Preventing and Reversing Chronic Disease

don forrester, M.D.

It was a pleasant duty, one retired Kaiser Doctor introducing another, so that our President and Doctor Dick Bauer introduced our speaker Dr. Don Forrester. He said that Dr. Forrester is a family medicine physician with 30 years of experience who worked as a Kaiser Doctor from 1978-2008. He has a wife, Beth, 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Since his retirement from Kaiser, he has been devoting himself to nutrition and is an expert in nutrition and health and the prevention and reversal of chronic diseases.
Dr. Forrester said that he has talked to many different kind of audiences, in different ways – via slideshow etc, but he has found that it is useful to ask the audience what chronic diseases interest them and speak more specifically to those diseases. He asked the audience what diseases interested them and wrote their responses down on a easel tablet:
They were colitis, asthma, spinal stenosis, weight loss, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson, medical marijuana, Type II diabetes, and heart disease.
Then he mentioned that the diseases in general can be placed in 5 categories, Metabolic, Arterial Disease, Neurological Disease, Auto-immune diseases and cancer.
Dr. Forrester mentioned that there is a difference between “normal” and “healthy”.
For instance, the disease of Type II diabetes is a sugar processing problem and the underlying problem is fats in the diet. He referenced John McDougal, famous nutritionist who heads the McDougal program in Santa Rosa.
Sugar increases the condition of pre-diabetes and saturated fat is harmful to cells. The densest caloric food is oil that has 4000 calories per pound! So meat is next and down to vegetables.
Cardiovascular disease is caused by animal foods, cholesterol and fat. A study in Sweden found that back problems were caused by plugged arteries in the middle lumbar region. With osteoarthritis, change in diet and the pains go away. Alzheimer’s may be caused by cholesterol in the blood. Some studies indicate that aluminum is to be avoided, also avoid processed cheese. Avoiding cancer may be achieved by eating plant food. There is a study from China that dioxins found in meat can be a problem. Exercise is good for you, but it accounts for about 15% of good health and nutrition is 85%.
If you want to learn more about nutritional issues, you can email Dr. Forrester at donforr@gmail.com and a good source of information on various diets is at www.nutritionfacts.org
President Bauer mentioned to Dr. Forrester that a book will be donated in his honor to the Carmichael library …..Dr. Forrester quickly recommended that it be a nutrition book and that he suggests “How Not to Die” by Michael Gregor, M.D.

Book Donations, the Gifts that Keep on Giving - update, March 7, 2017
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org

As of April 10, 2017, we have purchased nearly 150 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
