♦Change of Date - Holiday Party - Good News: David Thorman and Dana Newell will host the Holiday Party but there has been a change in the date for the Christmas Party. December 10 will not work for David and Dana. But have no fear--the date will be FRIDAY, 13TH. Same time, same place. We can't thank DavidThorman and Dana Newell enough for gracious hosting of our annual event.

We have also committed to help with their raffle. Starting tomorrow, I will be collecting gifts (value in the range of $10-20) for their raffle prizes, so please bring unwrapped gifts. This is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade If you would prefer, you may donate cash and we will purchase prizes.
Thanks. - Dick Bauer
p.s. There will be a surprise Santa Claus there!
♦ Holiday Baskets: Rich Plath
It is important that we get an early count of those in our club who will help with home deliveries and bulk deliveries to the district office for further distribution. We will be doing our home deliveries Wednesday morning, December 18. We need help delivering food baskets to the district, also on Wednesday.
Another important part of our food program is helping assemble the food baskets on Monday, December 16 and Tuesday, December 17. We may be needed to help the district further distribute our baskets on Thursday, December 19.
My request is that each member communicate via e-mail or otherwise how he or she will help the week of December 16-19. An important aspect of our program has been our success recruiting family and friends. We would appreciate a tally of these other helpers as well. It is important to our club's reputation that we have good participation and that we fulfill the commitment we make to the school district.
Thank you.

Diagnosed when he was not even a year old, Bob Mutchler understands firsthand how life-altering polio can be. Yet he and his family refused to let the challenges of this debilitating disease affect his future. As an adult Bob combined his membership in Rotary International and his love of motorcycle riding to help with The Rotary Foundation’s commitment to provide polio immunization to children everywhere through a program called PolioPlus. This is the gripping story of a man who knows from his own experiences exactly what a “world without polio” can mean to children and families. Crisscrossing Australia and North America on his motorcycle, “Motorcycle Bob” shares his own personal struggles as he tirelessly dedicates himself to the eradication of polio worldwide.
Our topic of the day is, as noted above, Polio Plus with Bob Mutchler. Affectionately called "Iron Butt Bob" started out with a video. For you who want to see it the link is as follows:
Rather than to go into specifics of what Bob said, the two links (above and below) very accurately describes his tremendous dedication and effort to inform and aid in the world-wide elimination of polio.
I ,your bulletin editor, can only hope and assume that acting President Greg informed Bob that a book has been dedicated, in honor of his presentation) to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library system) - Thanks to Jay Sedlak for taking the notes (in the absence of your bulletin editor).
Foundation Chair Chuck McBride, Guest Bob Mutchler, Past President Greg Herrera
AsChuckems McBride started, Jay Boatwright rang the bell and gong. He celebrated a number of things, his birthday, Vicky's Birthday and I (J.S.) am sorry because I missed some of the reasons; We got a dose of Sparky revelations--via acting president Greg Hererra; Oh and Jay Sedlak--he also had a birthday. One Bell-Ringer and one Bong-Gonger.....
BELL RINGERS
DICK BAUER; MARK BEIL; ED BUNTING (2); VINCE IOSSO; JAY BOATWRIGHT(X3); VICKY BOATWRIGHT; WALTER MALHOSKI (3); TONY MARQUES; CHARLES McBRIDE; KAREN MUNSTERMAN; RICH PLATH; STAN ROE
BONG GONGERS
DICK BAUER; MARK BEIL; JAY BOATWRIGHT; VICKY BOATWRIGHT; ED BUNTING (2) ; GREG HERRERA (3); VINCE IOSSO; STAN ROE; TONY MARQUES; KAREN MUNSTERMAN; RICH PLATH
EXPLANATION: A BELL RINGER IS SOMEONE WHO DONATES $100 TO THE CLUB IN A GIVEN YEAR; A GONG BONGER IS ONE WHO DONATES AN ADDITIONAL $100 TO THE CLUB FOUNDATION (FOR GENERAL OR SPECIFIC PURPOSE)
RAFFLE
JAY BOATWRIGHTIS THE WINNER!Would you believe it. Jay Boatwright, with extra tickets awarded for his bell ringer and gong bonging, won the raffle. And just as fitting, he drew the ACE OF SPADES.! Too bad the pot was not a big as in the past--the exact number is unknown to me at this time. But it is probably in the low 3 figures. But more than pocket change and more than what he just contributed. So it will all work out.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
