THE CARMICHAEL CLUB HAS FOUND A NEW MEETING LOCATION
Beginning Tuesday Jan. 4, 2022 we will be meeting in person at the Stage 76 Kitchen and Bar at 7600 Fair Oaks Blvd., near the Manzanita split, located at the corner of Fair Oaks Blvd  and  Wayside Lane. For those who have been in the Club awhile, we used to meet at this restaurant when it was called the Capri.
We will be served a buffet and the cost will be $25 including tax and tip. Because we must pay for a minimum of 15 guests and because the restaurant needs to know ahead of time how many attendees we will have, we are reverting to the system in use prior to Covid.  All members will be charged $25 a week unless they notify Vicky by 8 Pm the Sunday before the meeting .
I think you will find the food and venue to be excellent.
We will continue to hold hybrid meetings for those members who wish to attend on Zoom;
TIP: The restaurant has a happy hour from 3-6 PM, so if you order your drink before 6 PM you could save a few dollars. Drinks are not included in the meal price.

Getting to Know Her - Kari Bauer

The reason I want to share Pearl Harbor Day is that my parents became engaged in 1941 in the summer and my dad just graduated from Cal and he was in Navy ROTC and, of course, they were called off into the to the Pacific when WW II started, so they had a quick wedding.  It was set up in about 3 weeks.  He headed over to Pearl Harbor. My mother got on the ship and came after him to join him and she arrived in Pearl Harbor the first week in December.  Because he was a newlywed and because December 7th was her 21st birthday, he had shore leave and was off the ship. He lost all his best friends that day and immediately went to the ship.  By the time he got there, it was over. Pearl Harbor Day is something that we always remember with a special emotion in in our family.  I was born at the end of WW II and grew up in a family with a lot of music, a lot of outdoor activities. We had a lot of fun. Ultimately, I went to college and spent my junior year abroad and met this guy in Germany, Dick Bauer and we ended up living on a motorcycle, a BMW 250, for two months.  We had a little bag with all our clothes in them. I think I had very little underwear. I don't know what he had, but those were the days. Ultimately, we got married. He went to medical school and I'll tell you about the Rubins. There was an activist who I believe was also one of the Chicago seven named Jerry Rubin, and I told you we had music in our family and I played Baroque and Renaissance music on copies of old instruments and within a group called the Berkeley Baroque Group was our harpsichordist, named Gil Rubin, who was Jerry’s brother. And then when Dick started medical school, I went over to UCSF and got a job in a laboratory which was the last thing I wanted. However it worked out well because I made $530 a month and wow, that was so much money. But anyway, I worked with a product called bilirubin. Bilirubin is the pigment that builds up in in your skin and If you have jaundice and your liver is failing, that's the orange pigment that you see in that condition and it is very light sensitive. Maybe you have had a family member, a baby, a grandchild, child that has had to go under the bilirubin lamps. It was discovered while I was working there that maybe we could put a lamp on these babies and breakdown the bilirubin because we knew in the lab that it was very sensitive to light. I was actually on the paper where we made C14 bilirubin and injected it into one baby and put him under the lights and measured the products to make sure they were not toxic. That was was kind of special.
We came to Sacramento when Dick was an intern. We had a couple of kids - super kids. They're all grown up now. We have 4 grandchildren. I got antsy and I went back to school and became a cardiac ICU nurse and worked at the Med Center for 11 years. After I retired, I volunteered at the Nature Center doing just about everything from being a docent to sewing for exhibits, and writing articles for the newsletter.  Then, shortly before the pandemic, I became extremely worried about climate change and founded a small group we call ourselves the WOW. Although the name is always subject to change, we've been
meeting for two years now and have been writing postcards and letters, making phone calls and getting out the message every way when we can. Everything we can do combat climate change.
After Kari finished, husband Dick Bauer proudly mentioned also that Kari’s relatives came over on the Mayflower. They actually attended the first Thanksgiving in this country!

THE CARMICHAEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOLIDAY EVENT

Several Carmichael Rotarians gathered together recently to help bring joy to Carmichael Elementary students and family members. We brought Santa and Mrs. Claus (our own Troy Drennon and his darling wife Erin) to listen to each child's wishes, and the rest of the Rotary elves put holiday cookies in festive bags to pass out from our decorated "trunk", one of eight stations along the row of festivities. Our elves also wrapped gifts for display under the tree, passed out books for the students, and offered filled backpacks the school provided.  A good time was had by all!!

Dave and Dana's Christmas Party
So it was on December 14th, 2021 that the Carmichael Club had its annual Christmas Party – thanks to our hosts, Superhero’s Dana Newell and David Thorman. Dana had her home decorated for Christmas up to the “nines” with almost no space to spare. The sparkling repartee of our friends and guests were only matched by the delicious excellent food. Wonderfully succulent trip tip, side dishes ( I especially liked the carrots) and sinfully yummy deserts. It was a super way to celebrate the Christmas season and to get to know each other “in-person” once again (all 28 of us).  Pics above and below:
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Holiday/Christmas Baskets

For the last several years, Del Dayo Elementary school has had a can drive for donations to our Christmas basket program.  They still collected cans this year even though we did not need them for our Christmas baskets.  The Carmichael Rotary Club picked up the several thousand cans that they had collected and delivered them to the San Juan School District Family Resource Center for their food locker.  The Center distributes the food to students and families that are homeless or are temporarily without any food while waiting for benefit programs to begin.  Rich Plath, Dick Bauer, Jay Boatwright, Geronimo ( Greg Herrera), Richard Olebe, and Stan Roe filled a regular caravan of SUVs and a truck and made the delivery on Thursday, December 16.

Also, on Saturday, December 18, the San Juan School District distributed baskets of canned goods and bags of perishable produce to 100 needy families at the district headquarters.  The food was contributed by the Sacramento Food Bank.  Rich Plath, Mark Urban, Richard Olebe, and Stan Roe passed out the food as the families drove by in cars.  Our club also gave $20 gift certificates from Heine Roikjer’s Grocery Outlet store to accompany the food.

AFGHANISTAN - Habib Rahmani
We were pleased today to have an Afghanistan Rotarian, Habib Rahmani, with us, and having firsthand knowledge of the status of his country. Habib has earned a master’s degree in law from Ohio University and has operated as a legal consultant for the  Friends of the Public Private Partnership for Justice Reform in Afghanistan, FPJRA, the Afghanistan Alumni Association and is a member of the Rotary Club of Roseville, California.
Habib started with comments about how he became a Rotarian in Afghanistan. In 2010, he met Jeff Woods in Kabal and was turned on to what could be the benefits of Rotary to the Afghan community. He became the co-founder of the Rotary Club of Herat in 2015. For a few years they worked on beneficial projects and had sister Clubs in the U.S.A. and Europe. Then came the collapse of Afghanistan ( a big unexpected surprise to Habib and he was not alone!) and he lives now in the U.S. Now there is a big deterioration in people’s rights in Afghanistan – particularly women ‘s rights. At this time, many Rotarians have left Afghanistan and those that are left have to very careful in what they do because of the Taliban – especially low level Taliban who are mostly illiterate and punish people harshly who seem to not obeying religious laws.

Habib now turned to the problems faced by the big influx of Afghanistan refugees who have and are entering our country – many are in the Sacramento area. Language is a problem, many especially the older people and parents do not speak English, there are financial issues and cultural ones. Many have problems understanding and adapting to our ways. Habib recommends that Rotary Clubs should help families by adopting one or two families and mentoring them. In this way, they can be helped and more understanding can be transmitted, through them, to the community at large. An interesting idea!

HAPPY THOUGHTS

On the December 7th Meeting,  experienced "Happy Thoughts" conductor Vicky Boatwright assumed her position again, a comfortable one, as leader of extracting Happy Thoughts: Stan Roe was happy that the University of Indiana won the big ten championship in football, so naturally he BONGED THE GONG; George Abraham put in meal money $20 because he visited his Dad in India and luckily got back just before the Omicron virus; Vince Iosso GONGED THE BONG because his son has attained his triple seven international status with Fed-Ex- funds to go to the Jim Thompson Society; Tony Marques celebrated that his son has become Fire Chief and BONGED THE GONG ; Geronimo BONGED THE GONG to go to the Jim Thompson Society because he was just happy to have visited with his son who lives in Japan and the family gathered in Hawaii and he is glad to be back home again.

Donations as of 10-20-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (NEARING 400), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
