) Greg Herrera
Trip to Japan
So it came to pass, that we did not have a speaker for our important April 30 meeting. Not to worry because we were treated to Part one of President Greg Herrera's trip to Japan. It is nice to know that this is just Part one and there are many other Parts to come with Greg's many photos in the future. Actually it was a great presentation and  we have Greg's thoughts about his trip in the following remarks:

"Here is a random (or maybe not so random) sampling of the slides presented last night for your review and editing.
Sarah (the spouse) and I were there a little over 2 weeks, to see Japan, learn of its culture and people,  primarily with interest because our son Stephen has been working and living there for over nine months.  We have seen a wonderful transformation take place in our son and wanted to not only see him, but also to learn more of what his enthusiasm about Japan was all about.
I have written a brief mini-introduction….”Japan 2019” as part of a preparation for another audience, and it was a spontaneous presentation last night …. hope folks liked it.
Unfortunately for Carmichael Rotary, I have more slides and commentary that I may pull our of the hat as needed in the future.
What I have provided is a personal statement, Mt Fuji as seen from a Tokyo observation tower, Mt Fuji as seen from the bullet train, cherry blossoms as a “super bloom” in April, young girls in kimonos in the park, me in the hotel provided kimono, a shrine in Kyoto, breakfast scene in the hotel (Japan Times!), typical lunch or dinner ($30.00 US), a sample of weird cafe street food that tastes good with enough sake and beer (yes that's rectum and uterus listed), a Tanuki ( the raccoon dog of Japan), an owl in the owl cafe (real and don’t touch), a bidet, a very common high tech fixture found everywhere- “transformative”), and a real Tanuki (cute).
President Greg"

It seems that Greg was enamored with the Japanese toilets/bidets, he made many references to it in his talk, he said: Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party!(redacted by the Carmichael Bulletin "decency" committee).
Fines/Happy Thoughts and Raffle

HAPPY FINES

V  icky Boatwright was back as  "Happy Thoughts" counselor :
Hamid Ahmadi welcomed  David Thorman, who was back from his hernia surgery which , as David said was more painful than his recent knee surgery; Bill Donnoe announced that he is selling his motorcycle and anyone can bid on it, he said that he has had a bike since he was 15, but now is retiring from Bikedom; Jane Lampard Haaland is flying to Arizona on Friday and asked people to watch Doug Haaland and keep him out of trouble; Bill Baxter has sold his airplane hanger;  Mark Beil is back, looking good, and made it through Tax Season and was helped mightily by his daughter who did most of the work and remotely with his daughter-in-law in Arizona (what a family); Vicky said that she went with her two daughters to Universal Studios in L.A.; Greg Herrera is happy about his talk, part one, and has hundreds of pictures for the next episodes - whenever needed (aren't we lucky!); Stan Roe started a discussion about bidets, which he is thinking of installing; Walter Malhoski bragged about playing 9 holes of golf and doing better than the others in his foursome; Greg Herrera again expanded on the subject of Japanese toilets, he said talked about toilets and we can't repeat what he said;;  Doug Haaland is having a birthday on Friday!

Your bulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
  1. Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under the Birch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
  2. Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’s Treasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
  3. Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
  4. Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odyssey of Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
  5. and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this“On the Fly”: Hobo Literature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, June 26, 2018
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
