JANUARY, 2023
Rotary Awareness Month

President Richard Olebe opened the meeting of January 17 of 2023 at the Carmichael Elks Club. The leadership of the Club showed it's remarkable adaptive ability by changing venues hours before the meeting. Our reservation at the Old Spaghetti Factor was cancelled - so we pivoted and met at the Elks Club instead. Thus "cool guy" Richard nonchalantly presented the "Pledge", "the Four-Way Test", and the "Thought for the Day" .

MR. PICKLE, A LOCAL TREASURE!

Vocational Chairman Frank Pease (above left) has presented JR Raissi (above right) owner of the Carmichael Mr. Pickle restaurant,
with our award for outstanding service to the community.

JR Raissi has been a Carmichael resident for 40 years and has owned and operated the popular Mr. Pickles sandwich shop for 20 years. In addition to being an important part of our business community, he has been involved in community service in a number of important areas. Much of his work in this area has provided support to Carmichael youth and beyond. In addition to hiring local teens to work in this business, he has been active for fundraising for the Carmichael library and several schools. He has also contributed to the success of our own Rotary auctions. JR. has one son and two daughters. His wife is an aesthetician. We are pleased to honor someone who so exemplifies our goals of superior performance in business paired with active volunteerism to contribute to Carmichael's broader needs.

A TOUCH OF UNDERSTANDING

It was our pleasure to welcome Roxanne Snyder (left above) and Meghan Adamski, who came to talk about "A Touch of Understanding" which is a 26 year old organization that teaches students and others about what it is like to be handicapped. This small organization (8 people) travel around the wider Sacramento area to schools and create awareness about the handicapped. They are having a special event on March 23, 2023. During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Greg Freeman, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
gregfreeman@saclibrary.org

Over the past eight years, nearly 500 books have been donated to the Carmichael Public Library. We show only the latest donated books with the names of the Guest Speakers.
