FEBRUARY 2021

President  David Thorman opened the 27th meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 9th of February, 2021 and the 38th "virtual meeting" overall ( will it ever end?) As is his custom, he rang the " Official Bell"  (and virtually) to start the meeting.  The "pledge" was performed by  President David because the designated "Thought for the Day" person did not show. However, I, Phil Danz, exercising my prerogative as a powerful bulletin editor , added my own thought for the day:

“When you tear out a man’s tongue, you are not proving him a liar,
your only telling the world that you fear what he might say.”

It really was our pleasure to have State Senator Jim Nielson with us at our Rotary Club meeting, along with his Chief of Staff, Rob Olmstead to give us a legislative update. Jim is an old time Californian born in Fresno and who attended Cal State Fresno, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and successful rancher and businessman. Jim was most recently elected to the State Senate in 2013, but has a long experience in politics as a State Senator (1978) and was appointed Chair of the Prison’s Commission, and many important committees such as budget and joint committee on rules. His jurisdiction includes Carmichael. He lives in Tehama, California and has two daughters, three sons, and three grandchildren.

Jim thanked us for inviting him to speak and introduced his Chief of Staff Rob Olmstead who made some additional remarks as Jim spoke. Jim said that, as we all know, these are challenging times at the Capitol – it’s like there is nobody there, because of COVID-19 and there are many problems to deal with. Right now there is the EDD problem which has put the department in chaos. Then there is the vaccine to get out and the crime situation, and the school situation. Jim hopes to get the children back to the classroom. The isolation causes children to become unstable from lack of socialization. Jim is concerned but hopeful. Jim mentioned that EDD has grown to be bureaucratically ossified and it’s problems are not unique but the magnitude is big! The problem with vaccines is the availability of supplies. Hard to get vaccines out to the rural and  some suburban areas. Jim said that the problem with crime is serious, more serious than most people realize. People are not prosecuted and criminals are let out of prison. Sentences are shortened and drug addicts go free and have no incentive to enter drug programs that are not mandatory. Jim said that lately people have been calling into their offices and in tears just because they finally had a human being to talk to them – and their problem is with the government, not other issues. He said that one of the most rewarding things that he and his staff do, is to help somebody with the bureaucratic government.
In the Q and A, some interesting subjects came up like the fact that we are going to lose an assembly district this year due to decreased population. Instead of “California here I come” it’s “California here I go”. One thousand people a day are leaving. Rob Olmstead said that it looks like 2 districts in Southern California are to be exterminated. Jim says that California needs to be made business friendly again, by getting rid of and not increasing regulations.
President David informed Jim that, in honor of his presentation, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library. Jim said that as a freshman legislator he put together a California Library Foundation plan which has stood for many years – he loves libraries!
Jim’s Roseville office is located at 2200 A Douglas Blvd., suite 100, Roseville, CA 95661 – Phone (916) 772-0571 - If you are having any problems with getting the vaccine or other government problems, give him a call....

MYSTERY HISTORY CORNER
Looks like a Young Jay Boatwright (middle) photo left and photo right Jay next to my old Club (Foothill-Highlands) District Governor, Tommy Neuman. Inscription on cake reads "Fair Oaks Club" "On the start of your 45th Year of Rotary from the Fair Oaks Club." Apparently this is when we used to have joint meetings with our mother Club, Fair Oaks.
Left to right: Bert Betagna, Joe Svilich, Robert "Bob" Slobe, John Utting.
Phil: Thank You too! I was scratching my head on Bob.  PS:  We had some  very interesting guys in our Club back then.  Several members of our Club like John Utting were highly decorated  combat vet’s from WWII. Utting fought the Japanese in those S. Pacific island campaigns. He fought hand to hand in the trenches of New Guinea against the Japanese. He never expected to return. John was a very close friend of mine and shared many interesting stories. -Bill Baxter.  Note P.DG. Steve Lemmon identified Bob Slobe as the District Governor with the hat - I assume that John was president from 1970-71(back of photo).
HAPPY FINES
President David Thorman  was desperate for a "Happy Thought" and one did occur:

It was Chuck McBride who BONGED THE GONG for polio+ in celebration that he has survived a colonoscopy! Who can blame him?

Donations as of 2-14-2021

During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (nearing 300), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
