The eighth important meeting of the 2019-2020 Rotary Year was opened by President Vicky Boatwrighton August 27th, 2019The "thought for the day"was given by esteemed member George Abraham:
Rotary Leadership Institute is designed to help newer members learn more about Rotary and members who want to develop more leadership skills (new 3-part class for newer ones interested in learning more about Rotary and/or if you’re interested in a leadership role in the future). This course is all day, including lunch, and has a $25 fee. Sign up on the Rotary District 5180 website.
Levels1 & 2 are Sat, Sept 14 at the Citrus Heights City Hall.
Level 3 will be in Oct during the District Conference in Reno (guessing they will repeat it for those who didn’t attend the conference).
Rotary District 5180 Conference is Oct 25-27 at the Peppermill in Reno. It is on your club calendar. Sign up soon, and book your hotel room at a reduced rate! We’d like a GREAT TURNOUT from our club so we can have lots of FUN together! Go to the district 5180 website (www.rotary5180.org) and scroll down on the page just a little and there’s a link for Escape to Rotaryville.
Rotary International Convention next June (6-10) is in Honolulu. It’s on your club calendar and you can register at www.RIconvention.org.

Themeeting was headed up by Membership Chair David Thorman, who mentioned that, a few days before, there had been an important meeting of many in the leadership shaping a three year plan for the future. David gave a comprehensive slide show for the membership and afterwards asked for a vote of support for the project. The committee came up with specific goals and points of interest, very detailed and I have decided to incorporate his slides into this newsletter in the hope that as time goes by, we can reflect back on them and see how we are doing.
Just so you know the "culprits in crime" that were there at the meeting, they are listed in the first slide:
After some discussion of the above goals, the Club , as a whole, gave their approval of the 2019-2022 plan. Good job to all and if we are dedicated enough, we will achieve all of them!
And actually, David was informed, but not altogether surprised, that, as President Vicky noted, a book has been dedicated in his name to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) The book donation program was started when David was president and now upwards of 200 books have been donated.

SOnow the "Happy Thought" session was placed before the speaker. "Happy Thoughts" were spoken eloquently and some money collected but somehow the Bulletin Editor's notes did not reflect these wonderful comments. My opinion is that the fines should occur after the speaker because it allows more time in case the myriad of "Happy Thoughts" go into more lengthy abundance - in other words - less time constraints.

Karen Munsterman is no stranger to getting the winning ticket (not like your Bulletin Editor who has never gotten it for years). Anyway she drew the winning ticket and was entitled to draw a card but it was only the 2 of Clubs.
It really didn't matter much because there is only 3 or 4 bucks in the kitty. I also did NOT see again a bottle of wine change hands!

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
