Fair Oaks FUNraiser Flyer is below. Maggie Hoy and Victoria Porter came to our January 25th meeting to offer how to make money in their Super Bowl pool and help their Club fund 3 RYLA students - some of our members contributed and picked spots on their squares.

Some of our Club, namely Phil Danz, Richard Olebe and Walter Malhoski, attended the very informative Club Runner forum on Wednesday January 26th. The topic was how to utilize the Club's web site. Look to see a better website in the near future!

GETTING TO KNOW HER - Katha Danz
In 1940, a horrific snowstorm blew into Mass.  My mother was in Norwood hospital awaiting my arrival.   The hospital staff had to walk in snow up to their arm pits to arrive at work. Then at 12:21am on Feb 3rd.  I arrived. It was discovered after giving birth to me that my mother required surgery for appendicitis.  Therefore, she stay’s and I go where?  Where else but to Nana’s big house.
In the confusion one thing was overlooked.  My name.
Well 30 days later it was off to the church to baptized me and the big question was what are they going to call me other than the baby.  Nana asked, well what do you want to call her?  My mother said, well, you can name her Nancy or Susan or I really want to call her Katharine, Nana, as that is your name.  Well, there were 4 granddaughters’ ahead of me, (two were my sisters and two were my cousins) and she never allowed any of them to be called Katharine.  When they returned from the church, my mother asked what was my name?  Nana replied “Katharine”. I won!
For ten years, I lived in the town of Walpole in a large home that my father had built for us.  It was a typical Dutch Colonial.  My father was a contractor, and the winter months were hard on his profession.  His sisters and brother had moved to California.  The weather in California was great for his work.  In March of 1950 my father moved to San Jose to work.  In June of 1950 the rest of the family flew to S. F on United Airlines.

United had a photo of us in the Boston Globe as an ad (you can see it above, I am the one in the middle).  We arrived in San Jose and moved into a tract house that my uncle owned.  That was a shock as we were used to the town forests and open land.
In 1952 I had an accident to my eye that caused me to become a patient of the Danz Family.  I was referred to Phil’s father in S.F.  During the years I went on to meet his older brother Ted.  In 1974 ,  I went through a divorce and I moved back to San Jose as I had been living in the central valley.
Phil was seeing patients in the San Jose office.  Well guess what, his lucky day was about to happen!
Yes, we met, and history changed from there. We were married in June of 1975.  We have been a team ever since and this June, 47 yrs.
We worked together traveling around the Bay Area.  We would spend Mondays in Sacramento, Tuesdays and Thursdays in Oakland, San Jose on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Once a month we would fly to L.A. to work in the L.A. office that his mother (also an ocularist and fitted contact lenses) was running. It was a busy schedule, but we were young, and we could keep up the pace. But soon we were getting older and knew we had to make some changes.  We sold off Oakland and San Jose and made Sacramento our main location.  Many people thought we had retired.  My answer to that was no, we are working in one location like many other normal people.
Between Phil and I we have 5 grown daughters and 11 grandchildren.
Phil will be giving his talk at another time (next week) and have more info for you. (The rest of the story!)

The Sacramento Regional Community Foundation

Linda Beech Cutler was named CEO of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation in March 2013. Prior to joining the Foundation, She had a long experience with non-profits. Linda was honored as a Woman Who Means Business by the Sacramento Business Journal and as a Top 100 Business Leader by Sacramento Magazine.

Linda presented a comprehensive slide show (via Zoom) about the Sacramento Regional Community Foundation. It is a well-funded Foundation incorporated in 1983 with assets of over 200 million dollars. It offers an easy way to donate to the charity of your choice by opening a fund with the Foundation. The Foundation has a list of charitable funds that you can donate to and one category is non-profits charities – like Rotary. There is a flexibility in that you can change charities at any time. The minimum giving to establish a fund is $10,000. You can give now or give later, perhaps in your estate and control every aspect of it. So what the Foundation is offering is Ease, Confidence, Flexibility, Resources and Satisfaction – all in one place. As is stated in their website: “Generosity is their only business.”
