ANNOUNCEMENTS

♦ NEW PRESIDENT-ELECT: CONGRATULATIONS TO P.P. DICK BAUER who has agreed to become our new President-Elect for next year 2021-2. He did a great job last time as President, so we know he will make a better president this time! Thank you Dick !

♦  "IN PERSON" MEETINGS:  President David, had the idea that we could have a partial "in person" meeting at Mark Beil's backyard. The date is set for October 27th (out doors and with proper Corona Virus restrictions). We could have up to 20 persons. Thank you Mark for your generosity. David is, at this moment, working on the details...

DONATIONS TO POLIO+ - During the month of October, ALL donations to Polio+ will be matched by the District- so it's double the money for Polio+, AND will be doubled again by the Bill Gates Foundation. Wow!

EFFIE YEAW PROJECT -  Habit Restoration will occur on Saturday, November 14 at 9:00 am and about 14 people have signed up to help- so says Dick Bauer. He will contact each person about the event.

♦ Club Historian - Vince Iosso has old Club pictures to donate to the Club and newly volunteered Club Historian Troy Drennon will take the pictures from Vince. (I, your B.E. only hope that an identification can be attached to each photo so that we can place a "History's Corner" Column in the bulletin, and be proud of and remember our Club's past achievements.)

World Food Day: Friday, October 16th,  Rotarians have been asked to help out in a "Rise Against Hunger" project (as we did a few weeks ago and it was great fun). Vicky Boatwright sent a letter to each of you. You will have to sign up yourselves shifts -12pm, 4pm, 6pm., Don't forget to bring your phone or camera and take pictures for the Club newsletter.

♦ SUNSHINE REPORT : All Active and Honorary Members:
I am sorry to tell you that one of our honorary members, Don Benson, was in a bad car accident in Arizona and has a traumatic brain injury. He will need help the rest of his life.
Don is a long time Rotarian. He is best known now for his work taking pictures at our golf tournament.
Our thoughts go out to him and his family.  David Thorman

CLEAN AIR, GONE FOREVER
Rod Malloy as you may recall, gave a lecture to us about two months back, August 11th, to be exact. We are  honored to have him back again (virtually) to expand on his original topic "Future Breath" with "Clean Air, Gone Forever". We gave him then, I think, a very thorough introduction and as I can not think of a way to better it, it is reproduced below. I must say that if you want to be impressed by a great video that he produced to celebrate the 100 year of the founding of the Jackson, Michigan Rotary Club, click on link below as it is outstanding:
With roots in Connecticut and New York, Rod has guided non-profit organizations across the United States, raising over $50 million on behalf of aging adults, at-risk children and seniors, human trafficking victims, homeless veterans and nature conservation and environmental protection causes.
Rod embraces the leadership roles he has been entrusted with at N&R Publications and the Sacramento News & Review; providing storytelling, marketing, branding and publicity for environmental, human services and non-profit causes nationwide.
A professional public speaker, Rod produced a 100 year-anniversary video for the Rotary Club of Jackson, Michigan view at:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PGK2v6uU4g He inspires audiences on topics ranging from natural and local history to future reality, with special emphasis on aging adult services, inter-generational trends, social media, civic leadership, local art, the climate crisis, and the environment.
Like most of us, Rod has been living an isolated life during the pandemic. The good things about it is that he has written and recorded three a cappella songs and has expanded his victory garden with beets for the fall (very healthy). Rod also was impressed that Governor Newsom took action to address climate change with several important executive orders:

It is very easy to get air quality information for the Sacramento Region, and Rod produced a slide about air quality information. You can go to sparetheair.com and go to their home page and learn about wildfires, or you can sign up on your phone or tablet or desktop. And there is a light blue button (upper right) that can register you for updates.
Ozone is caused by vehicles, most of it by large cars and trucks. Rod says that health risks are highest where people live near overpasses and near Freeways. Ground level ozone reaches it's highest levels during the afternoon and evening hours. High levels are most often during the summer months. It is a strong irritant that can cause constriction of the airways forcing the respiratory system to work harder to get oxygen. It can aggravate respiratory diseases such as emphysema, bronchitis and asthma, wheezing, chest pain, dry throat, headache or nausea, and reduce resistance to infections.

Then there is particulate matter such as soot, smoke, metals, nitrates, sulfates, dust and tire rubber, and it can form in a gas caused by reactions with nitrogen oxide. The smallness of particles can bypass the body's natural defenses potentially affecting both your lungs and your heart.
And, there is the check before you burn law from November to February. You can check the Air Quality website as to whether you are permitted to burn wood in your fireplace.
Rod said that because of Covid-19 with the lower driving rates of cars and trucks, the air quality has gotten better. It is recommended to drive less and walk more and use electric vehicles.

2020 is the year of air quality oddities, COVID-19 sheltering in place and working from home results in short term clean air. Wildfires created short-term serious hazardous air in most of California. In recent years we have had 5-10 Spare the Air Days in Sacramento due to the Sacramento basin stale air and extreme high temperatures in summer months. Spare the Air Days peaked with 20 in 2018 from June to September. This year we have had only one Spare the Air Day due to reduced vehicle usage.

There ensued a lively Q and A in which charcoal or gas grills were discussed, along with gasoline lawn maintenance equipment, electric trains and buses. Rod said that the restriction in new car sales to 0-emmision vehicles in California by 2035 will help the improvement of air quality.

President David affirmed to Speaker Rod that for the second time, a book, in his honor, will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library)

Donations as of 10-15-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 10-16-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
