The Board has unanimously decided to not have the Crab Feed Fundraiser this year. One of the main reasons for their decision is the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. It takes a lot of planning, up front cost, and manpower to put on an event like this and they decided not to risk it. President Bauer asked for ideas on another type of interim fundraiser. Please contact him...

Dick Bauer - "Getting to know him"
Dick said that his father’s grandmother came over from Germany and her brother fought at Gettysburg and was appointed by President Grant to Governor of the Washington Territory. Dick was born in (Rome, Georgia) where his father was stationed during WW2.
After the war, the family returned to Illinois and Dick grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. His father was a Psychiatric Social Worker. In 1957 they moved to where his father taught on the UC Berkeley faculty. In 1965, while a student at UC Berkeley Dick attended the Education Abroad Program in Germany, where he met his wife, Kari. They traveled during the 2 month semester break throughout Europe on a BMW motorcycle. Dick attended UCSF medical school and did his internship and residency at UCD in internal medicine. Stan Roe was also an intern at UCD at that time. Dick worked at Kaiser for over 30 years, then, after failing retirement he went to work part time at the Sacramento county jail. It was an eye-opening experience. After spending his career learning to listen and trust what his patients said, he learned that not everyone's word can be trusted. After fully retiring in 2015 Dick joined Rotary, looking to give back to the community (and now is twice President of the Carmichael Club) and it has been very rewarding.
AEROJET CONTAMINATION THREATINING THE CITY OF CARMICHAEL
President Bauer introduced Alexander MacDonald of the State Water Board. He is one of the specialists conducting the clean up of the plum of toxic materials that have been threatening Carmichael's water supply. Alex gave a very detailed analysis of the problems posed by the contamination and his efforts to contain and eradicate them.
Alex went through many technical details about the decontamination effort to keep clean water for Carmichael since promulgating treatments from 2011 to this day.
Suffice to say that the water now used by Carmichael residents is safer than drinking a commercial beer!
The effort is continuing and kudos to the State Water Board for the cleaning up of water from Aerojet. Below are some graphics about the plums and their containment.
President Bauer informed Alex that a book will be donated, in his honor (perhaps about water!) to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library) in recognition of his very informative presentation.

CARMICHAEL MEETING OF AUGUUST 31ST
There was a hybrid meeting on Tuesday, August 31st and it was conducted by President Dick Bauer. Due to my inability to hear the Zoom part and other glitches, I have just published excerpts from the two speakers at the meeting:
Tara Abraham – topic “Zooming through College”.
In Tara's own words: “I spoke about my experiences of zooming through college last year. These experiences included taking classes on zoom, testing over zoom and my favorite class- social justice journalism . I also discussed the lack of community that I felt taking online classes, but fortunately UC Davis had many clubs also go online. I ended the speech by saying that although zooming through college was memorable, I hope we aren’t forced into a similar situation again.”
Alan Gallaway: “Highlights of my Life”
Born at Sutter General Hospital – downtown
Traces lineage back to 1642
Attended Stanford on a athletic scholarship – tennis

Got into the real estate business and then to insurance
In 1963 started learning to fly
Been married 3 times (the last one stuck) and he has 5 grandsons
Specialized in insuring aircraft for many years.
Played tennis and was rated no. 3 in California for 55 and older
Bought a yacht and traveled down the coast to Panama and beyond.

Quit Rotary for a while and rejoined in 2006 and again was president in 2008-9

Donations as of 9-14-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman, (2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
