We had our ELEVENTH “virtual” meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club, June 9, 2020. President Vicky Boatwright, recognized esteemed member Phil Danz who, after performing the "Pledge", gave the excellent "Thought for the Day" as follows:
HONORARY
GUY GALANTE
♦ Blood is badly needed, stocks are down:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
♦ Since our meetings are on virtual format, Chuck McBride is frustrated and desperate for money for the Club and our charities. There are two ways you can give to him - send a check to Carmichael Rotary Club, P. O. Box 129, Carmichael, CA 95609 or a better way, is to just let Dick Bauer knowthe amount you want to give and with great delight he will put it on your credit card and designate which charity you want: food bank, club, club foundation, polio+etc.
♦ Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!

COEXISTENCE WITH COYOTES - GUY GALANTE
Guy Galante is a credentialed teacher, youth education director with a master’s degree in Recreational Administration. He is certified U.C. Naturalist and published wildlife photographer. He spends his days along the parkway taking photos. He has spent the last 15 years tracking coyotes to understand about them and educate the public with his findings. His primary focus is to bring the community together and help improve our wonderful parkway.
Guy said that having coyotes near or in urban areas is here to stay and it would be best to learn to coexist with them for our mutual benefit. He mentioned (through his very nice slide show) that there are coyotes in our midtown and we need to have an understanding of them and a good management plan.
The traditional management consisted of trapping and relocating, shooting or poisoning them, but non-lethal deterrents are most effective and can be accomplished by an education, outreach and if necessary, hazing programs. One objective is to develop a common language and awareness of normal vs abnormal behavior when discussing encounters with coyotes – through the dissemination of information to residents, businesses, and schools through the neighborhood and town media.
Another objective is to cooperate with non-profit organizations like Project Coyote and local and state agencies that provide educational material programs, and expertise in dealing with coyote-human conflict resolution. I have published a “Keep Me Wild” brochure at the end of this story which Guy showed in his slide show).
Guy looks to visually sight them or traces of them in his walks around entrances from the American Parkway and even looks for “scat” from the coyotes from which he can tell where they have been eating by the looks of the discernible food. He showed data from results from the tracking of the sightings. Guysaid that coyotes eat mostly small animals like rats and squirrels, raccoons, and birds– but may kill a cat or dog, if in the area. Keep your animals safe, do not leave your pet’s food outside, take care of garbage, put away bird feeders at night and under no circumstance feed the coyotes.
If you need help with a problem, you can contact the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, North Central Region at (916) 358-2900. For more information, you can email to Guy atguy@create-roc.com
President Vicky informed Guy that, in his honor, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.
HAPPY FINES
Just as Vickywas readying us for our “Happy Thought” session, she mentioned that Foundation Chair Chuck McBride had something to say. Chuck announced that the “Change Jar” for Polio+ has been counted and there was $2,476.95 in it – a wonderful amount. He said that in keeping with his announcement in the beginning of the Rotary year, that, one person would be chosen from the Club to get the points and be able to give them to whomever that person wishes. Well it was decided that the name would be chosen from all the members names andVickyfolded each name written on a piece of paper and put them in a jar. Now get this, folks, she designated none other than her consort, Jay, to select out the winning piece of paper and guess who the winner was -VICKY BOATWRIGHT!. Very suspicious, at least they were in different rooms….
The “Happy Fines” went as follows: Karen Munsterman gave 1 Allotment ($20) for polio+, even though she didn’t win the “Change Jar”; George Abraham gave 1A to the food closet because his son just graduated from High School in a “drive by” graduation; Katha Danz gave 1A to the food back because her niece, Katie, just turned 30 ; Frank Pease gave 1A to the food closet (don’t know why). Just a short session folks – we were all emotionally drained by the specter of the amazing and unexpected development of who the big winner of the “Change Jar” was….
Oh and Chuck also announced that total polio+ giving for the Club was $5,388.00.
Also, just as Vicky was about to close the meeting, esteemed member Geronimo made the entirely reasonable request ofVicky, that she leave the bell on her front porch in order to have it picked up and properly cleaned for the next president but he was curtly rebuffed.

RAFFLE
SO (DOUBLE DITTO, DITTO, DITTO, FROM LAST WEEK) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
