► April 7 - Public Health in Sacramento County - Dr. Steve Orkland - Virtual Meeting online - 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. President Vicky willemail you of exact details...
It was a pleasant surprise for President Vicky Boatwright that so many of the members used the "Zoom" software to get online for our joint "Virtual" meeting. We had 21 members attend and many of their photos are above. In addition, we had Assistant Governor Desiree Wilson and District Governor Ray Ward. Since this was our first online meeting and it was slated to be a "social", we just talked to each other and got re-acquainted after our long three weeks of isolation. We showed off our dogs and cats and even got to see "Sparky" again. President Vicky was so happy to see that we were all in good health. She went through the sad announcements that almost all of our activities have been postponed or cancelled. However we will continue our weekly meetings from afar and next meeting will be appropriately on the topic of public health and will happen, she thinks, from 6:15 to around 7:30 p.m. She will let us know. We all were happy to see our friend and esteemed member Shyama Chakroborty after a long absence. Some useful announcements from our members are as follows.
Walter Malhoski; My nurse daughter Sonja is a BS RN on the front lines at Rideout hospital in Yuba City. As part of their caring for Covid19 patients, they are required to have many garment ( PPE) and equipment changes daily.
Attached is the flyer from the hospital expressing their need for supplies. (click on Read More bottom of page)
Sonja has specifically requested from me, and my friends, if we knew of sources for eye protection, like goggles or glasses. ( I feel you have a soft heart for eye protection). With the wide range of Rotarian knowledge and contacts, perhaps one source could be school system laboratories that have unused glasses.( Classes are canceled.) Construction companies are another source.
Along those lines, I personally and another Rotarian, who has a nurse daughter ,will purchase some from Amazon or other suppliers to help.
We ask Rotarians to inquire their contacts to enable the supply that aid these important healthcare providers.
Thank you for you compassion, and concern.
Hamid Ahmadi enlightened us about a very needed emergency program right now, with so many small business who are out of business - the Paycheck Protection Program....
After filling out the Paycheck Protection Program form, you can apply for these federally backed loans at the more than 1,800 banks. However, the number of lenders offering loans through the Paycheck Protection Program will end up being greater and includes many more traditional banks, credit unions. The first step you should take is contacting their current bank.
Below is the link to the banks that work with Small Business Administration loans. Get this information out to everyone.
Shyama Chakroborty has been in contact with a high school in Bangladesh in which they were given a computer lab and set up smart rooms. Shyama would like to connect this high school with a sister school in the U.S. where they can share knowledge. He would like to make it a Rotary project involving our Club.
Troy Drennon, announced that there is a new CARES Act which lists economic relief statutes
Highlights of the CARES Act
The CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act was signed by President Trump to help provide financial stability and relief for individuals and businesses affected by COVID-19. While the bill is very broad and addresses a number of areas and industries, and many of the specific details will still need to be analyzed, we believe the following are important to highlight for individuals and their families. Click on Read more below for more information.
Happy Fines, Because of getting used to the “Virtual” format, President Vicky took over the duty of collecting donations. There were many and are as follows: Troy Drennon said the upside of our crisis is staying home with kids and for the cool (Virtual) meeting – donation $25; Jay Boatwright – ditto about the meeting; Vinne Iosso RANG THE BELL because he is now officially RETIRED, today was his last day; Frank Pease gave $25 in honor of his daughter who is a nurse at Kaiser (neonatal); Phil Danz RANG THE BELL because his birthday is in April (April 20th) and we are almost in April; Stan Roe is happy that we have Vicky as our first (and best) pandemic president ($25); George Abraham is just grateful ($25); Frank Pease spoke up again and noted that list of corona virus deaths etc is shown on the Weather channel; Walter Malhoski noted that he was sitting next to Geronimo (Greg Herrera’s online name) and his 14th anniversary of retiring and talked about the protective goggles that his nurse daughter said that there is need of for protection for employees from COVID-19 at her place of work; Karen Munsterman gave $25 to congratulate Vince in his retirement and said that she walks the golf course where she lives; Vicky Boatwright RANG THE BELL because she is so happy that our members are well. Mmmm – 3 Bell Ringers and lots of $25 donations.

During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
