NO CRAB FEED THIS YEAR!

The Board has unanimously decided to not have the Crab Feed Fundraiser this year. One of the main reasons for their decision is the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. It takes a lot of planning, up front cost, and manpower to put on an event like this and they decided not to risk it. President Bauer asked for ideas on another type of  interim fundraiser. Please contact him...

POLIO+ SOCIETY: Why not join for $100 a year and get recognized with a pin at our meeting on October 26th. Mail in your flyer to Tom Cicchini.

We have an opportunity to join with others to help with Effie Yeaw's Habitat Restoration native planting
project to dig holes, install cages, mulch and plant native plants on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Vicky Boatwright sent 'round a sign-up sheet - it will be a nice, easy, and rewarding couple of hours.
Let her know if you are interested..

UP-COMIMG SPEAKERS/EVENTS

Getting to Know Him - Jay Boatwright
Jay was born in Salem, Oregon in 1956, the day Eisenhower was re-elected president. Dad was a WW 2 vet and a heavy equipment operator. His mom was a homemaker, and he had two sisters, one who became a journalist and another works in probation.  Jay is unusual in that he grew up in one house -his parents did not move during his formative years. He had many jobs as a youth, a paper route, pump jockey (at a gasoline station),  and waterfront instructor at a Boy Scout camp. He is an Eagle Scout, and Scuba Certified, and in 1978 received his pilot’s license. He went to Oregon State University, was a student government Senator and met his wife, Vicky, at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco where they both worked. They got married and moved to Sacramento. He went to work in commercial construction in the real estate industry and as an engineer for pipeline rehabilitation company. The last 19 years, he worked for Sequoia Pacific Builders and retired last year after being president of the company for 8 years. He ran for city council of Arden Arcade. Daughter Sarah lives in LA and works in IT for a celebrity law firm and daughter Corrine lives in Lake County and works in the special-ed department for the school district. He joined the Carmichael Rotary Club in 1984, being sponsored by Ed Guinee,, and inducted with Dennis Moffit . He was inducted as president in 1989, the same year that Jim Thompson was district governor. He enjoys brewing beer although time is short right now as he and Vicky are Chairpersons  of this year’s district conference. His retirement intention is to travel a lot.

Toastmasters - Alan Gallaway
Alan Gallaway is a Toastmaster International member and a member of the Skillbuilder's Club (as well as Rotary.) He said that the First TI club was in Santa Ana. It’s grown to 300000 in 149 countries whereas RI has 1.2 M in over 200 countries. Club size in TI is smaller like 10-20 members per club while RI largest club is OKC with 615 members.
TI has a fairly rigid agenda starting with pledge and thought, joke, and educational minute. Then Table Topics, consisting of members being called on to speak 1-2 minutes on a topic or question from the Table Topics Master. This is followed by a General Evaluator who, after calling on evaluators for the speeches, evaluates the meeting in general.

Cindy Harris gave an “Ice breaker” speech, telling us about herself and the first speech she gave at Toastmasters. It was awesome!

Then Anne Sandler, a longtime member of TI, with the designation of DTM, Distinguished Toastmaster, gave an excellent speech on how Toastmasters changed her life.

HAPPY THOUGHTS

A presenting of the Happy Thoughts ensued:
Happy Fines: Upfront and center, Mark Beil mentioned that his father is in assisted living and he cherishes the time they have together – and he was a Toastmaster! ; Dick Bauer put some money in the pot because he was happy to sit and converse with the two lady representatives from the District; Vicky Boatwright was happy with husband Jay’s presentation; George Abraham was happy that his daughter Tara joined the meeting on Zoom; Stan Roe’s daughter is having her home redone and so is staying with him (with two kids and a dog) for a while, Stan got to take his grandson for a job interview at “Escape Room”; Karen Munsterman put in some money in the pot because of a mistake over long time member Duane Labar’s birthday which is in January – anyway, he phoned and they spent some enjoyable times about “old times” with Rotary; Walter Malhoski traveled to Maine and had beer and great lobster and proudly showed a picture of the meal.

The normally lucky Stan Roe was the lucky enough to have the winning ticket but did not draw the Ace of Spades. So, he got the consolation prize of a bottle of red wine. As we know, Stan likes red wine.

Donations as of 9-14-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
