President  David Thorman opened the 19th "virtual meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 1st of December and the 31st "virtual meeting" overall (when will it end?)  As is his custom, he rang the " Official Bell"  (and virtually) to start the meeting.

The "pledge" was performed by our esteemed Frank Pease, who chose the following "Thought for the Day":

"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
The most certain way to success is
to try just one more time.

HOLIDAY BASKETS Rich Plath
Our program this year is as follows:
1) We will assemble 75 baskets at the Carmichael Water District on Saturday December 12 at 9am.
2) We will deliver the baskets to San Juan School District headquarters right after assembly is complete.
3) District employees will distribute the food that afternoon.
4) The menu changed this year at the request of the school district. Our boxes will include pasta, canned tuna, breakfast food, soups and healthy snack food. Our boxes will be much lighter than in the past.
5) With good turnout on the 12th, we probably can complete the packing in about one hour. Our club will have an opportunity to catch up with each other over coffee and donuts.

POINSETTIAS :
President David was at the distributions of Poinsettias at Evens Kitchen, this morning, December 1st and reports that all went well with members getting their poinsettias and allotment of our Rotary masks.

FUTURE FUND RAISERS: With the advent of COVID, and perhaps that we will not be able to have a Crab Feed, we need some other way to create funds for our projects. Troy Drennon heads up a committee to find possible other fundraisers. He would like 3 ideas from each member. He is still collecting ideas.....

MONARCH BUTTERFLIES There is an article in the October 2020 edition of Rotary Magazine which outlines an international preservation project for the Monarchs by preservation of habitat. This was exactly what our recent Effie Yeaw project was about a few weeks ago. In the article it is suggested that the reader learn more about operationpollination.net and follow three simple steps - 1. Encourage you club to sign a pledge committing to carry out one project to support pollinator habitat. (we've done that) 2. Partner with other organizations and invite them to sign  your pollinator pledge. 3. Share your story on your club and district and with local media. This is a project our Club could take up-a suggestion from your B.E.

President David Thorman opened the new annual meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club for 2020-2021 under the new bylaws incorporated earlier in the year. He had his parliamentarian, Mark Urban (virtually by his side) as he set forth with the meeting.
He asked for various summaries of the 2019-20 Rotary Year. Past President Vicky Boatwright gave a summary of the many remarkable achievements of her year culminating with the advent of the corona virus at the 2/3rd mark (March) which necessitated the beginnings of virtual zoom meetings. In spite of this, it was a very good year, luckily, we did have a successful Crab Feed in February to bring in needed revenue.
Past Treasurer Jay Boatwright said that we went through the 2019-20 year still now with substantial assets of around $20,000 and Stan Roe said that the Club's foundation also is very solvent and even more so because spending is down due to covid and our inability to do some projects. As of now Treasurer Katha Danz said that the amount in the Carmichael Foundation is around $43,000.00. Community Service Director Dick Bauer mentioned that this year we have donated 1000 books to schools and they handed them out 4 to a student at a time, and we had our "hands on" work project planting milk weed and pollination plants at Effie Yeaw Nature Center. Phil Danz made a suggestion that we join the Oak Park Rotary House as a permanent project since it is such a worthwhile project which would encourage fellowship and cooperation between Clubs in doing projects together. On the International service subject Richard Olebe said that the Tororo Water Project has been finalized as complete by Rotary International and now we might think of future projects with the Tororo Club as our sister Club. George Abraham announced that we will have one student that we are sponsoring for RYLA camp. Speech Chair Phil Danz said that the District is planning virtual speech contests this year with Zoom (and we have March 16th as the slated date), he mentioned that raising the prize money might attract more contestants.
A review of our three year plan was produced with our goals - President David went over each goal with members to see how well we did in keeping to our goals. There were goals that were reached and those we did not reach. Some of the reason for the Club's faltering can be laid to the corona virus.

Then President Thorman conducted the most important business of the meeting - the election of officers for the 2021-22 Rotary Year. The slate of candidates are as follows:

PRESIDENTDick BauerINTERNATIONAL SERVICETony Marques
PRESIDENT-ELECTRichard OlebeVOCATIONAL SERVICEFrank Pease
PAST PRESIDENTDavid ThormanCLUB SERVICEHamid Ahmadi
SECRETARYVince IossoCOMMUNITY SERVICEVicky Boatwright
TREASURERJay Boatwright

It was testimony to the quality of the great candidates that the members elected the slate unanimously. Congratulations!

HAPPY FINES

President David Thorman intimated that we should be happy for the successful year we've had in spite of our problems, would we reflect this in our "Happy Fines"? Vicky Boatwright said she is late in giving for her anniversary and birthday so she BONGED THE GONG; The imminently generous Ed Bunting  BONGED THE GONG twice for his 66th birthday on December 12th and in celebration of the memory of  Bill Munsterman; Karen Munsterman BONGED THE GONG in appreciation for Ed's thoughtfulness; Alan Gallaway gave 1A because of the great big game with Stanford beating Cal barely by 1 point in a missed point after a touchdown (they were just lucky); Jay Boatwright gave 1A because his beloved Beavers won also......

Donations as of 12-7-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 10-16-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
