TRANSITION MONTH
AS THE ROTARY WORLD TURNS

 President  Dick Bauer was finally back at the helm and opened the 3rd Rotary meeting of the 2021-2022 year. As suddenly as he walked to the podium, "poof" and the missing Rotary bell miraculously appeared, wrapped up like  a Christmas present, as if some hidden  power was rewarding him for his appearance (after missing the last meeting!).

P.P. David Thorman gave the pledge and read the 4 Way test and produced the following

statement as his "Thought for the Day":

I've learned that people will forget what you said;
people will forget what you did;
but people will not forget how you make them feel

Note from Vicky Boatwright
Hi everyone!

First, I want to apologize for sending out the June invoices so late and forgetting to charge for the demotion dinners.  I will be adding demotion dinners to the July invoices since I've already closed out the June invoices.

Second, recall that we have an opportunity to cook breakfast (on the grill we donated to them) for the upcoming Carmichael Elementary Meet & Greet.  They only need a few of our members to help, so the first 4 people who reply to this email will have the opportunity to help!  It's scheduled for 8:30-9:45 am on Tues, 8/10.

And lastly, we have an opportunity to join with others to help with Effie Yeaw's Habitat Restoration native planting project to dig holes, install cages, mulch and plant native plants on Saturday, Nov. 6.  Let me know if you're interested!

Cheers,
Vicky

Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA)
Today we had an enjoyable guest speaker, our most recent RYLA student, Katie Brzozowski. She was introduced by next-door neighbor and our esteemed member, Jay Boatwright. He said that Katie and family had moved in next door about a year ago - so that when the opportunity to send a student to RYLA camp came up, they thought of Katie and asked her for an application. Now the rest is history and Katie has completed RYLA and has come to our Club to tell us about her experiences. Katie gave us a nice slide show of her week at Camp.
Katie said that she went to the Camp with no expectations but found that it was a strenuous week - go,go, going all the time. She wrote down on a rock what she wanted to accomplish - to be able to take chances and to accept her vulnerability. Students formed groups and Katie's was named Chip, Chip Monks - C squared. They each kept journals of what went on. They were challenged by "Mind Olympics", and they came up with a head band and a Chip Monk's costume and had a good time. On Wednesday they had a "ropes course". One challenge was to leap out in mid air and touch an object, it took a lot of trust - a real "leap of faith". They had the experience of greeting younger kids and helping them with things, and the last night wrote about what they learned - so Katie wrote: I will not let people judge me and give attribute to herself as "I am me". At night they would enjoy songs, put on theater dramas - fun. At RYLA camp, Katie found some wonderful, interesting friends and after their shared experience, met for a good time together. What Katie says she brought home from Camp was more confidence, realizing the power of people connections and you don't have to be the loudest to be a leader. President Dick gave Katie a gift, a Rotary Token medal and said that in honor of her talk, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library). Pictures below:

HAPPY THOUGHTS

 President Dick Bauer asked for "Happy Thoughts" -Walter Malhoski BONGED THE GONG for the excellent speaker today and because his son purchased a home in South Lake Tahoe and gave us the polish word zyzie?? zyc pelnia zycia ? - to live life in full; George Abraham put a secret amount in the "bucket" for Katie's great talk; Mark Beil BONGED THE GONG because his dad sold his home to his grandson, so the family home will go on for another generation; Ramouna Roikjer BONGED THE GONG because her daughter has been admitted to San Francisco State University (SFSU) - congratulations; David Thorman BONGED THE GONG because he survived COVID-19, being infected after having the vaccine; Vince Iosso RANG THE BELL because he is flying out this weekend, moving to Madison, Wisconsin, he will miss us and we will miss him (what a good long-standing Rotarian he has been) but he will remain a member of our Club and will fly back now and then for visits and Rotary events; Tony Marques RANG THE BELL because he has been married 66 years, Jeff Thompson  gave $20 saying that our speaker, Katie, shows the value of supporting RYLA. Vicky Boatwright gave $20 also in honor of Katie's speech.

RAFFLE

So we had a raffle today and I'm told that there is $350 in the kitty (BIG DEAL) . Mark Beil was lucky enough to have the winning ticket, but did not draw the Ace of Spades. So, he got the consolation prize of a bottle of wine, Mark seemed satisfied with his winnings.

Donations as of 6-15-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
