NO CRAB FEED THIS YEAR!

The Board has unanimously decided to not have the Crab Feed Fundraiser this year. One of the main reasons for their decision is the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. It takes a lot of planning, up front cost, and manpower to put on an event like this and they decided not to risk it. President Bauer asked for ideas on another type of  interim fundraiser. October 5th -we will have a full Club Assembly to brain storm on ideas for a new Fundraiser. Please bring your ideas......

POLIO+ SOCIETY: Why not join for $100 a year and get recognized with a pin at our meeting on October 26th. Mail in your flyer to Tom Cicchini.

We have an opportunity to join with others to help with Effie Yeaw's Habitat Restoration native planting
project to dig holes, install cages, mulch and plant native plants on Saturday, Nov. 6.
Vicky Boatwright sent 'round a sign-up sheet - it will be a nice, easy, and rewarding couple of hours.
Let her know if you are interested.

HANDS ON PROJECTS The Board has expressed an interest in having more "hands on" projects and Vicky has a spate of possible not too difficult projects available -like help plant a few plants at Carmichael Park, assist in the library at the Carmichael School and participate in their event. November 15-18, 8:30-200 pm.  Also,  to partner with other Clubs such as Kiwanis, Lions, and Shreiners. Our friend Sharon Ruffner is now president of the Carmichael Kiwanis Club and they have a project to assemble food packets for a couple of hours. Let Vicky know if you are interested in volunteering. It also is a great way to get potential new members involved.

Getting to Know Him - Tony Marques

Tony started by telling us that he was born in 1938 in Portugal and was for a while the only first generation immigrant in the Club. At this time, there are three others, Heine and Ramouna Roikjer, and George Abraham. He spent his first years there under the dictatorship of Antonio Salazar. As a kid he saw the British sink a German submarine of the coast and saw many war planes in the sky. He went to grammar school, it was mandatory under the dictatorship which was better than before where you didn’t have to go or couldn’t afford school.
Tony came to America with his family in 1948. He went to Antioch High School and remembered that he worked many jobs, mowing lawns, working in the tomato fields, etc. He attended the College of Pacheco which was nicknamed for Diablo Valley College. In 1960 he got a job with Wells Fargo Bank and worked there for 13 years, and then went to Western American Bank for another 13 years, and then to Crocker Bank for 13 years and then it was purchased by Wells Fargo Bank before he retired - so he ended up with his old company. After a year he went to Placer Sierra where he spent the last 6 years before retirement. In all, he spent 47 years in banking and specialized in credit administration – he was in bank branches all over Northern California – taking also College courses in Accounting from Golden Gate College.
Tony said that the banks in the early days paid for membership in service clubs (they don’t now) and paid moving expenses and other perks. When you moved from one branch to another, it was a promotion and the banks were generous with their benefits. It was a great life.
President Dick Bauer added at the end of Tony’s talk that he is married to an identical twin, Jan and they live side by side with Jan’s twin Jeanne, and Bob Paulsen. Bob was a long time active member of the Carmichael Club and still is an honorary member.

CLIMATE CHANGE & THE WINE INDUSTRY
Dr. John Troiano, third from left and his wine compatriots of the "Wrcckless Blenders" wine company.
We were very fortunate today to have a local treasure, Dr. John Troiano who is a local wine expert and will talk about the Climate Change’s effect on the wine industry. John grew up in Perth Amboy N.J. and earned his PhD in plant pathology from Rutgers University in 1977. He moved to California in 1984 with future wife Victoria to work for the Dept. of Pesticide Regulation researching pesticide residues in the ground water. Retired in 2019. He made his first California wine in 1987 and eventually joined Sacramento Home Winemaker’s and became president. He has been chief judge for the California State Home winemakers competition. He, and compatriots became a bonded winery, the Wreckless Blenders,  in 2007 -their special home business are allowed to sell 100 cases a year.
John introduced a new concept to me, Terrior (in this case)- an analysis of specific geographical, climate and cultural conditions in grape growing regions. He produced a graph showing the increase in temperature over the last 100+ years (below). One would expect temperature to fluctuate between hot and less hot years, but no, it has been on a constant increase, especially in the last 40-50 years. His 17 slides are self-explanatory such that I have chosen to just reproduce some of them for accuracy and clarity.
There was a lively Q &A after John's presentation which showed the great interest we have with our wines. It seems that Climate Change will produce a great challenge to the wine industry and adaption will be necessary to continue to produce the great wines which we enjoy. There may be some actual benefits in some regions like Germany as temperature's rise. President Dick presented a book about Carmichael to John and told him that in honor of his lecture, a book (perhaps on wine) will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary to the Sacramento Public Library).

HAPPY THOUGHTS

It was a happy day for Geronimo because his wife Sarah came through successfully both back and knee surgery, so to celebrate, he BONGED THE GONG!; Jay Boatwright was happy because his alma mater, Oregon State beat USC, a great accomplishment, 45-27, so he RANG THE BELL; Dick Bauer was happy because he had a great bottle of Sangiovese wine, and Heine and Ramouna were happy to give us the pleasure of having their 15 year old daughter, Karla, at the meeting; Walter Malhoski put in his meal money, $20 to celebrate also.

DRAWING

The drawing started out normally, but all of a sudden Mark Beil got the winning ticket and drew Ace of Spades. The bad news is that he didn't get any wine, the good news is that he won the $350+ in the pot. Look at his satisfied smile!

Donations as of 9-14-2021
During the incumbency of President David Thorman(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 1-5-2021 (PASSING 300), I have noted only the last 20 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
