PAST President  Vicky Boatwright opened the 12th "virtual meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year  in replacement of President David Thorman who was attending a memorial service in Texas. She did not have the big official bell to ring, but made up for it with a tiny less impressive one which she rang enthusiastically.

The "pledge" was performed by our esteemed member Alan Gallaway and guess what, he also gave the following thought for the day which, for some reason, he thought was appropriate for our times:

"It is Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

♦  "IN PERSON" MEETINGS:  President David, had the idea that we could have a partial "in person" meeting at Mark Beil's backyard. The date is set for October 27th (out doors and with proper Corona Virus restrictions). We could have up to 20 persons. Thank you Mark for your generosity. David is, at this moment, working on the details...

DONATIONS TO POLIO+ - During the month of October, ALL donations to Polio+ will be matched by the District- so it's double the money for Polio+

EFFIE YEAW PROJECT -  Habit Restoration will occur on Saturday, November 14 at 9:00 am and about 14 people have signed up to help- so says Dick Bauer. He will contact each person about the event.

♦ Club Historian - Vince Iosso has old Club pictures to donate to the Club and newly volunteered Club Historian Troy Drennon will take the pictures from Vince. (I, your B.E. only hope that an identification can be attached to each photo so that we can place a "History's Corner" Column in the bulletin, and be proud of and remember our Club's past achievements.)

♦ World Food Day: October 16th,  Rotarians have been asked to help out in a "Rise Against Hunger" project (as we did a few weeks ago and it was great fun). Vicky Boatwright sent a letter to each of you. You will have to sign up yourselves shifts -12pm, 4pm, 6pm.

DEMYSTIFICATION OF CLIMATE CHANGE
Margaret Loehr has been a high school science teacher with degrees in science and public health. She has recently collaborated with her son Jeffrey in writing a book entitled "Demystifying Climate Change". Margaret has been in a study group with Kari Bauer (wife of member Dick Bauer) where they have taken up the challenge of climate change. We are very fortunate to have her as our speaker today - (Intro by George Abraham).
Margaret started a slide show that was very well organized and understandable for anyone, perhaps being a teacher for many years allowed her to do this. In her first slide she showed a picture of our atmosphere from space, and the thin line of our atmosphere (six miles deep) which amounts to about the thickness of a layer of shellac on an average desk globe. Since the industrial revolution we have been using the atmosphere as an open sewer, which is not our fault since we really did know of the side effects of our progress in our standard of living - we are not evil!
Margaret put out three categories to be covered: "What is the Science", Isn't it just natural cycles/variations?, haven't we always had climate catastrophes ?  Almost all scientists agree that carbon dioxide holds warmth in the atmosphere. Humans are adding amounts of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, beyond what the natural cycles can remove. It is accumulating. As a result the atmosphere and the planet are warming. Again with wonderful slides and graphs, Margaret made her points (too many to put in this bulletin), I was impressed with the picture (left). Margaret said of herself that she never met a graph she didn't like. She put up a slide going through the last 800,000 years where the earth has been slowly warming but the temperature is up dramatically since the industrial revolution. No other natural warming event can adequately account for this amount of warming except the precipitative rise in carbon dioxide, not solar activity, astronomic activity or even volcanic eruptions. In the good old days, like in the Cretaceous period, things were warmer, but not conducive to living as mammals or humans, but good for dinosaurs. She put up a chart showing that hurricanes, mudslides, fires, droughts are not becoming more frequent but are more powerful and doing much more damage. Margaret predicted that if carbon dioxide levels continue to rise at the high rate we have seen, it might not effect us so much, but increasingly our children and perhaps our children's children or grandchildren. Life may not be destroyed on earth, perhaps the lizards will prosper and enjoy the change. Margaret  said that Climate Change is not a political issue, but an environmental issue. The job of politicians is to fix it. Our job is to make sure they do.
Acting President Vicky pleasantly surprised Margaret by telling her that, in honor of her lecture, a book will be dedicated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library).
*this was actually a double virtual newsletter because Bulletin Editor Phil Danz was on a Zoom session seminar for our upcoming Speech Contest at the same time slot. He couldn't do two things at once, but the notes were taken from the recording of the Carmichael Rotary Meeting....

HAPPY FINES

One always likes a bargain, and Rotarians are no exception, because when it was announced that the District would  double the amount of any donation made to Polio+ during the month of October - it initiated a landslide: Vicky Boatwright, Chuck McBride, Troy Drennon , Vinne Iosso, Frank Pease, Stan Roe, Dick Bauer, and Mark Urban ALL pledged 1 allotment each ($20) to Polio+. Oh, and for our excellent speaker for the day, Margaret Loehr. By my calculation $160 translates in $320.00 for Polio+.

Donations as of 8-22-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 8-4-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
