Kids helping Kids

KIDS HELPING KIDS

You may remember that Bella Lopez presented to our Club as a RYLA student with Sara Freese a couple of weeks ago. Now we learn that she is also an 18 year old CEO of an amazing and unique (501c3) organization consisting of about 100 junior and senior high school students in the Sacramento area that help kids in many ways. Bella started with a very nice video about her organization.
She said that they will put on a great College Bound classic golf tournament at the Serrano Country Club on May 21st. Go to http://kidshelpingkidssac.org to register for the tournament. They put on other events such as an Annual Gala and Sac’s Got Talent.
Their members volunteer at school, helping other kids and giving students an opportunity to give to the community. Some of their activities are raising money for helping low income families with pediatric cancer (recently reaching 40 K), on Mondays they go to elementary schools and support arts or gardening, give 15% of their revenue to Managua, Nicaragua for the funding of special needs, and they help kids develop skills and learn accountability.
Bella said that she, as a former RYLA student and Interact member is interested in helping these Rotary programs going in the future.
The Kids Helping Kids organization started in 2002 in Santa Barbara and was founded in Carmichael in 2012.
It goes without saying, as Bella knows, that a book will be dedicated, in her name to the Carmichael library.

Mark Urban & Rich Plath - 2x2
2x2  Rich & Mark
Rich Plath (left) and Mark Urban (right) BEST BUDS!

Mark Urban talks about Rich Plath:

Rich Plath is a very unassuming person.  But he is a person of significant achievement.
Born in March 1950.  Grew up in a small town, Danville, in rural Contra Costa County.  Was on offensive and defensive linemen for a very good San Ramon High School football team.
Graduated from UC Berkeley in 1972 with a degree in Business Administration. In the late 1970s, Rich got a job in the financial planning department of Natomas Company in San Francisco.  Natomas Company originally started in Sacramento during the Gold Rush Era, and had had extensive land holdings in this area.
In 1980, Natomas Company decided to develop the last of its land holdings, which became the Gold River project.  In 1981, Rich moved to Sacramento to work on that project and became the land development project manager.  He was responsible for securing the many permit approvals and for the physical development of the residential and commercial lots that comprise Gold River.  Rich is very modest about his work on Gold River.  But it is obvious that managing a project of that size and complexity requires, among other things, exceptional organizational and diplomatic skills.
After the Gold River project effort, Rich became a residential real estate broker with Lyons Real Estate.  A short time thereafter, Rich’s friend, Bill Baxter, invited him to join Carmichael Rotary.  Rich has served as club president and has been active in the club for more than 20 years.  Rich retired from the real estate business in 2012
Rich lives in Fair Oaks with his wife, Debby, who is a retired RN.  He has two daughters, a stepdaughter, and five grandchildren.  Rich and his wife enjoy visiting their children and grandchildren in the Bay Area, Ohio, and New York City.  They have also enjoyed travelling to several countries in Europe, especially Italy.
Rich’s is a passionate fly fisherman.  Most often, he fishes in the American River and Yuba River.  He has also fished in Mexico, Oregon, Alaska, Nevada, Montana, and Idaho.

Rich Plath talks about Mark Urban:

Mark is a native California who grew up in the LA area. He earned an undergraduate degree from UCLA with distinction as a Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude. He graduated from UCLA in the top 10% of his class and was a Law Review editor.
Mark worked on Jerry Brown’s campaign in 1974 and later on his transition team.
This work was the beginning of a distinguished career for the State of California. Mark served the California Energy Commission as Deputy General Counsel and served in the California Energy Commission as Deputy Attorney General.  He had varied assignments and argued before the California State Supreme Court and the US Supreme court. He received the Attorney General’s office as Deputy Attorney General. He had varied assignments and argued before the California State Supreme Court and the US Supreme Court. He received the Attorney General’s Award for Excellence in 1990 and 1999.
Mark has served his community as a member of the Carmichael Planning Council, and the boards of Effie Yeaw.  He has served his religion on the board of the Jewish Community Relations Council and the board of the Mosaic Law Congregation. He is a volunteer small claims court judge.
Mark is an accomplished viola player performing with the Camellia Symphony, Davis Musical Theater Orchestra and the CSUS Camerata Capistrano Baroque Ensemble.
Married in 1977, he has three daughters, a lawyer, Danielle, who was a recent speaker to our Club, a science educator and physical therapist.
Mark has traveled extensively throughout the world. I am told he has great material for a Rotary program. In addition to covering much of Europe, other travels include Israel, North American and many countries in southeast Asia, southern Africa, and South America.

Fines/Happy Thoughts & Raffle

HAPPY FINES

N ow Vicky Boatwright was all ears, waiting for the "Happy Confessions" of the members. Phil Danz gave a small amount in celebration of the approval of R.I. to our Ugandan water project, there ensued also a discussion about birthdays, such as Greg Herrera has a birthday on April 20th and so does Phil only Phil will be 80 (God willing) and Greg will be 70. Now a bunch of people owned up that they will be 80 in April - non other that Alan Gallaway, and Tony Marques, and shortly also - the big 80 will happen to David Thorman, Troy Drennon was happy to give some because of the great "Kids Helping Kids" program, Bill Baxter got back to the subject of Alan's 80 birthday; somehow Tyler Jennings got gave for some reason as did Doug Haaland commenting on a Margaret Thatcher quote......

RAFFLE

Sooner or later, it was inevitable that David Thorman
would have the winning ticket, but, alas, he didn't draw the winning card.
We don't know which card it was, but that's all right because being almost 80 - we can forgive him for forgetting. I do remember that he got a nice bottle of dry white wine, perhaps from the phantom donor.

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of April 10, 2017, we have purchased nearly 150 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
