We had our TWELFTH “virtual” meeting of the Carmichael Rotary Club, June 16, 2020. President Vicky Boatwright, recognized esteemed member Chuck McBride who, after performing the "Pledge", gave the very germane Thought for the Day" as follows:
HONORARY
RICH DESMOND, MARK CULLUM, DESIREE WILSON
Desiree Wilson, came to our today's "virtual meeting" on June 16th, after a not so good bout with spinal meningitis and being in the hospital (she is fine now). She wanted to express to us that because this was her last meeting as our assistant governor, she wanted to thank us for all the good times and warm welcoming affection she felt from our Club throughout the year. Desiree expressed that she was in awe of all the great things we do for Rotary. President Vicky expressed that we feel the same way about her, and we will miss her.... Desiree said she will be attending our meetings from time to time she just won't be able to stay away!
Jay Sedlak has had hernia surgery -reports are that he is doing well - get well real soon..
♦ Blood is badly needed:You can go toVitalent.orgto find a location to give blood. President Vicky has been there recently and it is done spaced out and in very comfortable surroundings. One location close to us is BloodSource, 11713 Fair Oaks Blvd (916) 722-7119. D.G. Ray Ward said recently that after a bit, Vitalent might want the blood (serum) of those who have been infected with the COVID-19 virus, to help others. Right now they very much need "O" type. Please mention Carmichael Rotary if you give....
♦ Invite your friends and family, and even past members you still have contact with, to our Zoom meetings - It's easy and they might enjoy it!
► JUNE 23: UGANDAN WATER PROJECT - EGASA SAMSON - 7:45 - 9:00 PM.
►JUNE 30: DEMOTION OF PRESIDENT VICKY BOATWIGHT
Rich Desmond is a 5th generation Sacramento County Resident. He was born, raised and currently lives in Carmichael with his wife, Lisa, and their five children, ages 11-20. He is a graduate of Jesuit High School in 1988 and Santa Clara University on 1992 with a B.A. degree in English. While working for the CHP, he went to the McGeorge School of Law, graduating in May of 2000 and passing the bar exam in July of that year.
He has had a successful career with the California Highway Patrol, from 1995 to 2019, ending as CHP Chief. He has many accomplishments during his career - too many to put in this bulletin. (Go to http://www.richdesmond.com ) for more detailed information. Rich and his family love to spend time on the American River Parkway, at Effie Yeaw Nature Center and local Parks. He coached his kids in Youth Soccer and Little League, but mostly participates in sports now as a spectator.
Rich said he lives here in Carmichael and loves this community. He said that this community is a diverse community spreading from Campus Commons to the Foothill area, 95% of it is urban and unincorporated. Over time, Rich has seen a decline in the commercial corridors in the area, and the homeless problem is getting worse and worse, along with traffic and roads. With Susan Peters retiring, he decided to try to take her place. Rich said that the COVID-19 will be his number one priority - to keep people safe while balancing with economic success. The County's people have different needs, it's important to make sure there is good communication and pare that right people with the right leadership jobs.
Homelessness is a problem, now with the pandemic 400 people have been placed in temporary housing. A priority for the homeless is finding places to sleep. We need to identify ways for people to get treatment, the answer is not just more housing projects, there is a need to attract more investment. Sacramento County has been mired in a hopeless bureaucracy - we need cultural change to make the County more business friendly.
Our roadways are bad, we need improved infrastructure, it is hard to find the money to fix these problems, it may be best to find where there is waste in spending and apply that to roads etc.
Rich said a final issue is to address our current social unrest. It is hard to hear from some folks that they believe all law enforcement officers are bad. We need to find ways to be better and improve relations.
Rich is an independent and as such has no party affiliation. He takes nothing from political parties. He is endorsed by John McGuinnes, and many, many others. Rich said that he has a life long connection with the Carmichael community and an abundant amount of leadership experience.
Rich Desmond's mailing address is: 5150 Fair Oaks Blvd #101-293, Carmichael, CA 95608 and his campaign office is 6535 Fair Oaks Blvd, Carmichael, CA 96608 and of course his website is http://www.richdesmond.com
President Vicky delighted Rich by informing him that, in honor of his visit, an inscribed book will be donated to the Carmichael Public Library (subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library)
In keeping with Carmichael Rotary policy of non-endorsement of political candidates,
all candidates are invited to come to our Rotary meeting and will be given equal time..

RAFFLE
SO DOUBLE, DOUBLE DITTO, DITTO, DITTO, FOR 12 WEEKS) there was no Raffle because we need a genius to figure out how we can do the Raffle on an online (Virtual) format. There isn't much money in the kitty anyway. It would be good to get a "virtual" bottle of wine. It might take some time folks....
During the incumbency of President David Thorman,(2013-14) it was decided that instead of giving a particular gift, ie coffee mug, pen etc. to honor our guest speaker each week, we would simply donate a book to the Carmichael Library. So below are many of the books that we have donated in honor of recent speakers.
It is the "gift that keeps of giving" because those who will check out these books from the library will derive many hours of pleasure for years to come, and it enhances learning and literacy. The books are chosen byBertaBoegel, Branch Supervisor, Carmichael Library, subsidiary of the Sacramento Public Library.

Yourbulletin editor just couldn’t help bringing to your notice the relevance of the last six “Book Donations” by Branch Supervisor, Berta Boegel given “in honor of” our recent keynote speakers to the Carmichael Library (Sacramento Public Library) at our Club meetings. Note that Berta has fined tuned the speakers topic to the subject of the book! They are below:
Missy McCall, who talked about “Human Trafficking”, book donated in her name: Under theBirch Tree: A Memoir of Discovering Connections and Finding a Home by Nancy Chadwick.
Mark Urban, who talked about a trip to Ethiopia, book donated in his name: The Pharaoh’sTreasure: The Origin of Paper and the Rise of Western Civilization by John Gaudet.
Dr. Beverly Wesner-Hoen, who talked about being a part of Rotary Fellowship, book donated Why To Kill a Mockingbird Matters: What Harper Lee’s Book and Iconic American Film Mean to Us Today by Tom Santopietro
Doug Haaland, who talked about his trip to Israel, book donated in his name: Shaya: An Odysseyof Food, My Journey Back to Israel by Alon Shaya.
and 6. Bill Baxter and Rich Plath, who talked about “Fly Fishing” – get this – “On the Fly”: HoboLiterature and Songs 1879-1941 ed. By Iain Mcintyre. How appropriate….
