The seventh official meeting of the 2018-2019 Rotary Year was opened by Greg Herrera, who chose esteemed past president Ed Bunting to lead in the "Pledge" and gave the following "Thought for the Day":
Alex Rucker visited our Club and told us of his “Eagle Scout” project to provide a Flag Pole at the Veteran’s Memorial at La Sierra Center in Carmichael. What he needed for part of the project was $406. Immediately members in the Club donated money to our Carmichael Foundation for the project. Great news! The Club exceeded the $406! Great job by our members and Alex for bringing it to us – Makes you proud…..
BARTENDER JACY BRANEN RETIRES
Jacy Branen, who has served us cocktails, wine, beer and food for years at Ancil Hoffman, and who has given us cheerful camaraderie at the bar and was interested in our projects and goings on, is retiring from her job at Ancil Hoffman. She is pursuing a new career (she has recently earned a degree in computer science from Sac State). We will miss her and hope that she will come back from time to time to help in projects or just to fraternize with us. Vince Iosso gave her a small gift from our Club. Good luck Jacy!

Bill and Ann Wittichare Carmichael Club’s friends who have been to visit us many times. Bill has lectured to us about membership before, a subject that he is an expert at, like no other. Bill is presenting his new book "STOP/RECRUITING, START/ATTRACTING".He also has taught us on how to travel, and has been our favorite Assistant Governor (assigned to our Club). Bill has come today to give us a friendly update on membership.
First Bill said: “Don’t look for new members, but attract them – drawing them towards membership.
Two questions are: Why do you want new members? New ideas, Help for your projects, and fellowship.
Why do they want to join us? A survey was made about Reasons to join Rotary and the following results are here in order of importance. 1. Network, 2. Social reasons, 3. Learn something new, 4. Fun!!!, 5. Service.
So, what benefits the new member? 1. To learn what your Club is going to do for them, 2. What benefits do we have to offer, 3. People go shopping – are you welcoming when they come to your Club? 4. Every one has expectations, the trick is to EXCEED their expectations.
So what kind of person do you want to attract? Young people, family oriented people, women in Rotary (now 50% of this nation’s CEOs are women), Boomers, who are now retiring in droves, people with different ethnic backgrounds (ethnic diversity) and retired people.
Bill then told us how he goes about meeting people – in Starbucks (his favorite place) just sitting and talking, talking with your friends, it’s O.K. to invite them to Rotary, join the Chamber of Commerce, in Church, on a board of a non-profit. Go out of your way and pick up prospective member and drive her to a meeting.
President Greg's perspective on Dr. Bill’s presentation is that it was superb and he earned, in his honor, the distinction of donating a book to our local Carmichael Library (part of the Sacramento Library system).

N ow we had a most interesting session with Vicky Boatwright at the helm, and Eagle Scout Alexander Rucker who asked for donations to the "Flag Pole Project". It was decided by popular consensus that ALL proceeds of the day will go into our Carmichael Foundation and will benefit Alex's project up to the $406 he was asking (see story in Announcements in this newsletter). Well Greg Herrera gave some because he isagain happy to be back from Hawaii (imagine that); Walter Malhoski is happy for his current good health; George Abraham gave to the "Flag Pole Project" for all the Veterans who fought and died for our country; Now a whole series of folks stood up to give $$, Ed Bunting; Bill Donnoe; Phil Danz; Jay Boatwright; Tony Marquess; Bill Wittich; Stan Roe BONGED THE GONG; Doug Haaland BONGED THE GONG; so did Vince Iosso. Anyway in total we EXCEEDED the $406 goal!

RAFFLE
THE fact that there is now OVER $900 in the kitty, it would have been great if Alan Gallaway would get the Ace of Spades eventhough he doesn't need it. But, alas, he just got the Jack of Spades and a nice bottle of which he doesn't need either 'cause he doesn't drink......
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
