PEACE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION MONTH
The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.”

The Meeting

There are, in this bulletin, two meetings combined as one, February 6 th and the 13th. On the 6th, we had our Speech Contest and some of our old past presidents as guests and the second meeting of February 14th, Jay Sedlak took notes and we know that President Dick Bauer opened the meeting and then gave the mike to the excellent Ed Bunting who accomplished the "Pledge" and "Thought for the Day":

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal.
It is the courage to continue that counts."

Winston Churchill

We had a new comer to the competition for Club Comedian in the person of Doug Haaland and a fine joke it was, but just below the Censor's wrath:

This is the tale of Andrew McTavish... The bonnie Scot Lad

Andrew was walking across the moors one day and after a while he grew tired so he laid down under a tree to take a wee bit of a nap.

While he was laying there two bonnie lassies happened by... and one asked the other "Have aire ya wondered what they wear underneath their kilt" The other said aye, but I've nare had the guts to ask'em.

So the one lifted Andrew's kilt and low and behold he was wearin' nuthin but his Scottish pride.

So the one lass says to the other...give me the blue ribbon from your hair and we'll play a wee bit of a joke on the lad. When she got the blue ribbon she tied it round Andrew's privates and off they scampered across the moor.

By and by Andrew woke up from his nap and noticed somethings arye underneath the kilt. As he lifted his kilt and saw the blue ribbon round his privates he said, "Aye laddie... I don't know where you've been... but I'm proud you took first prize!

For some reason, many of our Past Presidents descended on our Club at our February 6th meeting.
They were welcome of course and got to enjoy our speech contest.

Schedule of Events

He is getting worried. Head Crabber Greg Herrera said that he has sent out the agenda of the Crab Feed and please do not forget wine and beer for our barrels. Phil Danz has said that next week, he will sent 'round a sign up sheet for those who want to donate desserts. Remember, we need at least 30 donated desserts to equal what we made last year.

There was a guest Jordan Powell, a consultant with the American Parkway Association. I am told that he gave a great presentation. Unfortunately I just have some brochures that he left with the Club. They have a website and I am sure that you can get much information from them.

Speech Contest
So even though the Speech Chairman, Phil Danz was not there, the speech contest went on, with Ex-Speech Chairman Jay Boatwright on  the microphone, and Co-chairman George Abraham watching over the paper work, I am told that the contest progressed smoothly.
They had 5 contestants scheduled, but two couldn’t make it – so we just had 3, which still made for an entertaining evening.
The Judges were Shyama Chakroborty, Ed Bunting, and Bill Donnoe – all distinguished gentlemen, and a experienced timekeeper, Chuck McBride and tellers Donna Thorne and Stan Roe, rounded out the staff. There were a couple of Sgt at Arms, who had nothing to do because the crowd was very well mannered and followed the rules.
All three contestants spoke to the Rotary Theme for the Year “Making a Difference” and were excellent. After a close decision by the judges, the winners were announced, Julia Luna, 1st Prize was given $200 , Sarah Freese, 2nd Place, $100 and Elizabeth Rowe, $50.
Jay Boatwright thanked all the participants and especially Teacher Shannon Shope of Victory Christian High School who was in attendance and came with students Julia and Elizabeth. He also announced that Julia, the winner, will be competing at the semi-final contest on Tuesday, March 27th, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., at Riverside School, 2970 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento.
2x2 Troy Drennon and Jay Sedlak

Jay about troy:

Troy Drennon soon will be the ripe old age of 38. He was born on November 3rd – 6 days before my birthday. We are both Scorpio. Wow- Troy has been with our Club for 7 YEARS! Troy married Erin in 2011 – she is from Alberta, Canada. They now have two children – Emily Mae (2013) and James Troy (2016).
Troy was born and raised in Carmichael. Do you remember the American River Hospital? He is 4th generation from Carmichael and both his parents are Sacramentans – Troy went to our famous Del Campo High School
He is a sports fan – Giants, 49ers, and Kings.
Troy started his own business in 2005 from his garage – woodworking – custom kitchen cabinets and other furniture. He earned his living this way until Edward Jones recruited him in 2012 as a financial advisor.
He was introduced to the Carmichael Rotary via Arden Arcade by a collegue from Edward Jones.

Troy speaks about Jay

James “Jay” Arthur Sedlak was born in Chicago, IL on 11-9-1951. His first great job was with Hertz rent a truck in downtown Chicago. It was a fun job. Next, was in the retirement planning business when FRISA Rules came out in effect in 1-1-1976 – protecting retirement plans – a big change in the industry.
After his moms passing in 1976, Jay moved to California with his bride Susan and her two twin girls. He came out to be closer to his mentor and uncle Hal, who was in the insurance business.
One main reason for his move, the winter of 1979 in Chicago, recorded 100” of snow, Sacramento had 0!
When Jay and Susan moved to California, the twin girls were 11, and they ended up going to El Camino High School, one lives in Sacramento and the other in Oklahoma.
Jay worked for Farmers Insurance from 1987-2000. He retired from the insurance industry with Powell and Associates in 2005 to help take care of Susan, who worked for AT&T on Watt Avenue. She ended up passing in 2007.
Jay was first  in Rotary in Carmichael in 1986 helping out with the aftermath of the flood. He became friends with Rich Shipp, but was not a full time member of the Carmichael Rotary Club until 2005.
For fun Jay would love to play golf but a bad back has slowed hin down. He likes helping out with the Club Golf Tournament and other projects.
Jay is a huge Cubs fan and can recite the starting line up from 1969, including starting pitchers. His favorite Cub’s player was short stop Earnie Banks.
Fun fact: If you like pizza and you’re in Chicago – check out Ginn’s “East on Superior off Michigan”
The things Jay and I have in common: We are both Scorpio’s, we love baseball and pizza, and we work in the finance industry.
Jay has always been super to me and I look forward to going out to lunch with him for no other reason than to just hang out. He owes me a lunch.

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of October, 2017, we have purchased over 120 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
