The meeting March 12, 2019 , was opened by our President Greg Hererra and he gave the microphone over to Karen Munsterman who gave the "thought for the day":
"Show respect even to people that don’t deserve it;
not as a reflection of their character, but as a reflection of yours."

One may not think about what good a thrift shop can do for the community. Many of us, including me, just pass by the AL, Assistance League Center at 2751 Fulton Ave. in Folsom, but Mickey Mullen (left in above photo) says that what they are about is one of the best kept secrets around. The AL was founded some 50 years ago. Mickey says they help to transform lives and strengthen our community. It is an all volunteer, non-profit organization with 120 chapters across the country with 285 volunteers In the Sacramento chapter alone. You can donate your gifts of clothing, furniture, and other items to them and they help the community and 100% stay in Greater Sacramento. They benefit crises centers and children’s receiving home. Mickey went on to talk about their many programs such as Operation School Bell, Bears, Clothes for Careers, Eyes right (preschool children are examined for amblyopia – lazy eye- which, if not treated can cause blindness in one eye), Fresh Start, Governor’s Mansion History, Kids on the Block, Operation School Bell, Reaching Out, Scholarships and Senior Friendship (yarn ladies using their skills to benefit people in crises). Their projects are outlined in their brochure below and are too numerous to detail in this bulletin. Just to say that Mickey mentioned that Kids on the Block go to schools and talk about “bullying” and their Scholarship program for needy community college students is $1500 and now they can apply again for another $2500.
Now Micky’s compatriot (who also works at the thrift store) Betty Lou Beyer (right in above photo)talked about the gift shop and said that they are known as the Nordstroms of the thrift retail shops. They have purchased their building at 2751 Fulton have partnerships with commercial retail stores, especially with Talbots. Betty passed out coupons in which you get 25% off most everything in the store. There are fabulous finds on Fulton!
You can shop at their store, you can volunteer to work at the store, you can gift items to them, and you can donate to their organization.
President Greg thanked both ladies, Betty and Mickey, for their wonderfully informative presentation and noted that, in saying “thank you” a book in their names will be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library).
V icky Boatwright looked inspired to oversee "Happy Thoughts" today as she has just returned from PETS and was pumped. She gave some for the opportunity and for the Assistance League presentation: Stan Roe gave some in support of the wonderful Crab Feed we had; Ed Bunting stood up AGAIN and allocated a GONG BONGER earmarked for the Assistance League. He is now a BONG GONGER 7 times over!; Walt Malhoski added $ to Ed's; Jay Boatwright announced that he had a PSA test and got a .4 - all the doctors in our group thought that was great!; Terry Sweeney recognized Phil Danz as bulletin editor who silently slaves away taking notes and produces a great bulletin; Vince Iosso gave some for Vicky - returning from PETS, Richard Plath gave in support of the great work the Assistance League does; and Doug Haaland bragged about getting away with Jane to the coast.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
