THE CARMICHAEL CLUB HAS FOUND A NEW MEETING LOCATION
We meet at the Stage 76 Kitchen and Bar at 7600 Fair Oaks Blvd., near the Manzanita split, located at the corner of Fair Oaks Blvd and Wayside Lane. For those who have been in the Club awhile, we used to meet at this restaurant when it was called the Capri.
FIRE FIGHTER'S AWARD
An award was given by Vocational Service Director Frank Pease (center above) to Carmichael's Fire Station no. 109 for their great service to our community. One of their shifts came to our Rotary meeting on January 4th, 2022 to accept the Award and Captain Jeff Hickman (shaking hands with Frank) said a few words about their Station. The award was inscribed with the "Fireman's Blessing" to bring them good luck.
Getting to Know Her - Dr. Ramouna Roikjer
Ramouna was born in Iran in 1962. Her father was a civil engineer. She left Iran when she was 19 years old. While she lived there, the revolution happened and the hostage crisis, then there was the Iran and Iraq war – a time of turmoil. Everything came to a stand-still and for a year and ½ she did nothing.
Her brother came to the States in 1977 and so she knew somebody here. Ramouna got out of Iran by going to Turkey and then to Spain, where she got a special visitor’s permit to enter the U.S and she landed in Boston, Massachusetts. She went to college on a student visa and studied for 10 years, at Boston University, and Tufts. She earned her D.D.S. degree and went on to specialize as a prosthodontist (1993). Ramouna said that she didn’t want to go back to Iran and so she just kept studying to keep her student visa. After practicing for a few years in the U.S., she had an opportunity to take a position in Saudi Arabia. While in Saudi Arabia, she met Heine Roikjer, they got married, had a child (she now has two children). She really wanted to come back to the States and talked Heine to come along with her (circa 2007) and they settled in California. She has a practice in Fair Oaks (where the roosters abound). Recently she has joined the Carmichael Club and has become an esteemed member.
SACRAMENTO LITERACY FOUNDATION - April Javist
April Javist, is a native of Sacramento, CA, having attended Rancho Cordova High School.. After completing her bachelor’s degree in theater from San Francisco State, April moved to New York city and is a founding volunteer of the All-Stars Talent Show Network – one of the largest after school programs in the country. When she received her MBA in Finance from The F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business, Babson College she decided to turn her professional career toward non-profit management. In 2007, April came back to Sac and took her current position as Executive Director of Sacramento Literacy Foundation which is focused on helping all kids read. During her 15-year tenure, she has come to believe that reading is the top equity skill and mission critical in achieving a true democracy. She has established a track record in raising funds and advocating for children’s Literacy. April likes to golf, walk, and volunteer in the community. She is a member or the Sacramento Rotary Club. is married and has three children.
April gave a detailed PowerPoint presentation about the Sacramento Literacy Movement - a presentation which is near and dear to our hearts as we participate in giving Dictionaries to elementary schools in Carmichael every year. I have just put these slides below as the simplest way to publish April's message. The Foundation needs our support and we have an offer from them to add to our donation to schools project which I believe we will pursue. April makes the point that homes which have books in them have increased literacy - so getting books into families is important. It was sad to show that in our region (Carmichael) reading skills are lower than in Sacramento County writ large. In addition to this bad news, there is a diminishment of 10 to 20 percent due to the COVID-19 shut down of schools in the last two years. The Foundation espouses that literacy be taught in a way that is based on modern science where comprehension is a key element. We had a lively Q and A after the presentation, showing our interest in the subject and very aptly, our President Dick Bauer, announced that, in honor of April's presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

HAPPY THOUGHTS
On the first meeting of the new year, January 4th, 2022, experienced "Happy Thoughts" conductor Vicky Boatwright assumed her position again, a comfortable one, as leader of extracting Happy Thoughts: StanRoe gave one allotment, $20, for the wonderful execution of the Christmas Baskets this year and extolled the contributions of Rich Plath and others in the project; JaySedlak and guest Paul DeGuerre said nice things about the great meeting we had; Mark Beil talked about the wonderful holiday he had with his kids and his dad; Frank Pease gave one hundred big ones ($100) BONGED THE GONG in honor of the great Fire people that came to our meeting; Geronimo RANG THE BELL for the great venue of the evening; Phil Danz gave an allotment happily celebrating that he successfully used the Heimlich Procedure on Tony Marques during the dinner and bragged about it being the second time that he used it successfully; but the contribution that "takes the cake" for absolute generosity was the presenting a $1,000.00 check by Dick Bauer to the Jim Thompson Foundation (JTS) which is part of our Carmichael Rotary Foundation. Dick got to BONG THE GONG ten times! Our greatest member, Jim Thompson, is looking down on us approvingly!

Donations as of 10-20-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman, (2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (NEARING 400), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
