UPCOMING PROGRAMS
February 15: Discover, Sponsor, and Encourage Speakers - Lois Creamer
February 22: Carmichael Improvement District - Rebecca Evans
Getting to know him - Phil Danz
Phil, me, I showed a slide show which pretty much summed up my life story. I especially wanted everyone to know that I am related the great Ludwig Mueller Uri, who was the inventor of the German method of creating glass eyes for humans in the 1830s (he was making eyes for dolls). I showed this irrefutably by comparing my brother Willie's nose to that of Ludwig
THE ACCORDION - ALAN GALLAWAY
First invented in Berlin in 1822. An accordion was patented in Vienna by Damien in 1829. In 1844 Englishman Charles Whetstone combined both treble and bass. Called a concertina. Became very popular fast. Improvements continued to be made until the accordion resembled the accordion of today. There were two types, piano and button accordion. Still are. Known 19th century players of the accordion are Charles Dickens and Mark Twain.
The accordion spread through Europe and Russia, and of course emigrated to the US. Many of the top accordionists in the US were of Italian descent. Lawrence Welk, Myron Floren head a list that you might know. Then there was Pietro and Guido Deiro,Charles Magnante, whose arrangements I still play. Peitro Frosine, and Dick Contino, who I saw perform in Sacramento in the 60’s.
The accordion was probably most popular in the 50’s and 60’s. Dick Contino from Fresno was on the Ed Sullivan show around 40 times. But then it became less popular and reached a low point in the 90’s. That’s when all the jokes came out, perfect pitch, optimistic accordionist, and terrorist. Haunted accordion.
Who plays the accordion now. Sanjee Kupta on CNN, Tom Izzo MI state basketball coach. And of course me. Among women there is Natali Tena, from Game of Thrones, and Christina Hendricks from Mad Men. The best accordionist on the horizon is a guy named Michael Bridge from Toronto. Accordion seems to be most popular now in Brazil.
About the Accordion 2 types, button and piano. 120 bass, 41 keys, plus bellows. Most versatile instrument. Portable, good for singalongs, Boogie Woogie, Rock and Roll, country western, jazz, folk dancing, classical, pop songs, and many other genres.
My interest. Started in 5th grade. Parents weren’t too excited about it, but finally took me to lessons at Nerodne. On 28th and I. Kept playing and parents bought me a $700 accordion. Met Mike Marrotta and ended up with this accordion, an excelsior. Made in a small Italian village Castelfidardo. Parents sent me to Italy to study the accordion after I graduated from college. I learned more Italian than I did accordion. If I have a specialty it’s Italian songs. I played off and on through the mid eighties. Then I pretty much hung it up. I started playing again regularly for the last half year. I’m not as good as I was at my peak, though I’m not sure when that was. So I thought I’d play excerpts of songs from nine different countries.
Alan then played excerpts from at least 7 songs from throughout the world - ending with "Sweet Caroline" from Neil Diamond and we all enjoyed ourselves by "singing along". (Reported by Jay Sedlak)

One important item - bottle of white wine to Katha Danz
she seems to win every time! Thank you.
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Greg Freeman, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
gregfreeman@saclibrary.org
Over the past eight years, nearly 500 books have been donated to the Carmichael Public Library. We show only the latest donated books with the names of the Guest Speakers.
