NOVEMBER
FOUNDATION MONTH

President  David Thorman opened the 17th "virtual meeting" of the 2020-2021 Rotary Year on the 10th of November.  As is his custom, he brought his "Big Bell" with him and rang it loudly (and virtually) to officially start the meeting.

The "pledge" was performed by our esteemed Karen Munsterman, who enunciated the following "Thought for the Day":

ABILITY is what you are capable of doing.
MOTIVATION determines what you do
ATTITUDE determines how well you do it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

HOLIDAY BASKETS Rich Plath reported that the Holiday food baskets for the needy will be going on this year. We will serve about 75 families. The schools will take care of the delivery of the baskets.

EFFIE YEAW PROJECT -  Habitat Restoration will occur on this Saturday, November 14 at 9:00 am and about 16 people have signed up to help- so says Dick Bauer. He has contacted each person about the event. If any others wish to volunteer, please let Dick know. Be sure to arrive a little before 9:00 a.m. so you can be guided to the site together. Also be sure to bring your masks and your signed liability waiver form. Also I believe Geronimo will be there with Rotary inscribed masks to give out to members.

FUTURE FUND RAISERS: With the advent of COVID, and perhaps that we will not be able to have a Crab Feed, we need some other way to create funds for our projects. Troy Drennon heads up a committee to find possible other fundraisers. He would like 3 ideas from each member.

POLIO+ REPORT: Chuck McBride reported that for the month of October, the District Clubs gave an amount of an astonishing $368,886 to polio+ (with the doubling by the District and doubling again by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) - Wow! The power of Rotary.

Troy Drennon introduced our speaker:

Marcos Breton is a leading news journalist who has been with the Sac Bee for over 30 years. He is a graduate of the San Jose State School of Journalism. He is a native Californian, has written two books on baseball and is a voter for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. He lives in the Sacramento area with his wife and two daughters.
Marcos said that he really appreciated being invited to speak to our Rotary Club. He has, over the years, spoken to us a couple of times before. Marcos said that he changed from serious political news to sports in the early 2000s. After ten consecutive years he became a baseball hall of fame voter.  In 2013 he got to consider the candidacy of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. They were shelved off because of the accusation of using performance enhancing drugs. Now they are in their 9th year of eligibility (restricted to 10 years). This year Marcos will get to vote on them again. Last year Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees became the first candidate that was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame unanimously on the first try after becoming eligible. All the others, including Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio did not get into the Hall of Fame unanimously on their first year of eligibility, because there was always some detractors in the voting pool – not even with Willie Mays.
Marcos has suffered with the Sacramento Kings. They had new owners in 2013 and are still not doing well. They have had 14 losing seasons. He remembers when they almost took the Western Championship in 2002. The Golden One Center was a huge thing for downtown – until COVID. The Kings let go of Grant Napier and Marcos wishes they had not done that because there should be room for forgiveness and understanding.
Marcos said that he has been working from home since march because of COVID and since that time McClatchy has sold off the newspaper (to Chatham) and they are moving from 2100 Q St., vacating offices they have operated since 1953.

Q and A:

In the lively question and answer period many topics were discussed. The problem the 49ers have had this year with injuries – losing skill players, pass rush, depth in their offensive line. Probably because of not enough time this year to prepare players due to COVID.

The Kings have had their troubles and Marcos thinks Buddy Held may be traded. What the Kings need is “rim protectors”. Luke Walton will probably continue as coach this season. Marcos also talked about growing up in San Jose and becoming enamored with the Giants, listening to games on the radio in bed at night. Sports have been a wonderful life-long passion. Marcos mentioned that Jerry Seinfeld said that when he retires, he will just go to baseball games and drink beer. Marcos says he will do the same.

It was great to kick around the subject of sports with a real professional journalist. What a pleasure! President David enjoyed telling Marcos that, in honor of his visit, a book will be donated to the Carmichael Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

HAPPY FINES

President David Thorman started the drama of the "Happy Thoughts" session. Geronimo stepped up to become a BONG GONGER for our wonderful speaker of the day, Marcos Breton; Stan Roe put in 1A and announced that tomorrow, he will be going under the knife for shoulder surgery; Walter Malhoski donated $51 because it has been 51 years since he was a marine; Chuck McBride RANG THE BELL for the Club in celebration of the 3rd week since Maureen's hip surgery and she is doing much better; Jay Sedlak RANG THE BELL for his birthday (he didn't mention a number); Mark Beil GONGED THE BONG in celebration of his mother's life who passed away on Tuesday (go to the R.I. Foundation); Vinne Iosso put in $51 for the passing of a friend who was a Veteran; Ed Bunting BONGED THE GONG because he acquired a granddaughter last month and another this month and his grandson turned 2 and his German Shepherd turned 11; so at last Walter added $49 to make it a RING THE BELL for the Club and Ed added $49 for Vinne to make him a BELL RINGER. The computation of the above goings on are beyond my math capabilities!

Donations as of 10-15-2020
During the incumbency of  President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen by Berta Boegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library
rboegel@saclibrary.org
Due to the quantity of books donated as of 10-16-2020 (over 200), I have noted only the last 16 or so. The prior tabulations of books donated have been archived and will be in the memory of the Carmichael Club in Club Runner.
