Fair Oaks Blvd. Business Improvement District Plans (PBID)

PBID - GARY HURSH

Fair Oaks Blvd. Business Improvement District Plans (PBID)

Gary Hursh, president of the Carmichael Improvement District was introduced to our Club. He is a property owner and attorney with a business on Fair Oaks Blvd and has a great interest in the Fair Oaks Chamber of Commerce and a wife who was a member of the Point West Rotary Club.
Gary wanted to talk about recent improvements with just over half of the 250 business property owners with commercial assets in the 10 acre Fair Oaks Boulevard Public and Business Improvement District (PBID).
The District has been battling blight and crime on the roughly 437 properties in the area.
Stakeholders have created a nonprofit, the Carmichael Improvement District (CID) to manage the PBID budget and project oversight. Among their duties are providing security, litter management and graffiti removal, illegal dumping and abandoned shopping carts and cars.
They have hired Paladin Security to help manage the homeless problem of people interfering with businesses and trespassing on properties.
The environment of the area has improved and there has been a reduction of homeless problems and crime. The next step is improvement in economic development.
President Bauer thanked Mr. Hursh for his informative presentation and mentioned that a book, in his honor, will be presented to the Carmichael Library.
Speaker Gary Hursh, President Dick Bauer, Guests  Phyllis Baughman and Carl Daniel

Sacramento Historical City Cemetery Tour
Sacramento City Historical Cemetery Tour

It was a beautiful spring day, Sunday, April 22, 2018, at the Sacramento Historic City Cemetery located at 1000 Broadway at 10th Street and the highest point in Sacramento. We met Dr. Bob LaPierrere there, a retired dermatologist, curator of the Sacramento Medical Society Museum (on Elvas St.) and supporter of the cemetery for many years  -   we (11 Rotarians, spouses, and friends) were so lucky to have him as our docent for the day.
The cemetery is very large (44 acres) and was founded in 1849. Bob took us on a one and a half hour’s tour and we learned many interesting historical facts about the residents interned there. We saw the world class rose garden that has been kept up by the cemetery for many years and many famous people’s graves including Edwin B. Crocker, John Augustus Sutter, Jr., Mark Hopkins, 1st Mayor Hardin Bigelow and many, many others. The cemetery is divided into various sections, like the pioneer’s section, veteran’s section (with a section from the civil war), firefighter’s, and others.
It is just amazing that such a historical treasure trove exists and is so convenient to see and explore. I would recommend to anyone to take a tour or go on your own on any nice sunny day.
Afterwards most of us had a delightful dim sum lunch at the nearby restaurant, the Ming Dynasty.
Bob LaPerriere, M.D. can be contacted at ssvmsedcom@gmail.com. Some pictures are below…

Pulling Thistles at Effie Yeaw Nature Center

Kari Bauer, Carole Girard, Steve Girard, Dick Bauer, Greg Herrera, Stan Roe, Walter Malhoski, Chuck McBride
So it came to pass that the thistles (bad plants) were choking out the good plants at Effie Yeaw Nature Center such that EYNC called upon their favorite Rotary Club to pull out the weeds. Carmichael Rotary Club did accomplished these chores on April 21, 2018 when 8 volunteers responded....to the task. Kudos to them.

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of April 10, 2017, we have purchased nearly 150 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
