Donna Fleshman , District 5180 RYE Chairperson, started her talk by saying that in March of this year, because of COVID-19 restrictions, the Rotary Youth Exchange Program (RYE) had children stranded all over the world. It was a nightmare and it took 3-4 months to get everyone back home.
Now they are exploring ways to keep RYE alive in this dormant stage where there is no traveling permitted – to keep the Clubs involved in their program, they decided to go "virtual". Ordinarily there are three categories of students: Those that are ready to go out (out-bounders), those who are out, and those coming back who are called “rebounders”. Those who were ready to go out have had their dreams dashed for what was going to be the September 2020 program. Donna presented a fairly short but comprehensive slide show that explains the new RYE program that I (thanks to Donna and Zoom recording) have produced below.

President David pleasantly surprised Donna by saying that, in honor of her presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library), Donna approvingly said "Great, I like books". More information on the RYE program can be gotten by clicking on "read more" on the right hand (bottom) part of this article. Donna can be reached at donna.r.fleshman@gmail.com .

It was only the 2nd “in person” event of the Club since last March when COVID-19 restrictions were proclaimed. Our objective was to arrange, assemble and deliver to the San Juan School District Headquarters, 75 apple boxes laden with various types of foods, such as pasta, soups, many snacks, packaged dinners such as mac and cheese, vegetables and canned fruit. These food items were destined to go to needy families in the San Juan District area. We met at the Water Tower warehouse in Carmichael and after about 1 & ½ to 2 hours we finished the packing and loaded them in the back storage areas of numerous SUVs and drove and delivered them to the San Juan District Headquarters at 3738 Walnut Ave. Rich Plath smoothly orchestrated all of the some 17 volunteers which participated in the project. So again we accomplished our Christmas/Holiday project which, for the Carmichael Rotary Club goes back (every year without fail) since the 1960s and before. Kudos to our Club!

HAPPY FINES

President David Thorman again listened  patiently in hopes of the Club having some "HAPPY FINES" (which help keep our Club solvent and fund our many charities) on this last meeting of the year 2020. He didn't have to wait long before esteemed member, Hamid Ahmadi immediately BONGED THE GONG in appreciation of being a member of the Club; Karen Munsterman gave 1A ($20) in appreciation of seeing everyone (if just on the computer); Troy Drennon RANG THE BELL for the year 2020, it was tough but it made him stronger; Heine Rorkjer RANG THE BELL because he and his wife, Ramouna are considering joining our Club as members; Walter Malhoski gave 1A because he got to talk to Shyama Chakroborty recently and he is doing fine and his daughter, a nurse, will get the COVID-19 vaccine at the end of the month; Stan Roe gave 1A for the great work all did in filling 78 food baskets and taking them over to be put in tents at the San Juan School District head quarters on Walnut; and Katha Danz gave 1A because she just had work done in her back yard and it has made her happy.......

Donations as of 12-7-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 10-16-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
