♦So it came to pass that the Carmichael Rotary Club had no regular meetings from December 2nd, 2019 to January 7th, 2020, however the Club members did not stay dormant – There was the Carmichael Elementary School Holiday party on December 7th (which was reported in our last newsletter), the Holiday party at Dave and Dana’s on the ominous night of Friday, the 13th, the Holiday baskets project which was accomplished in 3 days, the 16th, 17th and 18th and finally, the intrepid Bill Donnoe and a few others picked up the dictionaries for our upcoming Elementary School Dictionary project. Reports on all these activities save the December 7th project are in this newsletter- after reporting on the January 7th meeting…..
► CRAB FEED UPDATE: Dick Bauer – The sale of tickets is well under way and Vince Iosso needs you to either turn in unused tickets or money collected today since time is short before our event on February 8th.
• David Thorman, Chair of the Raffle prizes says that we are lagging behind in the number of items collected. Please try to collect items from the community and if not, cash would be appreciated. He also said that beer and wine donations are need for the “wheel barrel” prize. Please bring to the next Rotary meeting on January 15th.
• Katha Danz, co-chair of the “Dessert Auction” said that our target is 30 desserts, we have 21 desserts committed. Try to get a donation from your grocery store or bakery. Remember to tell them that we will advertise their establishments to 300 people.
• Bill Donnoe mentioned that he needs ALL information 10 days before the event for the brochure.
• Pres. Vicky announced that we nee•d volunteers to help at the Rancho Cordova Club’s crab feed on Saturday, February 29th at St. John Vianneys – a sign up sheet was passed out. We will get 10 volunteers from the Passport Club.
• Ed Bunting said that we need ads for the Crab Feed brochure – talk with people you know CPAs, Attorneys, other establishments you frequent – the Carmichael Chamber of Commerce has added out info to their newsletter.
• There will be a membership diversity workshop from 9 am to 12 noon at the Carmichael Library on February 1st, 2020. If this subject suites your interest, please volunteer to be there.
• SAD NEWS -Our wonderful member, Doug Haaland, on leave from the Club, has been in the hospital of late and was diagnosed with renal carcinoma. Jane has sent the message that they will "fight like hell”- the disease. Hold him in your thoughts and prayers… On a brighter note Walter Malhoski noted thatJack Weiglein is doing much better after his stroke and the Club sent a “get well” card to him.

President Vicky Boatwright,Dr. Greg Herrera, Dr. Thomas Greene, Ms. Kirsten Dubrey, Dr. Bill Donnoe - Vicky, Greg, and Bill gave a
$3000 check for scholarships at American River College. Given to Thomas and Kirsten from the Rotary Club of Carmichael...
We were delighted to have Dr. Thomas Greene and Ms. Kirsten Dubrey of the American River College to accept a $3000 check (see above) from our Club for Scholarships. In addition, Dr. Greene agreed to be our keynote speaker and gave us a fairly comprehensive and fascinating overview of the many activities going on at ARC. Kirsten remained in the background, accentuating points and answering question in the Q and A session.
First Greg Herrera introduced our speaker Thomas Greene. He said that he earned a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Community College Leadership from the University of Texas and took over, as American River College president in 2014. He had served at many colleges before.
His side-kick, Kirsten Dubrey is director of donation and philanthropy at A.R.C.
Dr. Greene took to the podium and amazed us with some facts about ARC. 30,000 students are enrolled every term; 8 out 10 are low income people; their average age is 26 (not all young); are diverse with only 10% academically prepared; some come to college with basic needs of homelessness and financial insecurity; the college has more than 1800 people employed part or full time.
The college offers more than 180 educational certificates.
They have a wonderful transfer program with 3000 students receiving A.A. degrees and 90% go on to U.C.Davis or other university with STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, math)!
ARC provides the learning of skill in culinary, welding, auto tech, biotech, design tech, and allied tech fields. One skill, welding can provide high paying jobs – 100K or more per year.
ARC has 25 different sports teams and Thomas recommends for the public to try attending some of their football games – they are exciting and fun! Also, they have great jazz ensembles and they have won 18 “downbeat” awards. They are building a new STEM facility, 30,000 square feet in the fall of 2020.
In the future, ARC will provide education in advanced manufacturing, apprenticeship programs, people will be able to work and learn at the same time, and many are and increasing will be learning “online” so you don’t have to be physically present for much of your learning. Dr. Greene mentioned some of the amazing work which students are doing with the new 3D printing technology. They have a new program this year where beginning students can qualify for free tuition for their 1st year…
I think we were bowled over with the tremendous things that are accomplished at American River College – at least three or four in our Club had started our educational careers at ARC and many of our kids. We are so lucky to have such an important educational institution in our community. A lively Q and A session continued after the presentation.
In gratitude, President Vicky told Dr. Greene and Ms. Dubrey that in each of their names, a book will be donated to the Carmichael library (Sacramento Public Library).
Chuckems McBride started the Happy Fines and what a response!
FirstChuckrelated that over the holidays his son had a stroke at age 53, a scary thing, but his diagnosis is good; Rich Plath put in $100 for the crab feed, and after debate in which Rich didn’t care, it was decided that he BONGED THE GONG; Mark Beil had a fantastic Christmas and gained 5lbs., he went to Hawaii just before and in spite of not feeling his feed, he used the golf club as a “third leg” and hit the ball three hundredyards! Do you believe that?;Vicky Boatwright had a wonderful Christmas with six of her family – just relaxing; Alan Gallaway actually gained a little weight over the holidays ( he needs it); Walter Malhoski celebrated his wife’s birthday (Patti ) yesterday and so RANG THE BELL, what a good husband!; Katha Danz had her two daughters with her on Christmas; George Abraham bought a new car – a Tesla – not as fancy as Hamid’s; Dick and Kari Bauer just got back from a vacation in Indonesia and Dick is so glad he had his knees surgically fixed so that he could survive the trip; Ed Bunting said something about the “Aztecs”; Bill Baxter had a great Christmas because, in spite of his having knee problems, his family took over and did a great job; Vince Iosso went to Madison, Wisconsin and brought a flag from the Rotary Club he visited there. Seemslike we are running into a boring streak where there is no money in the kitty and the only consolation is a bottle of wine. Rich Plath had the winning ticket, but drew the Jack of Hearts, but seemed happy with a bottle of red wine.
CHRISTMAS PARTY AT DAVID THORMAN AND DANANEWELL'S HOME..
In spite of the date, Friday, the 13th, there was a jovial mood at our annual Christmas/Holiday party. It was at Dave and Dana’s festive (and beautifully) decorated home. A significant majority of the Club’s members showed up with their spouses and friends. We outdid ourselves with wonderful hors d’oeuvres and light dishes that were brought to the party.
A big “Thank You” goes out to Dave and Dana for such a wonderful party. In addition they served tasty fine Irish coffees after dinner. photos below:
They say “it takes a village” to do great things, I think it is true of the Christmas/Holiday food baskets project done year after year by the Carmichael Rotary Club. Virtually every member of the Club and friends/family showed up and worked flawlessly to accomplish the project. Our esteemed member and Chair Rich Plath oversaw the sorting, filling and delivery of baskets over three days. Here is his report:
“This week, our club assembled and distributed 79 food baskets for San Juan School District families. This effort involved partnering with district social workers. In addition, the club collected three truck/suv loads of cans which were contributed to the Carmichael Presbyterian Church. We contributed $1,000 to the church as well.
I wish to thank the many who worked on this to make it a success.”
WE ARE HAVING A CRAB FEED ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH, 2020 AT THE LA SIERRA COMMUNITY CENTER IN CARMICHAEL. PLEASE CONTACT OUR CHAIRPERSON VINCE IOSSOAT 916-803-4766 OR EMAIL AT vamaio@att.net . Please Hurry, tickets are limited.....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.

Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
