♦ BLOOD SOURCE: Chuck McBride wants you to give blood and tell them that you are donating for the Carmichael Club. We are in competition with other Clubs in the District.
► As many of you may know, Dick Bauer had a new knee surgically implanted just one week ago Tuesday. So we were all surprised when Dick showed up with a walker to today’s meeting. He did not spend even one night in the hospital! Amazing! Those with problem knees are very interested in Dick’s progress.
► DICTIONARY PROJECT: Bill Donnoe announced that Dictionaries will be distributed before Christmas.

Dr. Beverly Wesner Hoehn is a successful and eminent musician – harpist who has played with many orchestras and famous people. Today Beverly graciously came to our Club to tell us about the part that Rotary had in her success and to say “THANKS”.
So in the Rotary year of 1977-78, when Beverly was in in college, an opportunity came up. It was the Rotary Club of St. Helena which were looking to send a student (fellowship award) for study abroad. Beverly and her sister both competed for the slot – I guess that they were so impressive that both of them were chosen.
Beverly said that she went to Belgium and studied the harp, attended Rotary meetings – she said that Rotarians helped all along the way – finding a place to stay, renting a harp, and she even met the King of Belgium. She was, in effect, an ambassador of good will from America!
Beverly went on to earn her Bachelor of Music from Pacific Union College, Master’s from USC, and Doctorate in Music from Indiana University.
Beverly played a couple of pieces on her harp and they were wonderful!
It is so wonderful and inspiring to be able to see the fruits of Rotary on young people’s lives by our Rotary fellowship programs. Beverly said that without the help of Rotary in her life, she might not have had such a wonderful career.
Beverly liked the announcement by president-elect Vicky that a book, in her honor, will be dedicated to the Carmichael library (Sacramento Public Library).
*p.s. Beverly grew up in Carmichael and lives in Carmichael.

It was a nice fall day, Sunday, October 14th, mild in temperature, and Karen Munsterman’s troops were there at 9 a.m. preparing lunches – putting condiments in bags and JeffThompson headed up the cooking of hot dogs, and others wrapped them. It is reported that 550 meals were delivered to participants. Another successful and appreciated project was completed.
N ow since Vicky Boatwright was busy being temporary president for the day, we had Bill Donnoe as "Happy Thought" coJunselor.....first a trick was played on Phil Danz, it seems that Phil, while working hard at the Special Olympics project, inadvertently left his jacket at the event. First they brought out a "fake" jacket that he tried on to test Phil's honesty. When he said that it wasn't his, they brought out the "real" jacket and sold it back to him. Phil protested that he is old (80 years), retired and on fixed income - but to no avail, they forced twenty out of him; Mark Biel is happy to say goodbye to the tax year of 2017; Vince Iosso bragged about retrieving Phil's jacket; Stan Roe, Doug Haaland, and Dick Bauer thoroughly enjoyed our guest speaker and Harpist Beverly; ditto Bill Donnoe and Chuck McBride; Vicky Boatwright spent the long weekend in Oregon with family; David Thorman also spent the weekend at Sea Ranch with grand kids.

RAFFLE
THE fact is that we now have over $1000 in the kitty, and now, for the second time in a row Jane Haaland had the winning ticket and would like to win the money by getting the Ace of Spades, but she selected the King of Clubs, Jane got a nice bottle from the Club's secret wine cellar ....Looks like there is only 8-9 cards or so left, so my advice is for you and me to be sure to attend all the next meetings because your chances (and mine) of winning is looking pretty good!
Each year our district says "Thank you" to the clubs and individuals who so generously support our Foundation. Without the selfless donations made by individual Rotarians to support our 6 areas of focus, we could not make the impact in the world we do.
As RI President, Barry Rassin has said, Rotary is a force of nature, constantly shaping the world for the better, something for us to all be proud!
On November 3, I'm excited to share that Rotary International Vice President, John Matthews, will be visiting our district as our keynote speaker at our annual Foundation Awards Dinner! It is rare we have someone who is so beloved and influential come to our district to share in our celebration for those individuals and clubs who keep Rotary in motion by supporting one of the engines that make things happen in Rotary.
This year we will be celebrating and honoring a Rotarian who gave $1M to the foundation last year and we will be entertained by the vocal group 'Auburn Road' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJoVcVvH_V8 as they rise to the top of the country/rock record charts!
There will be Gold Medal winning wine giving out to the best table decorations and our theme this year is 'Holidays Around the World'!
So dress up with the holiday spirit in mind and come to celebrate with YOUR club & district on November 3, 2018.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
