The official eighth meeting of the 2018-2019 Rotary Year was opened by President Greg Herrera, who chose himselfto lead the "Pledge" and gave his original "Thought ", that:
"MANKIND SHOULD BE CHANGED TO HUMANKIND"
( I assume this term would recognize both "man" and "woman" )
♦ UGANDAN WATER PROJECT: RICHARD OLEBE is back from Uganda and, although besieged with jet lag, did come to our September 4th meeting and report to us that the water project is going along well and in fact is slated to be completed on October 5th (earlier than last predicted). Richard, as we all know, has been doing a great job at amazing personal sacrifice and will again go back to Uganda in a few weeks. Richard thanked the Club for our unwavering support which, he said, made the project possible.
♦ BLOOD SOURCE: CHUCK McBRIDE said that as past Foundation Chair, he wanted your money, now he wants your BLOOD! Please donate a pint to Blood Source and credit our account ( Carmichael Rotary) so we can win the blood donation competition.

Mark Meuser, who is a candidate for Secretary of State was introduced by Doug Haaland.Doug said that Mark was a very enterprising young man who worked many hard jobs and actually purchased his own Pizza restaurant at age 21. He studied Law, became an attorney and established his own firm. Mark won a major suit against United Air Lines and has represented disabled veterans.
Mark has completed a marathon bike ride all over California (riding 100 miles a day) campaigning ( a length of over 5000 miles).
Mark is a well-known election attorney and will speak today on the topic of California elections and election law.
Mark started his talk with a story about the California legislative election when Benecia was the Capitol for a year or so from 1853-1854. In this case, a Mr. Carpenter stole the election. There was a vote in Oakland where there were 500 registered voters, but 800 ballots were counted. Late in the day of the election some 300 ballots were cast – all in the same handwriting. The legislature would have to hold another election in 10 days – which was expensive and Mr. Carpenter’s opponent also was guilty of fraud – but it was decided that his opponent won the election.
There will always be people who want to manipulate elections.
As an election attorney, Mark was involved in the assessment of the outcome of the Bush/Gore election in 2000 and also in 2016 when in Michigan and elsewhere, the election of Donald Trump was disputed but there was no evidence that any election machine was hacked or that Russia changed a single vote.
Mark would take his place behind the scenes of election polling places and watch over the tallying process and has high regard for the integrity of elections officials. Mark’s goal is to fight for the integrity of elections.
Our President Greg, said that he voted to have a book, in honor of Mark’s presentation, be donated to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library system).
N ow Vicky Boatwright assumed her position as "Happy Thought Counselor" ; Walter Malhoski said something about Greg Herrera needed money to play golf in Pennsylvania? It seems that Greg's email (in Club Runner) has been hacked and some of us are getting spurious emails asking for money -so don't give any money to Greg; Doug Haaland expressed his appreciation for Mark Meuser's visit to our Club; Stan Roe thanked the great Richard Olebe for all he has done and welcomed him back into the Club; Mark Beil put some $ in the Club to help pay for Greg's golfing tour in Pennsylvania; somehow Jay Boatwright and Mark Beil got invited to dinner somewhere? - (I guess they are bragging); Dick Bauer welcomed his good friend and neighbor Richard back; and Richard actually put in some money - thanking the Club again for the Ugandan Water Project.

THE fact that we are now closing in $1000 in the kitty, and that I wouldn't suppose that Stan Roe wouldn't appreciate winning the money and getting the Ace of Spades, but, alas, he just got the 7 of Spades and a nice bottle from the Club's secret wine cellar ....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
