We had our EIGHTH “virtual” meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club, May 19, 2020. President Vicky Boatwright, recognized esteemed member Ed Bunting who, after performing the "Pledge", gave the "Thought for the Day" as follows:
"At times I wondered, if I had not come a long way
♦ R-E-A-L :These hour-long Saturday online training classes are available for any member to attend, but particularly incoming Rotary Club leadership. These are subjects that are usually offered during the District Assembly. You must register ahead of time, so go to the District website and scroll down to see the links to register for each class individually. (SEE MORE INFO FURTHER DOWN IN THIS BULLETIN)
♦ RI has asked that no in-person meetings take place through the end of this Rotary year (June 30). We will wait for further direction as it is developed by the Rotary Pandemic Task Force.
•Blood is badly needed, stocks are down:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
• Since our meetings are on virtual format, Chuck McBride is frustrated and desperate for money for the Club and our charities. There are two ways you can give to him - send a check to Carmichael Rotary Club, P. O. Box 129, Carmichael, CA 95609 or a better way, is to just let Dick Bauer knowthe amount you want to give and he will greatly delight in putting it on your credit card and designate which charity you want: food bank, club, club foundation, polio+etc.
• How to help during this crisis. Now Rotary is recommending Volunteer Surge. You can train to speak to patients and seniors who are just released from the hospital to see how they are doing. This will relieve nurse personnel during this busy time. D.G. Ray Ward also says that there is a 30 hour training program to become a nurses assistant. More soon.
• Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!
Rev Dr Garry Coxhas retired after 35 years as a Presbyterian pastor. He is married to Robyn Cox (52 years), they have two daughters living in Carmichael, one a computer tech for San Juan school district and the other one is a principal at Carnegie middle school. He has been growing grapes here for the past 5 years he enjoys travel, reading, movies, golf, tennis and making wine.
Garry said that he lives on the corner of the entrance to Ancil Hoffman park and if you go by his house, you will see his vineyards. He started 6 years ago and now has 126 vines producing 600 pounds of grapes each year. He produces only red wines and three varietals : Zinfandel, Barbara, and Tempranillo. Where he lives is in what is called Zone 4 and his vines were brought in from Santa Rosa. Luckily, his family helps him- otherwise he would not be able to care for the grapes himself.
Garry said that in the beginning, it took 3 years to produce 400 to 600 pounds of grapes per year. One big problem is to take care of pests – like turkeys, deer, raccoons, skunks and birds. He has a sound generator that does a pretty good job of keeping pests away. Garry mentioned that the pests are clever and for instance, the deer know just when the grapes are ripe and they show up right at the right time.
In February, each year, he starts the vines for the season, pruning down the old vines. He sprays for mold and mildew, about once a month until harvest time in September. If you want, you can buy grapes from Napa and avoid the bother of growing them and some wine makers do but he doesn’t and at harvest time he elicits the help of friends and family and they crush the grapes and put them in 25 gallon containers and add yeast. Yeast is also just in the air and can be used also for fermentation. In 10 days to two weeks the grapes are again pressed down and when it has the right PH (8.2) and 14% alcohol they take them to the winery where they squeeze out the wine and put in barrels for six months. Then are put in glass carboys, take the remaining leaves out and rack the barrels. The wine is put away for 6 months to 2 years, but Garry says that there is a big temptation to drink the wine early.
In Q and A: Garry said that his vines produce about 150 bottles per year. Also, that in controlling insects, lady bugs do a terrific job. His winery is called “Harmony Vineyards” because he and his family have the goal of living and working in harmony.
President Vicky thanked Garry for his very interesting talk and told him that, in his honor, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library (maybe about wine?).
v icky Boatwright conducted the "Happy Fines" today and lo and behold, Jim Thompson (the Godfather) announced that he just had turned 90 years old and had an anniversary in the Club, so he BONGED THE GONG twice with $100 going to the Carmichael Foundation and $100 going to the Club; Vicky added one allotment (in lieu of dinner, $20) for Jim; Stan Roe followed with one allotment; Katha Danz celebrated finally being able to get her hair done yesterday - 1 allotment; Vinne Iosso gave one A to polio+; Frank Pease gave one A to the food bank also because Mischelle got a new puppy- a Snauzer........

RAFFLE
SO (DOUBLE DITTO DITTO FROM LAST WEEK) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.

Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
