President  David Thorman opened the 34th meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 30th of March, 2021 and the 45th "virtual meeting" overall ( will it ever end?) As is his custom, he rang the " Official Bell" (and virtually) to start the meeting. The "pledge" was performed by esteemed member Rich Plath and he added the following "Thought for the Day"::

YOU CAN GET MORE MONEY,
BUT YOU CANNOT GET MORE TIME"

ANNOUNCEMENTS

► FUND RAISER:  President-elect Dick Bauer's brilliant plan for a Tri Tip Fund Raiser came to fruition on March 27th. 194 fresh dinners were picked up by participants from the Jackson Catering from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and taken to their homes. It turned out to be profitable fund raiser with a gross sales of $5,459.07 and net $3924.49! Below are some pics taken at Dave and Dana's home where friends (12 of them) gathered to eat their dinners

Those who donated, in lieu of or in addition to the dinners, Jack Shearer, Judy and Terry Sweeney, Scott and Lenore Wagaman, Bill Baxter, Karen & Woody Gallagher-Biggs, Jan Frazier, Margaret Gercovich, Maxine Grybis, Peggy Krause Kennedy, John Mangels, Rich Plath and Tom Drennon.
A big "Thank you" to all those who participated in the project!

►OAK PARK ROTARY HOUSE:  As you may know, our Club recently donated $750 to the Oak Park Rotary House. Lynette Andersen came to our Club  (virtually) and told us of the wonderful reason for the house, that is, to give a child who is going through prolonged treatment at Shriner's Hospital, a free place for the family and child to stay. It keeps families (who live far away) together during a very difficult time. Some stays have been for a year or more. It is a wonderful project and we are being asked to help with the upkeep of the house on special "work days". There are 7 other Clubs involved and they share in the maintenance work. Since we are now involved in the project, would you consider spending an hour of so helping with some yard work with other Rotarians? (Breaking news, an 8th Club, Elk Grove has decided to join the consortium as a full sustainable member).                                       See informational story below:
►EASTER SEALS GOLF TOURNAMENT:  Jay Sedlak said that the Easter Seals Carmichael Golf Tournament is slated to be on June 11th, and we will have our “Golf Assembly Meeting” on June 8th,  and wanted to know how many want to participate, $175 for one individual golf cart, prizes, lunch, raffle and 18 holes at Ancil Hoffman. Some have mentioned that if the carts are full, they would like to walk the course
(not me!).

►CARMICHAEL PARK DISTRICT:  Have completed two Bocci Ball courts in their park and word has it, that the Carmichael Park staff is challenging the Carmichael Rotary Club to a match on the courts when it can be safely done (maybe we start practicing A.S.A.P.!)

The Islamic Community in Carmichael
Our speaker, Basim Elkarra, was introduced by Program's Chair Mark Urban who said the he saved one of the best programs for last, since he will have filled his quarterly quota obtaining speakers with this meeting (Great Job!). Mark said that there is a growing Islamic community in Carmichael and we are happy to have Basim, who is Executive Director of the Council on Islamic American Relations (CAIR) for the Sacramento Valley with us today. Basim is a native Californian, born in San Francisco, and went to a number of Catholic Christian schools where he was taught discipline by Irish nuns. He and his family went back to Egypt for a time to learn about Islam and he came back graduating from a private Christian High School. He then went on to graduate from U.C.B. and has been in Sacramento since 2004. Basim has been elected to and spend much time on many local and state boards - too many to mention here. Basim explained that CAIR is an organization that advocates for civil rights, and has an educational outreach about Islam, can be reached by anyone (not just Muslims) and has been around in Sacramento Valley since 2002.

Basim told us a little about the early history of Islam in the U.S.(above left). He said that a good book to read about early history is "Gods Shadow" about Sultan Selim and the Ottoman Empire and the making of the Modern World by Alan Mikhail. Slide (above right) is the racial mix of Muslims in the U.S.
Above (left) showing the yearly trip to Mecca with millions of pilgrims, Basin said they are all dressed alike, rich and poor, in white dress because in the eyes of God, all are equal. Slide right shows the distribution of Muslims around the world, with the largest group by far in the Asia-Pacific area.
Above is Mosque at 4545 College Oak Drive in Sacramento, to the right is the Salam Community Center. Basin said that the Mosque and Center are open to anyone and have many activities and welcoming tours.
Above (left) shows the beautiful ornate designs and Calligraphy in their Mosques. On right there is some good news that a survey shows that people are warming up a little toward Muslims. Islamophobia is a problem that needs to be dealt with for the good of all people.
In Q and A: There were questions about the differences of Muslim countries around the world and many violent acts and tyrannical use of force against various peoples - like the Uyghurs in China. Basim acknowledges that there are many problems, but he believes in the long run, things will get better. We all hope so. You can reach Basim at belkarra@cair.com . President David did his good deed for the day by letting Basim know that a book, in honor of his presentation, will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library)
HAPPY FINES
So the fines were flying out quickly with many of the ever popular 1A's ($20) variety. Like Chuck McBride was the 1st to step up with a 1A; George Abraham gleefully gave 1A because his daughter Tara won the 2nd level Toastmaster's speech contest; Jay Boatwright showed his patriotism to the Oregon Beavers by giving 1A; Geronimo gave 1A because he likes to look at the beautiful fields of grass and flowers at this time of year; Alan Gallaway gave guess what? 1A to tell how Tara beat him out in another Toastmasters speech contest last year; Stan Roe, 1A, something about Michigan vs UCLA; but Heine Rokjer came up with the big bucks $50, because his daughter is having her 27th birthday. Still, the 1As and Heine's $50 add up - $170 for the day to the Club.

Donations as of 4-1-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (nearing 300), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
