You can all be extremely pleased at the recognition that our club received at last night's District 5180 Conference.
We were awarded Two Platinum Awards (for "Public Image" and "Service Projects"), Three Gold Awards (for "Administration," "Foundation," and "Membership"), and a Silver Award (for "Youth Services").
These awards were decided upon not so much by "points," but the district administration recognizing collaborative efforts by the club in multiple areas of concern. The district wanted to go beyond numbers and look at a more complicated blend of factors that goes into a club's activities.
Congratulations to all of you.
We all know that we are a great club with a special energy and sincerity about us. We also get things done with care and concern for our community and the world.
Truly Carmichael Rotary is "Good for Carmichael and Good for the World."
Now in addition to our personal satisfaction for what we do, we have a few awards to show for it.
MsBlum is a young urban farmer involved with local urban farming in the Sacramento area. Specifically, the Cannery Urban Farm located in Davis. It comprises 3 acres and is called a Agrihood (agricultural neighborhood) of which there are 150 in the U.S. Farming sites can be leased from the city and farmed for 4 to 5 years – giving the young farmer an education in farming which will carry on to a career in farming. Liz went on to talk about the need for getting young people interested in farming careers. Farmers are getting older and there are fewer of them. If this continues it could threaten our food supply. Land based learning comprises Youth programs as well as Adult programs and the California Farm Academy which has a 7 month training program.
They also have food stands which provide fresh foods to the public and you can purchase “Veggie Boxes” and pick up fresh vegetables at various places around Sacramento. See below:
Our acting President Dick Bauer complimented Liz on her work and her informative presentation. He also informed her that, in her honor, a book will be given to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Library System) and the book will probably be on an agricultural topic. Pic below:

Vicky Boatwright "Happy Thoughts" guru and soon to be President of the Club asked kindly for some input of $ for our under funded Club activities and so Bill Donnoe gave some because he has missed a meeting and in memory of a dog that he has just lost;-sad!; Jay Boatwright is happy to be done with the District's planning of their conference, it comprised lots of time and effort; Vicky seconded the sentiment; Stan Roe talked about the "good feeling" that he got while packing food on Friday, the day before the conference, in the "Rise Against Hunger" project; Vicky concurred; I believe that Jay Sedlak said something about the turn out of the Casa Roble Foothall Club; Dick Bauer had a good time at the District Conference and wanted to thank Greg Herrera, Vicky and Jay Boatwright and was ecstatic about all the great awards we earned; Mark Beil mentioned that the Club is a little short on fines to meet budget: Vinne Iosso has a granddaughter who is turning 14;Alan Gallaway had called Doug Haalandan old fart in his remarks and jokes today and so I think Doug said that he would "pray for him" and put in some $$;

He did NOT get a bottle of wine from the Club's secret cellars, because yourstingy Club's Board voted to nix the bottle of wine prize!

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are some of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

SPEAKERS/BOOK DONATIONS TO THE CARMICHAEL LIBRARY
As of June 26, 2017, we have purchased nearly 160 titles in honor of our speakers! Because of the large number of books, we are not showing them all at this time.
