Pinewood Car Race – George Abraham
The club entered the "Carmichael Float" at the District 5180 Pinewood Derby Car Race. The racing committee of Jay Boatwright and George Abraham, after intense deliberations, settled on a design that is distinctly Carmichaelorian and Rotarian. The club wishes to acknowledge Steve Faulkender, owner of SNP Electric and Jay's long time friend, for generously offering the use of his shop and tools to build the car. Jay cut and sanded the pinewood, then polished the wheels and axles for a smooth and fast ride. Steve made cut outs of the Great Wall of Carmichael and glued them to the sides. George raided Michael's Craft Store for the miniature figurines and foliage representing the quintessential Carmichael attractions, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center and the Ancil Hoffman Park and Golf Course. As a final touch, Rotary stickers were placed on the wheels making it literally the car running on Rotary wheels.

President David and George represented the club at the races. The enthusiastic crowd was overheard commenting on the Eco car, the Green car, the Dinosaur..  It clearly stood out from all the other entries but came up short in the speed category, unfortunately. One of the wheels may have been bumped out of alignment. As we are anxiously waiting for the awards to be announced at the District Conference, the Carmichael entry was one of the most creative and best looking car at the 2021 Pinewood Derby. It was certainly exciting to relive the days of Cub Scouts racing Pinewood Derby cars,

It was through the magic of Zoom and the foresight of our programs chair, Katha Danz that we were able to learn about C-Span - all the way from Maryland. Katha introduced our guest speaker for the day, Doug Hemmig, Communications Representative for C-Span and was pleased to tell us that Doug is a Rotarian in the Rockville, Maryland Club and has been with C-Span for 22 years. Doug introduced his side-kick Heath Neiderer, marketing manager. Doug started by showing us two slides (below) about their trip in 2018 all around the U.S. and to Sacramento and visited a Natomas charter school.
C-Span is an anachronym for Cable Satellite Public Affairs Network and was introduced back in 1979 as a purposefully different kind of newscasting, unfiltered and not telling you what to think - just the facts and you make up your own mind. Doug says that in today's
biased climate, we need this more than ever!
C-Span is a non-profit, independent enterprise - supported by no government money but by the cable satellite providers as a public service.

C-Span fully covers the house and senate, congressional hearings, interviews with leaders, confirmation proceedings,  and an audio of the proceedings of the Supreme Court. They also reach down to state levels and the goings on of all 50 states. They are factual, neutral, and trusted as shown below where C-Span comes out ahead of all other news outlets in terms of neutral bias (below)
C-Span has three cable channels, C-1, C-2, and C-3 and are online at c-span.org where there is available, thousands or hours of content.
They have a congressional chronicler which has a page for every member of congress. C-Span has radio apps and podcasts.
They are on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and emails, word for word.
Q and A: It was asked whether C-Span censors anybody. Heath Neiderer said in effect "no", and illustrated their coverage of the recent "take over" of congress on January 6th, 2021. He said that the cameras that have been installed in both the senate and house were functioning, but the audio was cut off. C-Span continued to receive calls from interested viewers, staff at congress and congressional members who were hiding in and around the area - detailing in real time what was happening. Later in the night when congress reconvened, they covered the authentication of the presidential election which went on to about 3 a.m.
President David thanked Doug and Heath for their very informative presentation (who knew, that news can actually be unbiasedly reported!). He could hardly wait to inform them that a book, in their honor, will be donated to the Carmichael Public Library ( subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library)
HAPPY FINES

So it was better than an average day as "Happy Thoughterians" lined up. Vicky Boatwright gave 1A because over the weekend, she went out with daughter Corrine and bought a wedding dress and made other important plans for the wedding; Jim Thompson bragged (as well he should) about turning 91 and said that he has been in Rotary for 64 years, he appropriately BONGED THE GONG and RANG THE BELL for $200, Jay Boatwright also bragged about brewing his first beer since his retirement, it was worth a paltry 1A; Heine Roijker spoke up about his wife Ramouna who had a wedding anniversary of 22 years and wanted to BONG THE GONG - kudos; Frank Pease gave 1A in anticipation of being able to meet "in person" next week; Stan Roe gave a big 1A because he went to L.A. and had a May Day celebration with his younger son.

Donations as of 4-1-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (nearing 300), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
