President  David Thorman opened the 40th meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 11th day of May, 2021 and after 50th virtual meeting and the first hybrid "in person" meeting of the year.   As is his custom, he rang the " Official Bell" (and virtually) to start the meeting. The "pledge" was proficiently and seamlessly  conducted by Frank Pease, but his "Thought for the Day", although was profound, I am sure, was garbled in the recording and difficult to hear in the room, so it is forever lost.....

HONORARY
DANA NEWELL, CATHERINE SURVILLAS

Catherine Survillis was welcomed to our first hybrid “in person” meeting for almost all of 2020 and 2021. Catherine is no stranger to our Club because she has given 3 presentations over the last few years. She has the interesting history in that she has been a teacher and lived in Nairobi, Kenya for a number of years. She became very interested in the Kenyan people. She moved to Gold River, but Catherine continued her interest in Africa and became a Tour Guide and while leading tours in Kenya, she came upon the establishment of the Iruri school in Keratina, Kenya. The government gave the school a shell of a building with no floor, roof, or windows. Thanks to Catherine’s persistence and to her Rotary Club (the Rotary Club of Elk Grove and others), funds were donated which allowed a floor for the classrooms, windows, a roof, new bathrooms, and now they even have wi-fi. On top of that, scholarships have been donated to top students which allow them to go to high school (a big deal) and qualify for college! Mark and Terri Urban, Phil and Katha Danz, Dana Newell and David Thorman visited the school in 2019 and gave a report to the Club. What a wonderful trip it was and the children and teachers  were very grateful for our visit. Catherine’s presentation was quite detailed and extensive. I have some screen shots of her slides which better explain about all the wonderful things Rotary has done for the school

HAPPY FINES

So we were in a celebratory mood for those of us who were meeting "in person" hybrid after our long spell of about 50 virtual meetings! So there was a lot of "Bell Ringing" going on and I have just listed there, but from the recording there was no direction as to where the funds should go - I am just going to assume that these were simple "Bell Ringers" with proceeds going to the Club. Troy Drennon RANG THE BELL for the first in person meeting; Chuck McBride, because his granddaughter has been accepted to U.C.D.; by Vince Iosso whose granddaughter belongs to the National Honor Society; Bill Baxter because he hasn't been to a meeting for a long time; followed by Dana Newell who BONGED THE GONG in honor of the kids in Iruri school; Frank Pease gave $25 for the good job Geronimo did with technical details caused by the "hybrid" meeting: Tony Marques  RANG THE BELL for being still young at 83; and Stan Roe gave $25 because after all this time, things at the storage place are still good. FIVE BELL RINGERS and ONE BONG GONGER!

Donations as of 4-1-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (nearing 300), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
