The 16th meeting of the 2019-2020 Rotary Year was opened by President Vicky Boatwrighton November 5th, 2019The "words of wisdom" for the day were given by our esteemed member Greg Herrera and he put it up for all to see:
♦ Holiday Party - Good News: David Thorman and Dana Newell WILLhost the Holiday Christmas Party at their home on December 10th - a big thank you to you guys !
♦ The puzzle conjured up by Professor Hamid at the "36 Handles" party was further explained at our November 5th meeting. This was because no one could figure out the answer - So Hamid explained further the puzzle by using "dummies", or better, examples who were real human beings. He placed mock black and white hats on them in illustration of the puzzle.
Still, nobody could solve the puzzle. It seems that Dick Bauer came closest so Hamid did open his prize bottle of wine and gave Dick a glass (for his effort). Your bulletin editor got a glass of wine because he was sitting near Hamid as did one or two others. My idea is to never solve the puzzle and Hamid can bring a bottle of wine each week and we can drink it!
♦ Pancake breakfast at Carmichael Elementary School, Dec. 7th:
We have committed to assist the Carmichael Elementary School with their annual Christmas Party.the morning of Dec. 7. At tomorrows meeting, I will pass around a sign up sheet to help with cooking their pancake breakfast.
We have also committed to help with their raffle. Starting tomorrow, I will be collecting gifts (value in the range of $10-20) for their raffle prizes, so please bring unwrapped gifts. This is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade If you would prefer, you may donate cash and we will purchase prizes.
Thanks. - Dick Bauer
p.s. There will be a surprise Santa Claus there!
♦ Holiday Baskets: Rich Plath
It is important that we get an early count of those in our club who will help with home deliveries and bulk deliveries to the district office for further distribution. We will be doing our home deliveries Wednesday morning, December 18. We need help delivering food baskets to the district, also on Wednesday.
Another important part of our food program is helping assemble the food baskets on Monday, December 16 and Tuesday, December 17. We may be needed to help the district further distribute our baskets on Thursday, December 19.
My request is that each member communicate via e-mail or otherwise how he or she will help the week of December 16-19. An important aspect of our program has been our success recruiting family and friends. We would appreciate a tally of these other helpers as well. It is important to our club's reputation that we have good participation and that we fulfill the commitment we make to the school district.
Thank you.

Our Foundation Chair Chuck McBride introduced P.D.G Glenn Fong. He said that Glenn is a member of the Rotary Club of Roseville and served as president in 2008-2009. His classification is real estate and Glenn is a real estate broker for residential and commercial properties. Glenn is the 2020 Chair for the Rotary Zone 26 & 27 Institute in San Diego. Glenn is a Paul Harris Society member and Major Donor. He has been on international service projects to Rosario, Mexico – delivering a firetruck and to Sao Paulo, Brazil – delivering water filters to the Favelas.
Glenn is a Sacramento native, attended local schools and college and was the seventh child out of eight. He enjoys playing golf and softball in the district softball league. Glenn is happily married to his wife Elise (25years), Lives in Roseville, and has two daughters, Sarah and Katy. They spend frequent trips to Disney Parks.
We are all aware of the tremendous good works that Rotary does around the world and in our communities. As a matter of fact, the organization Charity Navigator which rates Charities has given Rotary International 100 points out of 100 and a four-star rating.
Glenn complimented us on our Uganda Water Project and showed that our project is way up there with the best water projects in the District. He gave a slide show along with his talk.
He said that substantial money that is donated to R.I. comes back to the District and can be used for grants. We know this from our Ugandan Water Project. Glenn said that the endowment fund has 466.5 million in assets and 804.9 million in commitments for a total of 1.21 billion as of June 30th, 2018. The goal is to increase this amount to 2.025 billion by 2025.
Glenn then went into the many ways you can give to the Rotary International Foundation – cash, a will, trust, from a 401K or even the Club can give. You can become a Paul Harris Fellow by donating $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. You can be a member of the Paul Harris Society by donating $1000 per year, Major Donors are cumulative 10 K and up (at different levels), Bequest Society 10 K and up (get different pins and gifts), Arch Klumph Society with cumulative donation of $250 K, Legacy level with 1 million or more promised to the endowment fund.
Also Glenn mentioned whatChuckhas talked about that you can use accumulated points. 1,000 points equals a Paul Harris Fellow recognition – you can use your points to recognize others.
Glenn ended his informative presentation with the thought that the District exists to serve the Clubs and Club members.
So now President Vicky served up a fact – to Glenn, that a book, in honor of his presentation, will be dedicated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library system)

Carmichael Rotary club members recently refurbished the Kids Hang Out after-school program rooms at the La Sierra Community Center complex. With the help of a Rotary District Grant, we gave the Carmichael Park District over $7,000 for new furnishings and storage shelving, along with paint and paint supplies, to spruce up the 2 rooms that are occupied by approximately 60 school-aged children after school each day. Our club members spent several hours on Saturday and Sunday, Nov 2 & 3, painting walls and the floor in both rooms and assembling shelving units. It has been an amazing transformation, changing the drab walls and mis-matched furnishings into bright new surroundings and efficient, kid-friendly furnishings. Pics below: (Text by Vicky Boatwright)
By your Bulletin Editor's count, there were 13 Rotarians and three others (including Director Matt Tremmling) Big thanks goes to Chairman Dick Bauer!
Wewere very happy to see Julia Luna and her mother Alicia at our November 5th meeting. As you know Julia was our Club "Speech Contest" winner in 2018 and went on to win the semi-final there and go on to the District Conference. Now she has embarked on a new laudable mission - to help save our oceans from plastic bags. She has written a letter and started an organization - it is below:

Ed Bunting got the winning ticket and he was happy even though he didn't get the prize,
he just got the 8 of Diamonds. It didn't matter because there is hardly any money in the kitty anyway.
I think he did get a bottle of wine from somewhere.....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
