The third official meeting of the 2018-2019 Rotary Year was opened by the "ringing of the bell" by President Greg Herrera. .It seems that the despicable, deplorable person who snatched the bell last week surreptitiously returned it before the meeting. The "pledge" and "Thought" was given by esteemed bulletin editor Phil Danz:
""ALLOW YOUR PASSION TO BECOME YOUR PURPOSE AND
ONE DAY IT WILL BECOME YOUR PROFESSION"
GUESTS
SARAH BERNAL (SPEAKER) AND RAY WARD, ASSISTANT GOVERNOR
THE REDDING FIRES - District Governor Jack Arney - Wednesday, August 1, 2018
Yesterday I sent out an email to everyone regarding what our district can do to best and most effectively help those victims in Redding and the outlying areas. I am outlining three options below for your consideration to address things now and in the future.
1. Donations: After several phone calls, yesterday with my fellow Governors, our RI Director John Matthews and the Salvation Army Major Ivan Wild; District 5160 & District 5130 (who have been affected as well in Mendocino and Lake counties) have determined that establishing funds for donations that will be given directly to an organization on the ground, we worked with previously, serving the victims of the fires in both districts was the most effective option for us.
The 5 Area Redding clubs have organized to create a fund as has District 5130 (North Bay). The local relief organization assisted them in last years fires in the North Bay and 100% of the funds go directly to the needs of the victims from those in the fight to make things better. Our donations will help provide the resources they need to be able to quickly respond to victims needs and where best to apply it. Things like gift cards, gas cards, etc. are indispensable during these times.
I humbly ask an encourage each of you to consider a donation of any size to our District 5180 Wildfire Relief Fund to help those affected by these terrible fires.
You can send checks to:

Please note that it is for Fire Victims in the memo.

Sara Bernal was a social worker in San Francisco. She was dissatisfied and got a job on a farm in Penryn , got interested in urban farming and obtained some grants and found her passion. She is now the West Sacramento Urban Farm Manager for the Center for Land Based Learning. Sarah said that there is a need for farm workers and farm work is viable technical work. Urban farms are growing in number and one can get into a 5 year mentorship to become a competent farm worker. Sarah talked about 5 locations that she has been involved with has gotten grants to establish the farms. The proceeds from these farms can be sold to the school district, Raley's, and farmer's markets. Their grants have come from institutions like Wells Fargo Bank and they have found 800 volunteers to work the farms;. The West Sacramento Urban Plan Program is a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization.Their mission is to inspire, educate, and cultivate future generations of farmers, agricultural leaders and natural resource stewards
Sounds like a win-win-win with support for the next generation of farmers, stimulating small business growth, revitalizing vacant lots into highly productive spaces producing 35,000 pounds of food per month and with 1,000 pounds going to food banks, more going to 3 school districts, Nuggets, Raley's, and food stands and having volunteers to run the food farms and learn farming. You can learn more by going to landbasedlearning.org .
President Herrera impressed Sarah with our promise to donate a book in honor of her presentation to the Carmichael library.

RAFFLE
THE fact that there is now over $800 in the kitty, it would have been great if Jane Lampard would get the Ace of Spades. She just got the 3 of Diamonds and a nice bottle of wine from the Carmichael wine celler!
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
